This week’s column has been a bit rough for me to write. Last week, Chris Cornell passed away which hit me a bit harder than I thought it would. This week, Roger Moore passed away. Moore was my first Bond and due in part to that, in many ways is my favorite Bond.
And then Manchester happened.
I’ve never been to Manchester but to my music geek heart, it’s a place I would like to visit. It is the home of Joy Division and New Order. It’s where Factory Records was born. It was home to The Smiths. Despite never having been there, Manchester is part of my musical DNA.
Unfortunately, the world can be a cold and cruel place sometimes.
With all of this going on, I try my best to remember the good thing and the fun things. That’s not to say that we should ignore the world around us. Far from it. Just as you’re taking in the bad, remember to take in the good.
Remember that there are a ton of people of all faiths, creeds, and colors that helped out the people who needed help in Manchester.
Remember that while Roger Moore has passed on, you can always reach for your copy of The Spy Who Loved Me, Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun.
Chris Cornell may be gone but there’s always Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, and his solo work. You can play songs like “Seasons” or “The Promise” and just lose yourself.
It’s a world where Mignola, Darrow, Aaron, Brubaker and Phillips are regularly making great comics. A world where we are going to get a Blade Runner sequel that might even be good. A world where Run the Jewels gives away albums but still makes a good living from their music.
It is a world of art and music and fun.
To use a quote from one of my favorite Rocky films:
Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.
We’re taking a beating this year and we are just hitting the halfway point. Don’t give up, keep moving forward. Love when you can, help when you can and don’t stop moving forward.
And if you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
