This column each week, is to help you picking some books that we think look and sound interesting. Both Andrew and I are going to make some selections that we hope you try out and enjoy. Now this will probably lead to some name calling or fist fights at some point but this is not about which company is better or my general dislike for all things Marvel. No, we want to suggest some titles you may not be reading today but you might like if you did. By the way, there is no order to this list at all so deal with it.
New Books Released: 10/10/12
CREATOR OWNED HEROES #5 $3.99 (Image) A great jumping on point as this issue begins 2 new stories, Killswitch and Black Sparrow. Plus an interview with Amanda Connor and much, much more! Jimmy told me to buy this book and for you to do it also. And you should always listen to Jimmy. (Andrew)
WALKING DEAD MICHONNE SPECIAL $2.99 (Image) A reprint of Walking Dead #19 and a story of Michonne’s origin first printed in Playboy. A nice addition to your collection if you missed out on the Playboy story. Also this might have something to do with a certain TV show returning to AMC this weekend but that would be blatant marketing and no TV/Comic exec would do that, right? (Mr. Green)
UNCANNY AVENGERS #1 $3.99 (Marvel) As the dust settles from Avengers vs. X-Men, out comes this new title by Rick Remender and John Cassaday. It’s got both Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Marvel’s merry mutants all on one team….and apparently, Havok’s the leader. My intrigue is piqued. And I’m never one to not check out a new Avengers Title. (Andrew)
STEAMPUNK HALLOWEEN 2012 #1 $3.50 (Antarctic Press) A little comic book fun for the Halloween season. Plus, it’s got the ever so popular steampunk angle going for it too, which for some reason is very big at the moment. Regardless, I always like when we see established characters redone in a new and interesting way that is different than what we have seen before. (Mr. Green)
STUMPTOWN: THE CASE OF THE BABY IN THE VELVET CASE #2 $3.99 (Oni Press) The first issue of this series was great as was the original mini-series. If you missed out on the fun last month, track down that issue and get on board for this one. Dex is bound get in over her head again and that makes for the best stories. Greg Rucka tells a detective story like no one else. (Andrew)
PUNK ROCK JESUS #4 $2.99 (Vertigo) This is one wild and crazy ride. Each issue has built upon the last and provide a very interesting background for each of the characters to work in. Chris aka Jesus 2 is getting older and more petulant after the last issue but he really seemed to turn a corner. It will be interesting to see how he handles what’s coming up for him in this issue. I can’t wait to read it. (Mr. Green)
MORNING GLORIES #22 $2.99 (Image) This is another one of those books that I have to recommend every time because it wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t. We over 20 issue in and there still a ton of surprises in store. Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma have created a world unlike any other in comics today. (Andrew)
PHANTOM STRANGER #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) An interesting character that I don’t know if he should have his own book. But with his ties to the coming Trinity War and supposed prominence in the nDCU, it only figures this would happen. Well lets just hope this is good. (Mr. Green)
STUFF OF LEGEND TOY COLLECTOR #1 (of 5) $3.99 (Th3rd World) Ever since the first episode of Geek Hard, I have been singing the praises of this series. As we enter an new chapter in the lives of the faithful toys who’s master has been kidnapped by the Boogeyman, the team is split up and full of doubt and despair. Will they find their way back to their objective? Always unpredictable, this book keeps me on the edge of my seat every time I read it. (Andrew)
BATMAN #13 $3.99 (DC Comics) Well here it is folks, issue #13. This marks the return of the Joker to the nDCU. Snyder and Capullo are promising very big things here but let’s be honest, this is the Joker we’re talking about. To most fans he only needs to walk through a panel for him to be awesome. After the amazing Court of Owls arc I’m looking forward to seeing how this pans out going forward. No pressure here on the boys… nope, none at all. (Mr. Green)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you thought. Did we help you discover something new or did you really hate it? Either way at least you tried a new title out and experienced something new.
And if you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
