Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
DOCTOR STRANGE #14 $3.99 (Marvel) – The crazy journey through Doctor Strange’s rogues gallery continues this week as Satanna and Master Pandemonium drag the Sorcerer Supreme through a hell built just for him. What madness have Chris Bachalo and Jason Aaron concocted for the latest instalment of the fantastically weird and wonderful series? Well, there’s a dude with tiny demons for hands running around so I think it’s safe to say it’ll be kooky as shit, whatever it is, and may just involve unending tickles. The horror. (Kris Johnson)
KILL OR BE KILLED #4 $3.99 (Image) – Every time Brubaker and Phillips put out a new series, I find myself saying it’s the “BEST THING THEY’VE EVER DONE”. Here I am once again, thinking just that. We get the end of the first act with this installment and it looks like Dylan’s extracurricular activities (you know, the whole “killing bastards that deserve it” situation) will collide with his home life (you know, the whole “sleeping with my roommate’s girlfriend” situation). Things are about to pick up so you should pick up this book and see why it’s one of the best comics of the year! (Andrew)
THANOS #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Thanos is back and he’s after the Phoenix Force! Having lusted after the Infinity Gems for so long and been within reach of his ultimate goal so many times only to falter in the last moments, the big purple bastard from beyond the stars has decided to pivot and hitch a ride on the wave of another immeasurable cosmic power. “But, wait?!” You might say. “Doesn’t the Phoenix Force only bond with mutants?” To that I remind you that Thanos is a mutant of the planet Titan, yo! Booyah! (Kris Johnson)
GI JOE REVOLUTION #1 $3.99 (IDW) – The Revolution will be illustrated. You know when Hasbro properties are making a ruckus, there’s only one highly trained special mission force to call: G.I. Joe! That’s right, the Joe team lead by Scarlett that we all though IDW had given up on is back and they’re not only fighting for freedom but also trying to figure out if they’ve been compromised. Somebody may have infiltrated the Joe organization and it’s up to Red and friends (Roadblock, Wild Bill, Shipwreak, Rock N Roll and Quick Kick) to root out the mole. Buying this issue is half the battle. YO JOE! (Andrew)
MOONSHINE #2 $2.99 (Image) – The legendary Brian Azzarello and the titantic Eduardo Risso continue their tale of mobsters vs. werewolves in the middle of Appalachia. Now, you might think to yourself that the werewolves have got this one, but I’m thinking those mobsters have probably got themselves an ass-load of silver bullets somewhere. Not because they were EXPECTING werewolves or anything, but just because they’re fancy like that. (Kris Johnson)
JESSICA JONES #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – Jessica’s on a case that might reveal not only what’s going in her life but also the entire Marvel Now Universe! We’re talking answers to some pretty big questions. Dangerous questions. Oh, and there’s that whole thing where Jess has taken her baby and done something with her that Luke Cage don’t know about. He’s pretty pissed about that and he’s aiming to show Jessica just how pissed in this issue. I’m not sure but I do think things are going to get Skrully at some point. That’s my guess. (Andrew)
ETHER #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Boone Dias, super-scientist and inter-dimensional explorer, has discovered the key to entering The Ether, a realm of fantasy and magic. Just what is a man of science and reason to do in a world of the unexplainable? Why, try to explain the living balls out of it, of course! (Kris Johnson)
SLAM #1 $3.99 (Boom) – SLAM, BAM, Thank you Boom! Thanks for bringing us a comic about roller derby. I didn’t know what I was missing in my life until this comic was announced. Knockout and Ithinka Can have been best buds since they first laced up their skates for Roller Derby Orientation. But now that they’ve been drafted to different teams, will they still remain friends or will the spirit of competition get in the way? Drama on the rink! I love it. (Andrew)
YAKUZA DEMON KILLERS #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (IDW) – I’m gonna let you in on a little secret: There’s a war raging in Tokyo between the demonic hordes of the underworld and the legendary Japanese organized crime syndicate, The Yakuza! Now that you know there’s no looking away. That’s a lesson that’s gonna be learned the hard way by small-time thief, Ochita, when he stumbles across the conflict whilst in the the midst of a heist. I hate it when that happens. (Kris Johnson)
TRUE PATRIOT PRESENTS #1 $3.99 (Chapter House) – If you caught our episode in September with J Torres and Jay Stephens, or listened to our show this past Friday, where we talked with Fred Kennedy and David Bishop, you already know about the awesomeness that is True Patriot Presents. Canadian superhero stories in a cool anthology comic. You’ll get to read about Arrowhead, The Grey Owl, Gull Girl and more. If you’re looking for some superhero action north of the boarder, then look no further. True Patriot has got you covered, standing on guard for thee and all that. (Andrew)
