Loki had his army this past weekend.

Yesterday marked the end of another Comic Con International down in good ole San Diego and boy, is there lots to talk about…….and lots to get excited about as well. With announcements from both Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. on upcoming film projects, some footage released from the Veronica Mars Movie and Season 4 of the Walking Dead, and a rumor floating around about a certain career long Marvel Man heading to the Distinguished Competition, there seemed to be magic in the air. Now I, like most of us unlucky nerds, did not get a chance to attend the Mecca of  Geekdom but instead watched twitter updates, facebook statuses and various nerd news sites of the folks who were there. From all the news coming out of Hall H and the con floor, here’s the stuff that got me California Dreaming.

The Marvel Studios Panel

This year, it appears that all eyes were on Marvel for their annual presentation regarding their many film projects……and they took full advantage of this. Instead of just revealing some footage from Thor: The Dark World, they got a bit theatrical. It was awesome to first hear about (and later see for myself) Loki (Hiddleston in full costume) take over Hall H and call out the Avengers who were nowhere to be found. The chants of Loki (mostly from the female attendees) were deafening. Check out the clip for Loki’s grand performance.

But that was just the start as the casts of both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy were both on hand to answer a few questions and to show some footage. This is especially amazing for GotG as they’ve only been shooting for over a week or so. That was enough right there for Marvel fans to go home happy…..but it didn’t end there. Before the panel closed, Joss Whedon took the stage to reveal a logo on the big screen for the next Avengers film coming out in 2015: The Age of Ultron!

Now this reveal lead to a great deal of speculation and as it was the end of the panel, no immediate answers were given. Thankfully, Joss was available for interviews throughout the rest of the weekend and clarified a few things. First up, even though the title is the exact same as a recent mini series from Bendis and company, it is not an adaption. This film will give us an origin of Ultron story and unleash arguably the greatest Avengers villain on the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for the first time. Unfortunately, this origin will not include Hank Pym but instead branch out from the existing characters in the movie-verse. So probably Tony will somehow create Ultron….don’t know how I feel about that but I haven’t really been let down by the Marvel films yet. The one thing that Whedon shared that was good news for all Hawkeye fans out there is that his role will be substantially bigger in this one (and he won’t be mind controlled by any baddies).

Other Cool Marvel Stuff

In the comics realm, there was one new series announcement that caught my attention, mainly because it marked the return of everybody’s favorite mutant swashbuckling elf. That’s right, Nightcrawler will return to comics in Amazing X-Men, written by Jason Aaron with Art by Ed McGuinness. Take a look at the preview cover they released.

Amazing X-Men begins in November and Wolverine, Storm, Beast, Iceman, Northstar and Firestar round out the rest of the team.

In television news, Jeph Loeb and the cast and creators of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. treated a lucky panel audience to the pilot episode of the show where it was revealed that Colbie Smulders makes a cameo as Maria Hill (and supposedly it won’t be the only one this season). Not a huge deal but it’s nice to know that their maintaining a good grasp on connecting the show to the Marvel movie-verse (aside from already having Agent Coulson).

Walking Dead Season 4 Preview Footage

So this isn’t some breaking news or anything because we knew they would release a trailer at Comic Con but I have to say that Season 4 of The Walking Dead looks amazing. It almost looks like a completely different show, in a good way. If you haven’t seen Darryl, Rick and the gang getting their zombie on for the new season, check it out!

The Big DC Film Announcement

So yeah, I wasn’t super excited but I know a hell of a lotta other fanboys were jizzin’ their pants when they heard this news. At the very end of the Saturday Morning Warner Bros./Legendary Films Panel, Zack Snyder took the stage to annouce the next Superman Movie. Turns out it’s not just Supes that’s showing up for the next one as he had actor Harry Lennix take the stage and read the following passage:

I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in all your most private moments, I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you.

Fans of Batman in the crowd instantly recognized it as a line from The Dark Knight Returns mini series. Then the following logo hit the screen.

So it looks like we’ll have to wait for a Justice League Movie as Superman/Batman is scheduled for release in 2015.

JR Jr. going to DC?

So a very popular rumor going round the convention over the weekend was that John Romita Jr., a man associated to Marvel Comics for almost his entire career, might be looking for a change of scerery. Word on the street is that DC is trying to steal him away from the House of Ideas with a promise to both draw and write Superman. Is there truth to this rumor or is this a negotiation tactic with Marvel over a new contract? Time will tell. Either way, this little story was talked about more than most of the big reveals at the show.

Arrow Season 2 Footage gives us First Look at Black Canary in Action

So, being a big fan of Arrow, I obviously got excited when I heard they’re debuting Black Canary this season. But I’m still a little confused that it’s not Dinah “Laurel” Lance. Regardless, this video package shown at Comic Con got me more than a little bit excited. The Video begins with a recap of scenes from Season 1 but there’s new stuff at the 1:25 mark.

Veronica Mars Movie Sneak Peak

Finally, this video was something I wanted to add on here because not only am I excited to see this film when it comes out but also, judging by the preview here, the Veronica Mars movie appears to be shaping up nicely.

So that’s all from me regarding Comic Con ’13….until THIS FRIDAY! You’ll hear more from myself and Mr. Green on this week’s show as we give our SDCC’13 recap.

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
