Welcome back to Part 4 of The 2017 Geek Hard Holiday Gift Guide. Each Year, Andrew and I bring your our picks for the best gifts for the geek in your life. In parts One, Two and Three of our guide, both Andrew and I showed you some gift options under $300 dollars and Stocking Stuffers. For Part 4, I bring in the big guns for the gifts from $300 to STOOPID! It’s the Expensive Edition! That’s right, it’s time to take a look at some cool ideas for the those looking to make a bigger splash this Christmas with a last minute, expensive gift. This is the part of the list that always gets me excited. You might find this stuff cool, but it would be insane to give some of them as gifts.
$300 and Beyond
A fun gift for those who like to challenge themselves daily… I mean by the minute to know what time it really is. With 4 levels of difficulty, it changes calculations once per minute (or once every 10 seconds for the true math wizards). Might also be a great gift for the math teacher in your life who would like to torture their students each class. The more I think about this clock, the more I absolutely love it.
Long time followers know that I love watches and i love Star Wars. Bam! Here comes Nixon with this brilliantly simple designed watch with the Imperial Logo on the face. It’s a subtle but recognizable nod to the franchise. From a galaxy far, far away… to your wrist. It’s a great gift for both the Star Wars fan and watch collector.
Keeping with my love of Star Wars, Sideshow Collectibles/Hot Toys brings us these amazingly detailed, 1/6 scale figures of Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader. Their scenes together in A New Hope were great fun and this set comes with a Interrogator Droid and Tarkin’s chair from the meeting room. A fitting combo to go with these great figures.
From one classic space franchise to another. This set comes with the core rule book, 4 sets of figures, dice, character sheets and, of course, the awesome looking collector’s box to store all the fun. Fans of Star Trek and role playing games alike will fall in love with this set. I feel an epic game night brewing in houses across the world right now.
Some fun designer boots from Fashion Line Rag & Bone. The boots were inspired by Star Wars but are still able to be worn anywhere as they casually hide their subtle inspiration. Classic, clean design that can be worn to almost any event you can think of. A great gift for the person in your life who wants style and design mixed in with a little geekery.
Did you think I was really done with Star Wars? Yeah right! When I saw this set from Lego, I felt weak in the knees. This set looks so utterly amazing and highly detailed, you would be crazy not to want it. Scaled to fit the mini-figs, it comes with both the classic Empire Strikes Back and Force Awakens mini-figs – it even has a couple of Porgs from The Last Jedi. You will have endless fun flipping back and forth with the era specific communication dishes. The force is strong with this gift.
As any board game fan and regular player knows, having a good gaming table is key. This allows for your traditional style table top board games like Pandemic, Dead of Winter or classic Risk.. It’s also great for those long RPG sessions with sweet add-on accessories like cup holders, DM shields and more. All this and it’s completely portable, folding up into a convenient carrying case for easy transport.
On my Part 2 list, I gave some good suggestions for vinyl albums to pick up. Now here is a sleekly designed turntable to listen to all those vinyl LP’s you have been collecting lately. When you have great 180 gram vinyl to play, you want an equally great sounding turntable to let that magic play. Serious audio junkies only, need apply.
When the first Iron Man hit theatres almost 10 years ago, we had no idea how iconic it would become. Now all these years later, you have a great opportunity to get this amazing life-size figure of the Mark III suit from the movie. Standing at 6′ 10″ (with base), it’s not for the faint of heart but is perfect for the true Stark enthusiast in your life. Plus, it’s a great show piece for your movie collection. I’m thinking about ordering this right after I finish this list off. Now to just win the lotto to get the cash to buy it.
Another of my favourite childhood film franchises was James Bond. I remember watching that iconic The Spy Who Loved Me scene when he transformed his Lotus Esprit S1 into a submarine and back again. Now for a paltry $2 million dollars, you can also relive that fantasy with this submarine car from Hammacher Schlemmer. This electric vehicle reaches speeds of 2 knots/hr at 33′ depths and up to 75 mph on land. This is the kind of fun that the rich can have whenever they want to.
So there you go. Some cool and expensive gift ideas for this festive season. That’s it. We’re done for this year! Come back next year for more top picks for cool gifts for the nerd in your life.
