Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
INFINITY GAUNTLET #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – In the farthest reaches of Battleworld, a war of gems is about to be waged anew. In one corner, the Mad Titan Thanos, wielding a few too many Infinity Stones for anyone’s liking; in the other corner? A Nova-empowered centurion looking to protect the family she abandoned years before. Which force will prove more powerful? How will the new universe be reshaped by the conflict? And, most importantly, how will it affect the world that comes after Secret Wars? Read this comic to find out, True Believer! (Kris Johnson)
BATGIRL #41 $2.99 (DC Comics) – I said it a few weeks back and I’ll say it again: Batgirl is the best damn book that DC’s putting out these days. The first 6 issues were an amazing romp with action, detective know-how and pretty awesome artwork. Well now it’s time to get Burnside’s favourite hero back into the swing of things by having her come face to face with the BatBunny….sorry, I mean the new Batman. It’s an honest mistake. The suit looks like a Bunny, no? This will bring a new level to family feuding, I’m sure. (Andrew)
FIGHT CLUB 2 #2 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – This comic is better than it has any right to be. If you’re a Fight Club fan and you’re not reading this comic, just what the hell are you doing with your life? (Kris Johnson)
KAPTARA #3 $3.50 (Image) – If you’ve read the first two issues of this new series, you were probably left with the thought, “What the fuck is going on here? This is crazy! I HAVE to keep reading this.” So far we’ve seen some pretty freaky stuff that was equally hilarious. How can Chip Zdarsky and Kagan McLeod top what’s come so far? How ’bout adding in a famed, senual wizard that lives in the Unchanted Forrest? The heroes must face the dreaded MELVON! Freakiness upgrade acheived! (Andrew)
SECRET SIX TP VOL 02 $19.99 (DC Comcs) – My favourite run of Secret Six stories in a shiny new trade, pumped and primed for your reading pleasure. Covering issues 1-14 of the pre-New 52 Secret Six ongoing series, (re-)discover what a rabid cult following have known for a very long-time: Gail Simone, Nicola Scott and Cliff Chiang created a masterpiece of character and graphic storytelling and ya’ll are late to the party. (Kris Johnson)
HOWARD THE DUCK #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – Gotta love these Tie-In books, right? Not following Marvel’s current Secret Wars title? Never fear ’cause this has nothing to do with it. No, instead this book ties into the 1984 series, Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars. That’s right, this duck run amok in a world he didn’t create is running back to a time when comics were made to sell action figures (unlike now when they’re made to sell movies and television shows). Dr. Strange is also involved…..so there you go. (Andrew)
DONALD DUCK #2 $3.99 (IDW) – It looks like Ducks are popular this week at the comic shop and here in the land of Geek Hard comic picks. That’s with good reason, yo! While Howard satisfies older readers’ more adult sensibilities, good ol’ Donald is here to bring the fun for fans of all stripes. The first issue of IDW’s series was rock solid entertainment and this second installment should have no troubles serving up another dollop of duck-infused all-ages excellence. (Kris Johnson)
FADE OUT #7 $3.50 (Image) – If you are not reading The Fade Out, I truly feel sorry for you because you are missing out on one of the best told stories in comics right now. The world of this hollywood noir murder mystery keeps turning and Charlie’s deep in it now. He’s fallin’ for a girl – the actress that took the place of the last girl he fell for – but is he truly fallin’ or is he working her for information? Or is she working him for her own reasons? Or are they both working eachother for the reasons I just said? All I know is somebody’s working somebody over something in this here hard boiled tale of treachery and regret. It’s good readin’, it is. (Andrew)
SPREAD #8 $3.50 (Image) – No and his band of misfits attempt to guide a group of children to a fabled land free from the Spread. Only problem? To get there they’ve gotta wade right through the heart of darkness. If you haven’t been reading this awesome sci-fi/horror comic, this issue should serve as an excellent jumping on point and if you have been reading. Tell your friends, yeah? Something this cool shouldn’t be a secret. (Kris Johnson)
ODD SCHNOZZ & THE ODD SQUAD GN $19.99 (Oni) – Don’t let the title fool you. This is a perfectly normal comic book that involves a punk band, a talking chimp scientist, a secret organization, cyborg animals and a small suburban town that was once the suicide capital of the country. Nothing to see here. Move along……unless you’re looking for awesome! Then it’s the perfect place to stop and gawk at the fun and crazy adventure that awaits you. Check it out! (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
