This column each week, is to help you picking some books that we think look and sound interesting. Both Andrew and I are going to make some selections that we hope you try out and enjoy. Now this will probably lead to some name calling or fist fights at some point but this is not about which company is better or my general dislike for all things Marvel. No, we want to suggest some titles you may not be reading today but you might like if you did. By the way, there is no order to this list at all so deal with it.
New Books Released: 11/28/12
BEDLAM #2 $3.50 (Image) The first issue of this series written by Nick Spencer was a bit creepy. The classic tale of what happens to a guy after he goes crazy, becomes a super villain-type called Madder Red, kills a bunch of people, then gets better. This is the story of what comes after that. What will issue 2 have in store for us? (Andrew)
JEREMIAH OMNIBUS HC VOL 02 $24.99 (Dark Horse) A popular to 3 people TV series is the basis for this comic. The world went to shit when the United States is overcome by race hatred, and the ensuing civil war leaves only a few million survivors and a shattered society. Jeremiah and his friend Kurdy try and survive in a world that doesn’t want them to. The show was only marginally good but the comic series sounds 100 times better. (Mr. Green)
BEFORE WATCHMEN SILK SPECTRE #4 $3.99 (DC Comics) It’s been something like 2 months since issue #3 came out for this book and I have been waiting patiently….but I’m thankful that the wait is over. This is the only Before Watchmen title that has truly made me excited. I cannot wait to find out what goes down between Laurie and The Chairman. Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner have really delivered a great series and have proven that this event was worth doing if just for this book. (Andrew)
ARROW #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) What can I say? I like the series. Many fans of the character in comics are complaining about the show and how it has changed things. Really? This you get angry over but not the fact that the comic has sucked since the New 52 started. Come on, it’s different, get over it. After Jeff Lemire takes on the character I might change my tune but for right now, give this book a chance. It can’t be worse than what DC is publishing currently for the character. (Mr. Green)
FATALE #10 $3.50 (Image) If there’s one thing I love, it’s Ed Brubaker spinning a spooky bit of noir and Sean Phillips making it come to life with his pencils. Fatale continues to be one of the tightest new series on the market today. If you love crime stories or horror stories you need to be picking up this book. (Andrew)
JOE KUBERT PRESENTS #2 $4.99 (DC Comics) Volume 2 of the great Joe Kubert’s work being reprinted again, including a long lost reprint of one of his sci-fi stories. I can’t wait to pick up my copy and check it out. This is a great way for those not familiar with Joe’s work to be introduced to it. (Mr. Green)
ALL NEW X-MEN #2 $3.99 (Marvel) Based on the first issue alone, I am confident in saying that this is the second best Marvel Now title to date (next to Captain America). Bendis and Immonen have a cool concept on their hands and they set it up nicely last issue. Now it’s time to get into the fun stuff. The original X-Men are coming to our timeline. Welcome to the future X-Men….Hope you survive the experience. (Andrew)
MY LITTLE PONY FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC #1 $3.99 (IDW) Ponyville, home of Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie and Applejack is behaving a little strange lately. It’s up to our group of brave heroes to solve the problem before things get worse. This one goes to our Bronie fans out there. We usually don’t talk about books like this but I figured why not, since it’s the launch of new the series. (Mr. Green)
MORNING GLORIES #23 $2.99 (Image) The Second Nick Spencer Book on this list, Morning Glories is one of those books that I can’t not recommend. It’s a daring comic story with a cast of thousands and plots that boarder on the world of science fiction while remaining grounded in the real world. As usual, shit’s gonna hit the fan this issue. It always does. (Andrew)
NOWHERE MEN #1 $2.99 (Image) With tagline like “SCIENCE IS THE NEW ROCK ‘N’ ROLL” how could you not want to read it? What has happened that caused this statement and what will happen to make it an ironic sentiment in the future of the series? Intriguing premises are always worth checking out to see if they are truly good or not. (Mr. Green)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you thought. Did we help you discover something new or did you really hate it? Either way at least you tried a new title out and experienced something new.
And if you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
