It’s December and I am swamped with various projects. I thought it might be a good idea to do a little round up of news and my take on ’em.
Hold on to your butts, it’s GRAB BAG TIME!
The Return of Wildstorm with Warren Ellis
Years ago, Warren Ellis came to to the Wildstorm universe and re-engineered Stormwatch, taking it from a typical Image team book and turning into something really interesting. Then he turned Stormwatch into The Authority and it became amazing. Around the same time, he began Planetary, which is one of my all-time favourite series.
It was recently announced that not only is the Wildstorm universe returning (it was melded into the DCU during the New 52 era. This has been undone during DC’s Rebirth storyline… maybe?) but it will be kicked off with a series called The Wild Storm, written by Warren Ellis. Ellis will also serve as curator for the new Wildstorm books, hanging around for at least two years.
Ellis is excellent at re-defining characters. His work with The Authority is proof enough of that. There’s also his work on Counter X, Moon Knight and Karnak to take into consideration. In the cases of Karnak and Moon Knight, these have only been for short stints. It’ll be really interesting to see what he does with two years.
Ghost in the Shell trailer
The trailer for the live-action version of Ghost in the Shell is out and it looks pretty solid. There’s been a lot of controversy over the white-washing of the cast, which I can completely see, but watching this teaser…. everything just felt… right. In a weird way, it reminds me a lot of Sin City: Over-stylized but capturing the look of the anime really well.
Star Wars Rebels Is Still Awesome
Half way through Season 3 and the best thing to come out of Disney buying Lucasfilm is still going strong. And yes, I honestly mean that. Rebels has strong stories, great dialogue and it’s a load of fun while still remaining firmly entrenched in the Star Wars universe. I’m loving the slow build to the eventual confrontation with Thrawn and look forward to new episodes of this show more than anything else I’m watching.
Billy Dee Williams Finally Gets To Play Two-Face
Years ago, Billy Dee Williams played D.A. Harvey Dent in Tim Burton’s take on Batman. Dent was to eventually become Two-Face in later sequels but that never materialized. Legend has it (which Williams has denied) that he was contracted for three films and was paid out for all of them despite never returning to the role. Either way, we never got to see what William’s Two-Face would have been like… or perhaps we will… sort of.
It has been announced that Billy Dee is back as Harvey Dent and Two-Face in the Lego Batman movie. No word on how big the part is but even if it’s just a cameo, this is pretty awesome.
I get to drop a little bit of news. I’m going to be moderating the Harley Quinn Panel featuring Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner. I’m really looking forward as I’m a big fan of both creators and I think it’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun. I’m going to be doing at least two more panels so stay tuned for news.
That’s it for this GRAB BAG. Thanks for reading and I’ll see you all next week.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
