This column each week, is to help you picking some books that we think look and sound interesting. Both Andrew and I are going to make some selections that we hope you try out and enjoy. Now this will probably lead to some name calling or fist fights at some point but this is not about which company is better or my general dislike for all things Marvel. No, we want to suggest some titles you may not be reading today but you might like if you did. By the way, there is no order to this list at all so deal with it.
New Books Released: 10/17/12
PUNISHERMAX TP HOMELESS $15.99 (Marvel) Jason Aaron’s run on Punisher is by far one of the best ever. In this trade, we see Frank Castle, fresh out of prison and slowly building himself back up to take on the Kingpin. It’s raw and gritty. It’s the Punisher. (Andrew)
SAUCER COUNTRY #8 $2.99 (Vertigo) I love to promote this book. It is about a US Presidential hopeful who may or may not have been abducted by aliens. While that is the major storyline we are also treated to commentary on Anglo/Hispanic relations and the issues surrounding the south west US. A very good book that strikes a balance between fun and informative. (Mr. Green)
SNAKE EYES & STORM SHADOW #18 $3.99 (IDW) “Target: Snake Eyes” continues with chapter two. I continue to be highly impressed with this comic line. Snake’s gotta deal with Cobra and his own clan, the Arashikage. To top it off, the Joes are now coming after him as they think he’s a traitor. It’s tough when a silent ninja commando that everyone looks on as being the best. (Andrew)
FREAKS OF THE HEARTLAND SCRIPTBOOK SC (SALE ED) $4.99 (IDW) Freaks was published by Dark Horse back in 2005 and was a great read back then. In 2008 they came out with this scriptbook for fans of the mini series. And once again they are making it available for new fans of the series. Niles and Ruth were great on this book and if you want good reading check this out for a little behind the scenes. (Mr. Green)
NOT MY BAG GN $12.99 (Image) This story caught my eye. It’s the tale of an artist taking a retail position and faces near death….the death of his soul. Art vs. Consumerism delivered in the form of department store folly. Sounds like it might be interesting. (Andrew)
PINOCCHIO VAMPIRE SLAYER GN VOL 04 WOOD & BLOOD PT 2 $10.95 (Slave Labor Graphics) Okay seriously, you have no soul if the title alone doesn’t make you want to read it. Plus, we get to see him tell lies to make his nose grow to stake vampires. COME ON, that is awesome! I just picked up the 3 volumes preceding this and I look forward to sitting down and reading it all together. (Mr. Green)
DAREDEVIL #19 $2.99 (Marvel) As always, I give my seal of approval on this series. Mark Waid and company continue to produce the best single-hero comic on the market today. It’s fun to question Matt Murdock’s sanity because you can’t help but root for the guy. Always at the top of my stack whenever it comes out. (Andrew)
SHADOW BLOOD & JUDGMENT TP (MR) $19.99 (Dynamic Forces) I love the Shadow and this was a great story from Chaykin back in the late 80’s. It really helped re-launch the character for younger readers like myself back then. The Shadow has been recently going through a bit of a resurgence lately with its new monthly book. See where that new found success was born from. (Mr. Green)
MIND THE GAP TP VOL 01 INTIMATE STRANGERS $9.99 (Image) So far, this has been my favourite new series of the year. Check out the first trade where you’re introduced to a girl in a coma who’s trying to solve the mystery of who put her in it. Suspense, Thrills, and a funny reference to Blind Melon’s No Rain. Great characters and well put together story telling. Just when you think this story will turn left, it turns right and changes the dynamic completely. Very exciting. If you’re not reading this book, I feel sorry for you. (Andrew)
DC UNIVERSE PRESENTS #13 $2.99 (DC C0mics) I thought when it was announced for the New 52, this title could only go one of two ways. Either it would be amazing or it would crash and burn. Thankfully it has been mostly great. This issue starts a new arc with recent additions to nDCU in Blue Devil & Black Lightning. Not sure how I feel about trying to name the team-up yet but that’s marketing for you. Regardless, cool mini arcs are being told that just don’t deserve a full comic run. I’d rather have this once in a while than a book that I like get cancelled. (Mr. Green)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you thought. Did we help you discover something new or did you really hate it? Either way at least you tried a new title out and experienced something new. And if you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
