Four days at a convention. Seems like a lot of time, right? Well, it may seem like that now but to the uninitiated, that’s no where near enough time to do and see everything you want to see at Fan Expo. Sure, it’s possible but you got to have a game plan. That’s where Geek Hard comes in. Going to shows for as long as we have, you tend to pick up which panels are must see and which aren’t worth the effort. If you go to the website, Fan Expo is giving some suggestions of a few events among the many but some have been left to fend for themselves. We all know by now that Jay and Silent Bob are going to Get Old on Friday. And that earlier that day, two nerds will become one in a big cosplay wedding. But what about every other panel out there. I am Andrew and I fight for the panels!
Here’s a list of panels and events that are worth your precious time away from the convention floor.
Thursday, August 23rd

Gumshoes and Hot Lead – Writing Crime Fiction with Brian Azzarello
5pm in Room 703
I’ve met Brian Azzarello a few times and one thing that I am always certain of is that he can kill me in six different ways. The man has a dark side that is prevalent in his writing. If anybody knows how to write about the gritty world of the criminal mind, it’s him. Join him as he discusses the ins and outs of writing about the seedy criminal underworld that fasinates us genre fans so much. But watch your back. He’s not to be messed with.

Catching Up with David Hayter
12pm in Room 715
David Hayter is one of those guys you can’t help but envy. He’s got a great career as a screenwriter, director, and actor. He’s had a hand in some of the most sucessful superhero movies out there with script work on X-Men, X2 and Watchmen and, on top of that, he’s also known for being the voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Franchise. On Saturday, he’ll be bringing us all up to speed on the work involved in adapting existing material for film and television. Joining him will be author Leslie Livingston, who’s currently working with Hayter on the adaption of her bestselling book, Wondrous Strange, for t.v. To top off the awesome, this panel will be hosted by Adrienne Kress, who’s not only an author herself but also a good friend of Geek Hard. Hopefully she’ll put in a good word and save us a seat for this one.
On the Couch with Ty Templeton
5pm in room 714
Ty Templeton is a quite a character. Aside from being a great artist, he’s also gifted with a quick wit. Watch him as he hosts a conversation with comic industry professionals and other special guests about what’s important to fans and creators alike. This is where we cut through the bullshit and talk about what’s really going on. People gonna speak their minds! Expect some harsh words and chairs to get thrown at this one. (Note: no guarantee that any harsh words will be spoken or any furniture will be thrown….but wouldn’t it be cool if there is?)
Rare 35mm Print Screening of Clive Barker’s Candyman
8pm offsite at The Tiff Bell Lightbox Theatre (350 King Street West)
Leave it to Rue Morgue to have something really cool up their sleeve for Fan Expo. Not only will they be screening this rare print of a much loved Clive Barker Film in one of the best theatres in Toronto, but they’ll also have the Candyman himself, Tony Todd, a guest at the Expo, onhand for Q&A after the screening. To seal the deal, they have film critic guru Richard Crouse, another guest of the convention, to host the whole affair. This is gonna be one to see.
Sunday, August 26th

Kick off the last day of the con with this special screening of the new series about eveyone’s favourite archer, Ollie Queen. Then join the cast of Arrow for a special Q&A and autograph session immediately following.
The Writers Guild of Canada Presents: Todd and the Book of Pure Evil – How it Started and Where It’s Going
2pm in Room 714
Todd and the Book of Pure Evil was a series that gave us 2 seasons of awesome and was gone too soon. But what if it’s not gone yet? Not entirely. Join the creators of Todd, Craig David Wallace, Ian Malone and Andrew Rosen along with actors Melanie Leishman and Bill Turnbull as they discuss the past and future of the cult t.v. series. Come and see a bunch of creative people talk about a series that had a lot of heart….and probably make dick and fart jokes. It will be entertaining, to say the least.
Celebrity Q & A Session with Billy West
4pm in Room 701
Billy West is the voice of a slew of cartoons you’ve seen over the years. Ren and Stimpy, Futurama, Doug, and more! He’s a great character actor and a funny guy. Here’s your chance to ask him a question…but make it a good one. You don’t want to waste his time. He might be the voice of Fry but he’s not as absent minded as him….we hope. Watch this man of a thousand voices interact with his audience and charm the pants off everybody.
So these are my picks on what you should be checking out at this year’s Fan Expo Canada. These are just the tip of the iceberg of what’s out there. For a full schedule of all the panels and special events that Fan Expo has cooking for the whole 4 days, head over to their website and check it out!
Hope to see you all there and if you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
