The Battle rages on. It’s Earth’s Mightiest vs. the Children of the Atom. The Phoenix is coming which is reason enough for Hero and Mutant to clash and the Marvel Universe will never be the same again! And Geek Hard will be there to report on the battles and advise on the aftermath (well, I will, at least). No issue will be forgotten and no plot point left unturned. Hard hitting analysis will ensue. Consider this you’re Avengers vs. X-men Post show. Where Round 3 was a slow building page turner, Round 4 has more of a “WHAM-BAM, Thank you Maam” feel to it. This issue is once again brought to you by the amazing pencils of John Romita Jr. with Jonathan Hickman on the helm in regards to scripting duties. The way things are laid out in this go around, it’s like Hickman decided to cut the scenes like a Michael Bay film but still keep a cohesive plot. So just like last time, our story opens on Wolverine. Last time we saw him, he was just thrown out of a plane by Captain America. Just because Logan’s only plan to stop the Phoenix from destroying the planet was to find Hope and kill her, Cap thought that may be going a little to far and dropped him in the arctic. Well it appears that somebody was waiting for him up there and left a trail of beer cans for him to follow. That person just happens to be the girl he’s sworn to kill. Hope instead offers a truce. She believes that if she bonds with the Phoenix force, she will be able to control the power and bring about a new world for the mutant race. But if by chance she can’t control it, she wants Logan by her side to take her out. Wolverine agrees to the terms and two head off their next destination – to get themselves a rocket. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Emma Frost are hiding out and apparently have no better leads to tracking Hope down than to go peeping inside Cap’s brain. Captain America is busy at the time, duking it out with Gambit in the Savage Land. Cerebra (the mutant locator at the Jean Grey School for the Gifted) has pinpointed 5 possible places where Hope could be in the world. So the X-Men and the Avengers are split up into teams at these various locations. Must be nice to be able to sit on your ass while your X-Minions go do the grunt work of searching for you. After scanning the minds of the combatants at each of the locations and seeing that Hope is nowhere to be found, Emma camps out in Cap’s brain, proving once again that even she knows that Captain America will know where she is before the X-Men will. And it turns out he does. A trip to the moon is in store for all parties involved. Who knows what will happen next? As I stated above, this was definitely the fastest issue of AvsX that...

Among other projects, Ramon’s latest published work included A Tale of Sand, the graphic novel based on a 1974 un-filmed script of Jim Henson that was released last year and garnered Perez an Eisner nomination.
It’s been a week and a half and I’ve just now gotten the chance to sit down and check out all the books I picked up at this year’s Toronto Comic Arts Festival. The comic exhibitors are what makes TCAF great, as they are the central focus of the show. Every year, I always end up discovering a new cartoonist or comic creator that I then consume all of their body of work. And all it takes is a little bit of walking around and checking out a few tables. Maybe one of the following books will lead me to my new favourite writer or artist. Time will tell. Everythingness (Neil Jam Comics) Cartoonist Neil Fitzpatrick presents a comic set in the Neil Jam Universe. What’s the Neil Jam Universe? As he explains it, “it’s a cartoon universe inhabited by a funky group of individuals. They just do what they do, living the ultimate comic strip life. Can you handle this?” The short answer is yes I can. The book follows the exploits of Willis and Ona as they glide through life along with their friends Jerry, a bird, and Buck, a rabbit, and attempt to gain a deeper understanding of existence. Oh, and the creator shows up as well. By that I mean Neil himself….and God too. In the Neil Jam Universe, are they not one and the same? Definitely worth a read and the art is fun. I especially love the portrayal of God on the front cover. That’s what drew my attention in the first place. Das Moustache in “THE UNSTOPPABLE HEARTSTOPPER” (Mike Luckas) This book caught my eye because it had the energy of an eighties video game and looked like it could’ve ended up on screen in an episode of Captain N, the Games Master. The story revolves around Das Moustache, a legendary national hero and fighting champion. He’s scheduled to fight a creature under the control of Dana Jones, an evil pirate captain who’s got her sights set on pillaging the fair island of Manhattan. If Das Moustache loses, she gets her way and the city of New York is hers for the taking. But if he wins, she and her ragtag fleet of ships have to clean of the harbour and get outta town. A simple premise with a few traditional characters and plot devices thrown in, including the plucky reporter Girl Girlington who also sports a heroic alter ego known as the Heartstopper. It’s a fast-paced read and there’s some great story progression in the short amount of pages. Cartoonist Mike Luckas wears his influences on his sleeve and that’s a good thing. For anyone who’s a fan of the old Punch Out game for the NES, this one’s for you. Teach English In Japan (Cloudscape Comics) Writer Jonathan Dalton and Artist Jeffrey Ellis bring you a story of two men taking the journey to Japan to teach english. I know you’re floored by this revelation. The title didn’t give that away,...

Another show that will sink your destroyer. This week, we go to war on the open sea. Listen as Andrew and Mr. Green review Battleship, the latest offering from Universal Studios hitting theatres this Friday. Will this nautical action thriller rise above the rest or have trouble staying a float? Will Taylor Kitsch’s deep voice be enough to keep from being left adrift? Will Rihanna be able to act her way out of this alien invasion film? Will Liam Neeson actually have more than 3 scenes in the whole movie? All of these questions will be answered by our local film experts as they weigh in on this popcorn summer blockbuster. But the expert opinions don’t end there. Tune in to hear the boys opinions on the latest in comics, movies and television. Andrew and Mr. Green will be blunt and opinionated as always. Listen as they drop some knowledge and maybe a few punch-lines on your collective asses. All this, plus the news and reviews that you’ve come to expect, right here on Geek Hard.
This is a column that we thought we would do each week, picking some books that we think look and sound interesting. Both Andrew and I are going to make some selections that we hope you try out and enjoy. Now this will probably lead to some name calling or fist fights at some point but this is not about which company is better or my general dislike for all things Marvel. No, we want to suggest some titles you may not be reading today but you might like if you did. By the way, there is no order to this list at all so deal with it. New Books Released: 05/16/12 DAREDEVIL #13 $2.99 (Marvel) This book was on all the top ten lists of last year and it hasn’t slowed down any over the past few months. The BEST super hero book on the market today. (Andrew) STAR WARS DAWN OF THE JEDI FORCE STORM #4 $3.50 (Darkhorse) Yes, Lucas continues to bug me with his constant tinkering of the franchise. However all the expanded universe stuff is always interesting to check out. (Mr.Green) THE SHADOW #2 $3.99 (Dynamite) I read the first issue and enjoyed it. I’m interested to see where Garth Ennis will take us in this issue. (Andrew) SAUCER COUNTRY #3 $2.99 (Vertigo) X-Files meets the West Wing. It’s about a U.S. Senator who is Hispanic and a woman trying to be President of the United States. However there is one small problem: she is claiming that she was abducted by aliens. It’s really cool and you should check it out. (Mr.Green) AVENGERS ACADEMY #30 $2.99 (Marvel) This is the book where Christos Gage shines. And in this issue, it looks like there’s a throwdown with Sebastian Shaw. Who doesn’t want to see that? (Andrew) MANHATTAN PROJECTS #3 $3.50 (Image) Jonathan Hickman’s alterna-history dealing with the U.S. war department gathering the best and brightest for the true Manhattan Project. Einstein is out and seeing what havoc he wreaks will be awesome. Can’t wait to read this issue. (Mr.Green) AVENGERS: BLACK WIDOW STRIKES #2 (of 3) $2.99 (Marvel) I’m usually not crazy about movie tie-in comics but it’s got a pretty good story so far and it’s got Agent Coulson. Can’t go wrong there. (Andrew) SECRET SERVICE #2 (OF 7) $2.99 (Icon) I’m not really sure what to think of this story yet but I like it. Millar & Gibbons are a hard act to have any hate against as their projects are always fun and interesting. (Mr.Green) THE SHADE #8 (of 12) $2.99 (DC Comics) It’s great to see James Robinson writing a character where it’s obvious how much fun he’s having. And we get to share in that fun with the 5 remaining issues of this series. (Andrew) WINTER SOLDIER #5 $2.99 (Marvel) Again I hate Marvel, yet Ed Brubaker continues to make me eat my words. Very cool spy thriller set in the Marvel proper. Read it and you won’t regret it. (Mr.Green) So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you thought....

As you can tell by previous columns, I love movies. I watch a lot of them. And ever since we (my girlfriend and I) stopped watching cable tv, we watch even more movies. But, as I’ve discovered from talking to many a youngster over the past few months, there are a lot of classic films that get lost in the shuffle. I am now hoping to right this wrong by presenting a semi-regular feature to my column where I’m going to pick a genre and tell you about at least ten films in that genre that you must see. Now in this column, I’m tackling comedy. Comedy is very subjective. For over two years, I wrote about comedy in various forms over at Bite TV’s website and what I found funny is not necessarily what everyone else found funny. Given my particular age, you’re going to find a lot more films from the 80′s in here than somebody younger then me, so please take that with a grain of salt. Take this list for what you will but for you youngsters out there, say below the age of 24, it is a very good chance you need to read this list and watch these films for the betterment of your very soul. Airplane! Airplane! is a comedy that works due to seriousness. A comedic take on the Airport movies of the 70′s (essentially a genre where the aircraft is in trouble due mechanical or pilot problems) and uses every troupe the genre had as a joke. What makes this film really work is that the main actors are all playing it straight. There’s added laughs due to the fact that all of these actors were pretty much serious actors at the time (Robert Stack, Llyod Bridges, Peter Graves). This was the film that brought Leslie Neilsen into comedy, a genre he is now more associated with. The other thing that stands out about Airplane! is the fact that it’s not particularly dated. Sure the genre of airport films is non-existent but Airplane! is still really funny. Young Frankenstein When I was a young lad, around 12 or so, my Uncle Bill gave me a video tape to watch that probably affected my sense of humor more then any other gift I was ever given. Two films were on it, copied from First Choice (what we now call The Movie Network). The first of those films was Mel Brook’s classic, Young Frankentstein. This film is so wonderfully put together. From filming in black and white to the sets, to the scene transitions, everything about this film was done like the original Universal horror movies… except for the script. Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks’s script is a thing of beauty. Despite the fact that Young Frankenstein is a 1975 parody film of 1931′s Frankenstein, it still carries with it jokes that are timeless and the care put into this film has let it age gracefully. Blazing Saddles...
