Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
JIMMY’S BASTARDS #1 $3.99 (Aftershock) – James Bond likes to fuck. I mean, that dude really likes to sow them wild oats every damn place he goes. Everybody knows that. Some folks know that intimately. The thing is we never really see any negative consequences of said fucking. And really, what kinda message does that send to the children? Sure, every once in a while a lady who has recently engaged in a bit of the old How’s-Your-Father with said super-spy may catch a bullet. But does that really negatively impact ol’ Jimmy’s Jimmy? Not really. Now Garth Ennis is an observant guy and he noticed this lack of a full moral spectrum in Bond’s stories. So he decided to correct this by creating a book that’s all about negative consequences and how we can learn from the— aww, who am I kidding? Ennis probably just thought a book about all the illegitimate kids Bond has jizzed out over the years coming after daddy dearest would be funny. Looks like Aftershock has done it again. At this point, you should just be buying their whole line. (Kris Johnson)
DEFENDERS #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Damn right this book makes the list this week! Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist. All together in one comic! You’d think they got Netflix series coming out this August or something. Brian Michael Bendis writing DD again. Bendis writing Luke Cage and Iron Fist as a team. Bendis writing Jessica Jones as always. This is like all the things I like Bendis writing in one comic. It’s a deal. It’s a steal. This is the team that’s gonna defend the streets and do it with style. Nothing funny to say here, folks. There’s just too much awesome going on. (Andrew)
DARK DAYS: THE FORGE #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Batman Metal is coming. But before the mega-series from the legendary Batman creative team of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo hits the stand, Snyder sets the table with the help of a few friends. And when I say friends, I mean a murderer’s row of comic industry heavy hitters. James Tynion, Jim Lee, John Romita Jr., Andy Kubert, Klaus Janson, and more contribute to this beast of a book that not only introduces the main thrust of the Metal series but also the Immortal Men and a brand new Outsiders team. If you’re looking for A-list talent working with A-list characters there really is no other choice than this comic come Wednesday. (Kris Johnson)
MOTHER RUSSIA #1 (OF 3) $1.50 (Alterna) – Here’s a book that brought me in with it’s G.I. Joe #21 tribute cover and kept me with a pretty cool story. In an alternate WWII era Russia, a zombie apocalypse has broken out and one soviet sniper finds herself protecting a defenseless baby boy from the undead horde. Looks like it’s gonna be a fun ride. And did I mention the G.I. Joe #21 tribute cover? (Andrew)
BRIGGS LAND: LONE WOLVES #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Do you find the overabundance of absurdly well-armed private militias in the States to be more than a little unnerving? Yeah, me too. Well what happens when one of those militias turns into a secessionist movement? And what if that secessionist movement has a hundred square acres of wilderness from which to plan and stage any potential skirmishes? Bad stuff? Did you guess bad stuff? Yeah, Brian Wood and Chater did, too. Climb on board the second volume this week and find out why AMC jumped all over this bad boy. (Kris Johnson)
WONDER WOMAN #24 $2.99 (DC Comics) – She’s ruling the box office and for the past year, she’s been kicking ass in the comics as well. Greg Rucka’s run is winding down but there’s still some great tales being told in the meantime. You don’t need a lasso of truth to get me to tell you this book is pretty rad. (Andrew)
OLD MAN LOGAN #25 $3.99 (Marvel) – What’s old is new again as one of the all-time greatest comic book rivalries is re-imagined for a new age. Once again the Canucklehead will stand toe to toe with ol’ Jade Jaws as the one and only Wolverine throws down with the Incredible Hulk… Sort of. So, like not the “one and only”. Sure, it’s old ass, alternate universe versions rather than the presently dead iterations of the characters we know and love. But seriously, Old Man Logan vs. the freaking Maestro? I’m there, brother. Logan already carved up one well-aged, hillbilly version of the Hulk back in the Wasteland. Let’s see how he fares against the super-intelligent despotic brand of gamma monster. (Kris Johnson)
ADVENTURES OF SUPERHERO GIRL HC EXPANDED EDITION $16.99 (Dark Horse) – One of the funniest superhero satire comics for all ages is now available in a big, beautiful hardcover edition….again! If you’ve never read Faith Erin Hicks’ look at the more mundane side of superhero-ing, do yourself a favor and pick up this sacred tome. And if you have read it, this book comes with two new stories, artwork from a slew of great illustrators and a foreword by Kurt-Freakin’-Busiek! Need I say more? (Andrew)
DAMNED #2 $3.99 (Oni) – The first issue of Damned was one of the true highlights of the week when it hit. Flawed characters clinging to the underbelly of society, a fresh setting, as well as clever and tremendously interesting takes on some very old and well-worn mythology come together in this perfect witches’ brew of supernatural criminality. If you’re looking for something new to try out, I highly recommend this prohibition era tale of a man who cannot stay dead surrounded by mafioso demons that want to kill him. (Kris Johnson)
ANDERSON: THE DEEP END ONE SHOT $3.99 (Rebellion/2000AD) – Hey, remember that awesome Judge Dredd film that came out in 2012 that only cool people saw? You don’t? Well, I guess we know who’s not cool, now don’t we? Dredd was awesome. Now fans of the movie can enjoy this comic continuation that focuses on Anderson. This young Judge is still green and a bit shaken from the events of the movie. Now she’s has to find a way to shake off those doubts of hers so she can handle a demon that’s stirring up some shit by possessing people. ‘Nuff Said. (Andrew)
