Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
FLASH #22 $2.99 (DC Comics) – The Button Part 4! Honestly, if you love superhero comics in general and DC Comics specifically then I have a really hard time believing you’re not already reading this crossover. The first three parts have featured storytelling innovation, callbacks to fan-favourite moments in DC history, and even a side-jaunt over to the previously thought destroyed Flashpoint universe. The whole damn thing has just been great, comic-booky fun and you deserve a little fun in your life, you know what I mean? Pick up this comic. (Kris Johnson)
JUGHEAD #15 $3.99 (Archie) – You know when you try to do something nice for someone and it just causes shit for them? That’s what Sabrina does here as he tries to help out Jughead and it leads to him being Riverdale’s most eligible batchelor. Wait a second, how is that a bad thing? Well, knowing Jughead, it gets bad pretty quick. Sometime a guy just wants to eat his burgers in peace, ya know? (Andrew)
SECRET EMPIRE #2 (OF 9) $4.99 (Marvel) – After the brutal actions of Hydra-Cap in Secret Empire #0 and #1 scattered the heroes of Earth to the wind, all hope appears lost. For those fighting on the side of right who’ve been trapped inside the Darkforce Dimension, this goes doubly true as even if they knew where hope was, how could they ever hope to find it? It’s really dark in there, yo… It’s right there in the name! ahem. Anywho, Doctor Strange and his ragged band are going to try their damndest to find a way out of their obsidian prison nonetheless and an unlikely hero (and newly minted tv star) may just be the key. (Kris Johnson)
PI JANE: THE SALAD DAYS GN $18.99 (Caliber) – Jane is my kinda detective. She uses pop culture relevance to solve cases. She sees the world in grayscale but has a full colour imagination. She’s got an interesting fantasy life running in her head. She also doesn’t make enough off of being a detective so she has to temp at an office during the day. I know P.I. Jane. I am P.I. Jane. (Andrew)
GRRL SCOUTS: MAGIC SOCKS #1 $3.99 (Image) – When it comes to making fun comics, Jim Mahfood knows how to do it. When it comes to starring in fun comics? The Grrl Scouts know how to do that. If you’ve never read the Grrl Scouts before, have no fear as this adventure is sure to be easily accessible and chock full of pulse-pounding awesomeness. Book a ride to Freak City this Wednesday and never look back. (Kris Johnson)
TRIGGERMAN TP $19.99 (Titan) – From the dude that directed The Warriors, 48 Hrs. and Last Man Standing comes an epic mobster tale. Gun for hire Roy Nash is sprung from jail to do one last hit. If he says no, they kill the love of his life who he never thought he’d see again. Just when he thought he was out, they pull him back in! (Andrew)
STAR TREK TNG: MIRROR BROKEN #1 (OF 6) $3.99 (IDW) – Dickhead Picard (from that alternate Mirror Universe where everyone is a dickhead and has beastly pipes, wears a goatee, and rocks a muscle-shirt or a dress with boob-window and push-up bra) is the Captain of a ship full of dickheads. The only problem is, he wants to be the Captain of an even bigger and more powerful ship full of dickheads… A ship called the Enterprise. But the Enterprise already has a captain. Who? Enh, probably just some dickhead. This new series tells the story of how Dickhead Picard goes about getting what he wants. The details of which will probably be dickish. (Kris Johnson)
USER HC $29.99 (Image) – Originally published by Vertigo back in the day, Devin Grayson takes you back to the nineties to talk about sexual identity and text based online gaming. The fantastic art skills of John Bolton and Sean Phillips are along for the ride. This book’s cultural relevance still holds up today. Check it out at your local comic shop. (Andrew)
BRITANNIA: WE WHO ARE ABOUT TO DIE #2 (OF 4) $3.99 (Valiant) – The first issue of this new Britannia mini did an excellent job of introducing Anchillia, reintroducing Antonius, and establishing the threat facing the great empire of Rome. Now that all that set up is outta the way, this bad boy is primed to really cut loose. While the monsters gather and the forces of darkness plot their advance, will our heroes be able to solve the mystery at hand and save Rubria’s life? Or will Nero continue to be a crazy motherfucker and do some crazy motherfucking shit? My guess is, regardless of the investigation, Nero will still be batshit and thus act accordingly. (Kris Johnson)
LUKE CAGE #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Don’t ever mess with the people Luke Cage cares about. That’s a rule to live by. Even if they’re somebody who hasn’t popped up in a while. Well apparently, somebody didn’t get the memo. Dr. Noah Burstein, a.k.a. the dude that gave Luke his powers, is dead. When Cage goes to New Orleans for the funeral, he gets the feeling it might not have been an accident. So now Luke’s gonna bust some shit up and get to the bottom of this. Should’ve read the memo, guys! (Andrew)
So there you go. That’s this week’s New Comics. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
