Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
ALL STAR BATMAN #6 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Scott Snyder and Jock (the duo behind Wytches and Batman: The Black Mirror) re-team for Cold to the Core! Yessir, if that title leads you to believe this tale will focus on Mr. Freeze, then you would be correct, and I couldn’t be more excited. When handled correctly, Victor Fries has been the subject of some of the best Bat-tales of the past 30 years, and, with the talent involved here, I’m expecting another classic. (Kris Johnson)
JUGHEAD #12 $3.99 (Archie) – King for a day. That’s what’s at stake in the latest issue of Jughead when the gang faces off in a video game go-kart race for all the marbles. The “marbles” in this case is the chance to be in charge and have the rest of group do whatever you say for 24 hours. What’s the worst that can happen in this situation? If you guessed Reggie winning the race, you’d be right. How will Juggy and company survive the wrath of King Reggie? Find out this Wednesday. (Andrew)
MIGHTY THOR #15 $3.99 (Marvel) – Ever want to see Hobbits throw down with Klingons? Or an Orc tussle with a Vulcan? Yeah, me neither. But those’re ideas so weird that I kinda wanna see them now. Luckily for me, Marvel has the next best thing hitting the shelves this Wednesday, as The Mighty Thor #15 brings with it the opening salvo of The Asgard/Shi’ar War! With a script by Jason Aaron and pencils from my pick for 2016 Artist of the Year, Russell Dauterman, this is one galactic conflict that should live up to the hype! (Kris Johnson)
MOTOR CRUSH #2 $3.99 (Image) – So Domino is using the drug Crush to get an edge in pro motorcycle racing. You could says she’s “crushing” it with Crush. It’s a pretty big secret she’s keeping from her dad. But that’s not her biggest problem right now. She’s kinda busy right now saving an old flame from life-threatening danger. The former Team Batgirl brings you some more mad-capped action with this high octane adventure. (Andrew)
SPIDER-MAN #12 $3.99 (Marvel) – Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen play tonsil-hockey. I’m sure more stuff will happen in this comic that is expertly plotted, filled with wonderful characterization, and beautiful artwork. But like, people only care about that first thing right now. The tonsil hockey thing. With Miles and Gwen. Kissing it up and whatnot. Big things. (Kris Johnson)
WONDER WOMAN #14 $2.99 (DC Comics) – Year One comes to an end! Diana confronts the God of War (with a little help from Back Issue Bloodbath host Sammy Younan’s favourite supporting character, Steve Trevor) and fulfills her destiny to become Wonder Woman. Yeah, I knew it was going to end like this as well but it’s not about the destination. It’s all about the journey. Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott have taken us for quite a ride. Join ’em for the final lap. (Andrew)
GOD COUNTRY #1 $3.99 (Image) – An old-ass man in an old-ass Texas town gets tossed around by a big-ass tornado as it tears-ass across the countryside. Somehow, the old dude survives the ordeal and finds himself in the calm found at the eye of the storm. Also in the eye of storm: An enchanted sword. Oh yeah, and whole mess of giant, ugly as a monkey’s butt monsters. Better pick up that blade, old timer! Those baddies ain’t gonna slice and dice themselves! (Kris Johnson)
LOBSTER JOHNSON GARDEN OF BONES ONE SHOT $3.99 (Dark Horse) – It’s another Lobster Johnson One Shot! YAY! This time round, LJ’s gotta track down an undead hitman who’s targeted the NYPD. Sounds like fun. I’m in. (Andrew)
SOUTHERN BASTARDS #16 $3.50 (Image) – GUT CHECK continues as Coach Boss expands his criminal activities in an attempt to maintain his grip on Craw County, Alabama. Still one of the best monthly comics on the shelf. Still one of the nastiest books ever produced. Still one of Jason Aaron’s best creator-owned series’. Still one of my picks of the week. (Kris Johnson)
JESSICA JONES #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – So yeah, this new Jessica Jones title has been a little screwy. Jessica’s broken up her family and Luke is pissed about it. Her daughter is somehow full grown now and swinging a Captain Amercia Shield. Oh, there’s also a shady criminal type that wants access to all her super-secrets. What’s a girl gotta do to just get some normal detective work done? All I know is that while everything’s gone to shit for Jess, I’m lovin’ every crazy minute of it. Never a dull moment. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
