Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
SPIDER-MAN #8 $3.99 (Marvel) – Miles Morales is a wanted man as a result of the events of Civil War II! Can pals Nova and Ms Marvel help the web-slinger escape his latest predicament while keeping his sweet black and red Spidey jammies in one piece? Maybe so, but not before a substantial amount of the awesome sauce is spread liberally amongst this comic’s 20 pages! (Kris Johnson)
FAITH #3 $3.99 (Valiant) – It was bound to happen. The Valiant superhero who also happens to be the world’s biggest fangirl is going to California’s biggest comic convention. But just as she goes to find the latest anime and comics, trouble will find her! That trouble is a bastard, isn’t he? Now Faith’s gotta save the day and the con all while protecting her secret identity. I’m sure that #FaithCon2016 will be one to remember! (Andrew)
OLD MAN LOGAN #11 $3.99 (Marvel) – The best Wolverine comic in years. Old Man Logan teams up with his nemesis, Lady Deathstrike, to take on the Silent Order while peeling back more layers of the horror that was The Wasteland. If you’re a fan of the character and not buying this series, I suggest you re-evaluate other decisions you’ve made in your life because you’re getting it all wrong. Ask your mom, she’ll tell ya. (Kris Johnson)
LADY KILLER 2 #2 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Two heads are better than one. That saying applies to a lot of things, including when it comes to the world of contract killing. It’s just easier when there’s a second pair of hands to help out with the dirty work. At least Josie thinks so. Unfortunately, the local hit squad disagrees with her new choice of partner. So what happens now? Do they file a grievance? Is there a tribunal? What are the proper channels for hit-person disagreements? Find out in the second issue of the second series of Lady Killer. (Andrew)
ALL STAR BATMAN #2 $4.99 (DC Comics) – After an awesome debut issue unlike anything Scott Snyder has written for the Bat up to this point, there should be little question in your mind that issue 2 is a Day One purchase. Bruce’s plan to finally cure his old pal Harv is out of the bag and while the unlikely duo continue their Tarantino-flavoured cross-country trek to achieve a nigh-impossible task, they are beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Can the caped crusader survive and accomplish the improbable by bringing back the white knight Harvey Dent? Tune in this week to find out! Same Bat-Time, same Bat-Comic! (Kris Johnson)
ROCKET RACCOON AND GROOT #9 $3.99 (Marvel) – There’s a number of reasons why you should pick up this book: 1) Rocket. 2) Groot. 3)The Civil War II Tie-in Books are better than the actual series. 3) Gwenpool. 4) The freakin’ awesome artwork by Michael Walsh (that guy can draw!). 5) Groot. 6) Groot. And, finally, 7) Groot. I think I make a pretty strong argument, don’t you think? (Andrew)
HADRIAN’S WALL #1 (OF 8) $3.99 (Image) – A murder mystery… IN SPACE! An astronaut on the space station known as Hadrian’s Wall got himself iced and it’s up to pill-head P.I. Simon Moore to suss out just whodunit. Was it his ex-wife? A giant space gorilla that I just made up and isn’t in the story? Or one of the other potentially shady crew members? Wherever the chips fall, Moore better figure it out quick because in space people don’t just slice your nose for being nosey. They shove you out a goddamn airlock. (Kris Johnson)
PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL BY CARL POTTS AND JIM LEE TP $39.99 (Marvel) – When I think back to my youth in comicdom, I am reminded of some great titles. I’m also reminded of some awful shite as well, but let’s not dwell on that. One book that has always had a special place in my heart is Punisher War Journal. Back in the late 80s/early 90s, the guy with the skull on his chest was everywhere! He was so popular, they gave him a second book! This trade collects the first 19 issues of War Journal and shows off his ties to the Marvel Universe. He butts heads with Daredevil. He teams up with Spidey. Most memorable of all is when he first locks horns with Wolverine. All this, plus Africa’s version of the Loch Ness Monster? You have to buy it now after hearing that, right? (Andrew)
MOONSHOT VOL 01 : INDIGENOUS COMICS COLLECTION $17.99 (AH Comics) – This collection from the fine folks at AH Comics contains 13 phenomenal short tales spanning the vast spectrum of indigenous storytelling. I had the pleasure of supporting this project during the original Kickstarter campaign and having read it many times over, can promise a tremendously satisfying and unique experience unlike anything else being released this week and possibly this year. Now that’s its getting a wide release to the general public I’ve just got one thing to say: Get it. (Kris Johnson)
THE FIX #5 $3.99 (Image) – One of the best damn series on the shelves this year has been The Fix by Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber. Two cops that are as crooked as they are hilarious. A new story arc begins and Roy gets to meet the mayor. That’s all you need to hear to know that things are bound to get fucked up and Roy will look like a douche sooner or later. He always does, amirite? If you’re looking for something that’s funny, that pushes the boundaries of good taste and has some pretty kick-ass art, then do yourself a favour and pick up this book. You’d have to be stupid not to. It’s a goddamn home run! What’re you waiting for? Get to your local comic shop right NOW! (By the way, when it comes to The Fix, I don’t get Hyped. I stay Hyped!) (Andrew)
