Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
ALL STAR BATMAN #4 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Batman is stuck on Two-Face’s riverboat casino and, perhaps somewhat aptly, there’s just a couple problems with that beyond the obvious: 1) It’s full to the frothy brim with the most deadly assassins this side of the Mississip’! 2) The damn thing is heading straight for a plunge over Niagara Falls! Will the Caped Crusader escape certain death?!! OR Will the Dark Knight Detective drink deeply of his own demise?! Find out this week! Same All-Star Bat-Time, Same All-Star Bat-Comic! (Kris Johnson)
VIOLENT LOVE #1 $3.99 (Image) – Like the title says, it’s a book with a little violence and a little love. A winning combination when you’re looking at two notorious bank robbers who have a big time romance between (and during) jobs. It’s pulpy, it’s fun and it’s got pretty pictures to boot. If you like crime comics, you’ll want to check this one out. (Andrew)
WWE THEN NOW FOREVER #1 $3.99 (Boom) – It is a fairly well-defined rule when it comes to comic books that anything to do with the WWE will always suck. Then. Now. Forever. That said, this comic has something very special going for it and that, my friends, is consistently kick-ass writer Dennis Hopeless. Dancing between the raindrops of major WWE events, Hopeless aims to tell the stories that take place around the big matches and big characters. First stop: The fall of The Shield. The preview pages look like a lot of fun, so, for the first time ever, wrestling fans may actually want to pay attention to a WWE produced comic. 2016 has been a weird year. (Kris Johnson)
INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – There’s a new armoured hero in town and Ironheart is her name…..actually, her name’s Riri Williams and she’s a super genius who #DIY-ed her own goddamn Iron Man suit and is now ready to take up the mantle…..or is she? It’s a lot to process. But now that’s Tony Stark is gone, it’s time to step up. Good luck, kid. You’re gonna need it. (Andrew)
CAPTAIN AMERICA: STEVE ROGERS #7 $3.99 (Marvel) – Now that Civil War II is finally over, this book can get back to the business of being awesome. What does that mean for the title? Oh, just the beginning of the new HAIL HYDRA arc in which the Red Skull begins to make his move in earnest and SHIELD starts to fucking implode. No big. (Kris Johnson)
AT THE SHORE GN $19.99 (Alternative) – There’s nothing more fun than going down to the shore and meddling with the undead, science and sea monsters. The perfect way to ruin a trip to the beach, I’d say. But what do I know. If these kids didn’t do what they’re doing to disrupt things, we wouldn’t have a damn comic to read, now would we? Check out this graphic novel and see what a little fuckin’ with things can lead to. (Andrew)
NAMESAKE #1 $3.99 (Boom) – For seven days once every seven years, our Earthly dimension overlaps with that of Ektae, a world driven by alchemical forces. During a time of such convergence, many years ago, a boy named Jordan was born of the two worlds but found a home in neither. Now a man, Jordan has two iron urns containing his dead father’s ashes thrust into his possession for an unclear purpose. Probably to like store on the mantle or something. Sometimes you just can’t read too deeply into these kinds of things. (Kris Johnson)
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #10 $3.99 (Marvel) – Alright, so as Kris mentioned earlier, Civil War II is over. Now all that’s left is picking up the pieces. That’s what Luke Cage and Danny Rand are trying to do when all of sudden, a turf war breaks out in Harlem. Tombstone, Mr. Fish, Black Cat – they all want a piece of the action and they don’t give a shit who ends up caught in the crossfire. It’s up to the Heroes for Hire to do some hero-ing to make sure that folks are safe and that these dudes don’t wreck too much shit…..otherwise they’ll have to pick up the pieces all over again. (Andrew)
CLONE CONSPIRACY #2 (OF 5) $3.99 (Marvel) – This comic is surprisingly a lot of fun. While much credit must go to writer Dan Slott, the absolutely astoundingly beautfiul art of Jim Cheung is what has truly captured my attention. This week, we get to witness that master of the craft render a classic conflict for a new era as SPIDER-MAN squares off with the newly resurrected DOCTOR OCTOPUS! Place your bets, folks! My money’s on the guy who doesn’t eat 18 cheeseburgers for breakfast. (Kris Johnson)
KLAUS HC – $34.99 (Boom) – This ain’t your daddy’s Santa Claus. This is a Year One story for a new generation where the jolly fat man is replaced by one bad-assed motherfucker! From the mind of Grant Morrison (with art by Dan Mora) comes the story of Klaus: a tale drawing from Santa’s Viking and Siberian roots. He’s still a gift giver but he also don’t take no shit from those that try to stop him from his acts of kindness. The full miniseries is now collected in one handy, dandy hardcover available just in time for the holidays. Fancy that. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
