Disney has released some early promo photos from the upcoming sequel to one of the biggest films of 2011, The Muppets. Yeah that’s right the sequel will be called The Muppets… Again! They are nothing if not original in the naming of this sequel. The new film is scheduled for a March 21st, 2014 release and stars Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Animal, Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey.
I have to say I love that the Muppets got higher billing than the actors. I know it’s a small thing but it’s stuff like this that makes me love the Muppets as a whole. While we all know that each one is performed with the help of a human companion who all get their recognition but to most people, it’s just Kermit, Fozzie, Miss Piggy etc. So to me, it’s only fair to bill them this way. The other thing I am happy about is that both Director James Bobin and Music Supervisor Bret McKenzie (Flight of the Concords) are back helping shape this one into reality.
What I find interesting is the similarities between the original first 2 Muppet films from the 80’s and these new ones concerns the plots. While not identical, they feel related. Like the The Great Muppet Caper before, this one involves an international crime caper with Ricky Gervais filling in for Charles Grodin. Like I said, related, not an exact copy. I guess they might as well go with what is a proven method. However if it’s anything like the 2011 film which is related to The Muppet Movie (1979) in themes it will most likely turn The Great Muppet Caper on it’s head and do a jig. Here’s the official plot from Disney.
Disney’s “The Muppets …Again!” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theatres in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.
Ah, you gotta love the identity confusion plot. I can’t wait to check it out next year.
