Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
TMNT UNIVERSE #7 $4.99 (IDW) – Ryan Ferrier and our pal Adam Gorham begin a new, 2-issue tale in this week’s edition of Universe that focuses on everyone’s favourite Turtle-Tech duo: Donatello and Metalhead. If you’ve been reading the Turtles books for the past few years (and you really should’ve because they’re just straight shots of awesome), you know our pal Donnie has had a pretty rough go of it lately. The dude basically died, had his mind transferred into Metalhead, and then was transferred back once his pals managed to patch his broken fleshy-bits back together. To say he’s had a brutal time processing all of that would be putting it lightly. Meanwhile, Metalhead himself was blown to smithereens and thought destroyed beyond repair. But Donnie, being the turtle he is, won’t accept such a conclusion. Thus, these two issues are all about Donnie putting himself back together while he literally reassembles his robotic pal and saviour. Pretty heavy stuff, to be sure. But this is the Turtles we’re talking about here, so it’s bound to be a helluva lotta fun as well. (Kris Johnson)
MONSTRESS #10 $3.99 (Image) – Hey kids, don’t know how many times I’ve told you to check out this series, but I’m telling you again RIGHT NOW! Horror fantasy in an alternate, matriarchal Japan that touches on racism and slavery that’s also packed with action, mayhem and intrigue! It’s one of the best damn comics to hit the stands. In this issue, Maika confronts an evil ghost and finds out more of the mystery regarding her past. This comic’s a page turner. March into you local comic shop this week and turn that page, dammit! (Andrew)
KAMANDI CHALLENGE #2 (OF 12) $3.99 (DC Comics) – Did you pick up that first issue? Fun as hell, right? Well then picking up this next one is an absolute no-brainer. What’s that? You still wanna know who the creative team is? How about Pete Tomasi and Neal Adams? What’s that? You’re totally gonna pick up this comic? No shit. (Kris Johnson)
THE OLD GUARD #1 $3.99 (Image) – Three words: Greg-Fucking-Rucka. This man has been on fire lately. Between Lazarus and Wonder Woman, he’s been ripping it up. Now here comes Old Guard, drawn by Leandro Fernandez, guaranteed to bring you even more Rucka awesomeness. Andy and her crew are immortal warriors, old soldiers who never die. They live their lives as soldiers for hire, helping those who seek them out and can afford their services. Kind of like the A-Team…..except being immortal, that is. But you know how it goes. You live long enough, you see and feel some serious shit that make you wish you were dead. Can’t wait to see (but not feel) what it’s all about this Wednesday. (Andrew)
JIM HENSON’S POWER OF DARK CRYSTAL #1 (OF 12) $3.99 (Boom) – The Power of the Dark Crystal film is dead. Long live The Power of the Dark Crystal comic! For the fans of the original Dark Crystal film, the wait for an official sequel has been interminable. Year after year, we were told a continuation of the saga of Jen and Kira was on its way, being developed from notes left behind by Jim Henson himself, only to find in 2015 that project was all but kaput due to creative difficulties. Then in late 2016, a ray of hope shone down on fandom in the form of an announcement from Boom! Studios: The tale would be told as a comic! So fellow fans of The Dark Crystal, your time has come to revisit the land of Skesis, Mystics, and Gelflings; to learn of a new race called The Firelings who struggle under the reign of a King Jen and Queen Kira that know nothing of their subjects’ plight, nor make any effort to understand it. Return to the world of Thra this Wednesday and get your sweet, sweet Henson dark fantasy fix. I can’t wait. (Kris Johnson)
PUNISHER AND BULLSEYE TP DEADLIEST HITS $15.99 (Marvel) – Everybody knows that the Punisher and Bullseye are awesome. What some of you might not know is that they each had miniseries a few years back that separately summed up their awesomeness. In Trial of the Punisher, the Punisher goes on Trial (not just a clever title, eh?) but there’s more going than what’s happening in front of the judge. In Perfect Game, Bullseye’s been hired to take out a major league pitcher. Each story is a true representation of their character. Now you can get both great minis in one handy, dandy trade. Pretty awesome, I know. (Andrew)
DARKNESS VISIBLE #1 $3.99 (IDW) – In this new IDW series from Brendan Cahill, Mike Carey and Arvind Ethan David, humanity has been living side by side with demon-kind for the last 80 years. For the most part, it seems things have been peaceful. But is that perception reality or a careful illusion constructed by an insidious race hell-bent on humanity’s genocide? Detective Daniel Aston will get closer to the truth than he ever wanted when a demon sets up shop inside his soul and matters are complicated further when his daughter is endangered by his new predicament. Those damn demons, never making things easy. (Kris Johnson)
WONDER WOMAN #17 $2.99 (DC Comics) – Hey look, it’s another comic penned by Greg Rucka! The Truth story arc continues and nothing will ever be the same for Diana again…..I know, that’s the going theme with the book right now but I just wanted to reiterate it for those just joining us. Check it out! (Andrew)
BELFRY (ONE-SHOT) $3.99 (Image) – This week, Image Comics brings us a new one-shot from Gabriel Hardman, in which an airliner crash on a remote island is only the tragic starting point of a descent into horror for each and every damned soul on board. As they explore the island and attempt to escape, the survivors will encounter unspeakable terrors that will shake them to their very souls… but mostly there’ll be bat-monsters constantly trying to kill them. Lots and lots of bat-monsters. Bat-monsters are cool. You like cool things. Buy the comic. (Kris Johnson)
SNOTGIRL TP VOL 01 $9.99 (Image) – If you were to tell me a year ago that I would be lovin’ a comic about a fashion blogger, I woulda told you that you were a few bricks shy of a load. But I guess I’m the one missing a few bricks because I can’t get enough of Snotgirl. Written by Bryan Lee O’Malley with fantastic artwork by Leslie Hung, Snotgirl is a character study of someone who strives to keep a perfect facade in the eyes of her readers and her “friends” (aka the folks she hangs out with and secretly judges). But when a freak accident happens, she may be the suspect for a murder….or not. Pick up the first volume of this highly addictive comic. (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
