Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. I’ll be flying solo this week and for the next few weeks as Kris Johnson is off due to a Geek Hard Wellness Policy Violation. He was found taking an enhanced substance that unfairly gave him a writing advantage. He’s on a 3 week suspension. Deal with it. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
OPTIMUS PRIME #1 $3.99 (IDW) – It’s Prime’s universe, we’re all just living in it. Now that that whole Revolution thing is out of the way, it’s time for Prime to get down to the business of protecting Earth. Who’s he protecting it from? Alien’s flying a swiss-army-ship that have begun to corkscrew a big friggin’ hole in our planet! That’s who! It’s a new chapter for the Autobot leader, so big he needs his own separate title. Excitement!
GWENPOOL HOLIDAY SPECIAL: MERRY MIX UP $5.99 (Marvel) – You know it’s the holidays when comics like these start hitting the shelves. This appears to be a great one to kick it off! What happens when Gwenpool finds herself in a world where Galactus has taken Santa’s place as the bringer of Gifts on Christmas? What other holidays are messed with in this timeline? How will The Punisher, Spider-Man, Deadpool and the Red Skull fit into the is kooky caper? What do hot pants have to do with it? All I know is that when Wham sings about Namor, we all have a merry Christmas!
WONDER WOMAN #12 $2.99 (DC Comics) – More Year One awesomeness from Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott. I’m calling it right now: If this does not end up on my “best comics of the year” list, something has gone terribly wrong. If you want courageous tales of harrowing adventure, this is the title for you. ‘Nuff Said.
HAWKEYE #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hawkeye’s got her own book! Kate Bishop has hit the big time and she’s heading back to L.A. to celebrate. She’s doing the classic “superhero/private detective” schtick that comic fans know so well. What’s in store for her out west? Whole lotta butt-kicking and arrow-shooting, no doubt. There’s also bound to be a little bit of sass and a great deal of one-liners. Feel like she’s gonna hit the bullseye with this one….not sure if Bullseye will show up. If he does, pretty sure she’ll hit him too.
DC REBIRTH HOLIDAY SPECIAL #1 $9.99 (DC Comics) – Hey, it’s another Holiday Special. That’s two specials on this list for those of you keeping score at home. The title says “holiday” so it’s more than just Christmas on display here. We’ve got a Chanukah story featuring Huntress, a Christmas tale with Flash and his peeps, a pagan party thrown by John Constantine crashed by Wonder Woman. Tons of holiday goodness, you think that would be enough. BUT NO! Paul Dini provides a wraparound adventure featuring his very own Harley Quinn that brings all these stories and holidays together! Celebration!
JESSICA JONES #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – Things don’t ever go well for Jessica Jones. Whatever her plans, they always go sideways. Take her current predicament. She was hired by a woman who ends up getting killed and before Jessica can do anything about it, she gets kidnapped by The Spot of all people. So not only is her day not going well, she has to deal with the fact that she was actually beaten by The Spot. I mean, it’s The Spot. Come on. Let’s see what shit she gets herself into this issue, shall we?
ROCKSTARS #1 $3.99 (Image) – It’s a tale that mixes both modern and classic rock in a deadly game of murder. A music nerd and a rock writer team up to solve a mystery of groupie killings that has resurfaced. What they uncover involves demonic possession and human sacrifice. Can’t get more rock n roll than that, right? Joe Harris and Megan Hutchinson bring the thunder with the first installment of this new series on Wednesday.
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #11 $3.99 (Marvel) – So Iron Fist and Luke Cage just got over having to help Harlem deal with the lastest Civil War Shenanigans, right? Now they gotta get ready for war all over again as it looks as though some major players like Black Cat and Tombstone are fighting over turf. Haven’t the H4H dealt with enough of this fiddle faddle? They always have to deal with something so it might as well be this. It’s a rough life being a hero.
HILLBILLY #4 $3.99 (Albatross Funnybooks) – Hillbilly gotta save some mountain folk after they play an instrument that’s possessed by demons. Fuck being a hero. It’s tougher being a hillbilly.
DOCTOR STRANGE/PUNISHER: MAGIC BULLETS #1 (OF 4) $4.99 (Marvel) – I’m not even sure why I have to write anything here. The title is reason enough to want to buy this book. Then you add in the cover and it’s getting harder and harder to see why you wouldn’t want to read this comic. It’s Doc Strange and the Punisher! The One Man War on Crime is coming to the Sorcerer Supreme for help. You’re not the least bit intrigued by this? Of course you are! This is the title you’ve been waiting for ever since that Original Sin event paired these two together for an issue. It’s Magic, Baby! Sometimes, magic kills.
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
