Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. This is the last week of Kris Johnson’s suspension due to a violation of the Geek Hard Wellness Policy. It’ll be good to have him back ’cause there’s tons of great comics to go round. But for now, all of ’em belong to me. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
BLACK WIDOW #9 $3.99 (Marvel) – One more issue of the best damn spy comic on the shelves before 2016 is all said and done. I guess we’ll finally get that high note we’ve been looking for. This issue is a special one as it features The Winter Soldier. You know, that Bucky Barnes guy? The same Bucky who had a longstanding relationship with Widow? A relationship she has no recollection of due her brain being tampered with? Is any of this ringing any bells? Well even if you’re not in the know, this is gonna be a fun filled issue with secrets and action and all that good stuff. Be sure to pick it up if you want a happy new year.
DEADLY CLASS #25 $3.99 (Image) – Origin stories. When it comes to superheroes, we’re more then fed up with ’em. But if we’re talking about non-superhero comics with their own separate worlds that have multiple characters, it’s nice to get an issue or two that gives us some back story. That’s what we’re getting this week as we look in on the origin of our favourite assassin at King’s Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts. Saya’s past has caught up with her, so we’re taking a trip back to Tokyo to find out what that past is, exactly. Going on a field trip, kids. Pack a lunch and stay close to your buddy.
SUPERGIRL BEING SUPER #1 (OF 4) $5.99 (DC Comics) – The first of two comics on this week’s list written by award winning writer Mariko Tamaki, this mini takes a look at the coming of age of young Kara (a.k.a. Supergirl) as she tries to deal with “Being Super”. But it’s not just self conscious problems she’s got to deal with. There’s also this big earthquake that’s about to level the town of Midvale. She’s got her work cut out for her in this first issue of 4. With artwork by former Geek Hard guest Joelle Jones, that work will look amazing.
LOVE IS LOVE $9.99 (IDW) – A great anthology in honor of those killed in Orlando earlier this year. Show support to the LGBTQ community as all proceeds go to the victims, survivors and their families through Equality Florida. A number of big name comic talents have donated materials to make up this celebration of love in sequential art form. Show some love and pick up the comic.
HULK #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – The second comic penned by Mariko Tamaki, this time with art from Nico Leon. It’s all about control for Jennifer Walters as she tries to pick up the pieces after Civil War II. She’s keeping a quiet rage just bubbling under the surface at bay, but who knows for how long. Being put in a coma and waking up to find out your cousin’s dead will do that to you. It’s time for the She-less Hulk to cut loose in a new series about rage, pain and keepin’ it together.
ASSASSIN’S CREED #14 $4.99 (Titan) – For those of you that need to wash the taste of that shitty Assassin’s Creed movie out of your mouth, here’s the latest issue of the comic. Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery have been rippin’ it up on this book. Check out this comic and try to forget all about that really boring film.
SNOTGIRL #5 $2.99 (Image) – Bryan Lee O’Malley wraps up the first story arc of the first series where he doesn’t do the art. (That’s handled beautifully by Leslie Hung.) Looks like Snotgirl might finally have made a true friend….but at what cost? The drama is always high with this book. Check it out if you’re looking for a little drama in your life.
WONDER WOMAN #13 $2.99 (DC Comics) – So after The Lies comes The Truth. But before we get to The Truth, Steve Trevor’s still trying to deal with The Lies. Some shit has been revealed about Diana and himself that he’s gotta deal with. Steve’s always gets the shit thrown at him. You can’t help but feel sorry for this guy. My Back Issue Bloodbath co-host, Sammy Younan, sure doesn’t. Take a listen to our Wonder Woman episode, then pick up this issue and judge for yourself.
MONSTRESS #9 $3.99 (Image) – Maika’s got a monster inside her. Anyone who’s read this comic knows that. In this issue, another magical and powerful force is going to attempt to eat Maika and her Monster. That should be fun. ‘Nuff Said.
GI JOE #1 $3.99 (IDW) – It’s a new era for the Joe team. They now live in a world with giant robots and space invaders and micro-guys. The fight for freedom just got whole lot bigger, amirite? The Joes are not just protecting the USA, they’re protecting the world! It’s a tall order with a possible new recruit that will definitely change the game. But all your favs are there, too. Scarlet’s heading up a a team that features Snake-Eyes, Roadblock, Shipwreck and more! IDW has tried a number of variations on this team. Let’s see if they get it right this time, shall we? YO JOE!
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
