Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #2 $2.99 (Archie Comics) – Okay. Holy shit. If you guys didn’t read Afterlife With Archie #1, you need to get on that immediately. Like if you need to kill a hitchhiker so you can harvest their organs to sell on the black market so you can afford to buy a copy on eBay, you should totally do that. Seriously, that first issue was the bees knees. No, I’m not joking. Fine. You don’t want to kill a hitchhiker? Whatever. Just buy this issue, imbibe the awesome that is sure to be found therein, and then tell me how you feel about it. This is a GREAT horror comic. It’s creepy and sad, and is of a quality I honestly did not expect from an Archie comic. Buy it. (Kris Johnson)
MAD PRESENTS SPY VS SPY FIGHT TO THE FINISH TP $9.99 (DC Comics) – They say it’s a fight to the finish but we know better. We know it will never end for these two. Known for their mad capped competition, the Spies are going balls deep into battle in 95 strips from Peter Kuper. These stories were “hand picked by the The Usual Gang of Idiots” so you know it’s guaranteed to deliver the regular top quality of idiotic genius! And it’s only 10 bucks so don’t worry about it breaking your bank. What? Me worry? (Andrew)
UNCANNY X-MEN #14 $3.99 (Marvel) – Battle of the Atom is FINALLY over and we can now get back to the business of telling stories I give a shit about. To that end, this month’s Bendis penned book will be focusing on one of my all-time favourite X-characters, the always profoundly interesting Magneto. Marvel is promising a big shift for the character, and when it comes to the Master of Magnetism that could really mean anything. Will we see him return to his villainous ways or possibly strike out on his own in an attempt to honour the memory of Professor X in a way Cyclops can never possibly hope to achieve? Any way you slice it, this should be a good one. (Kris Johnson)
MARADA SHE WOLF HC $24.99 (Titan) – If you read my review last week of this hardcover collection reprinting the stories of this classic sword and sorcery heroine, you already know how I enjoyed the hell out of this thing. A beautiful woman with a sword who can kick my ass and look good doing it? Yes sir, I do believe I’m sold. But the story goes much deeper than that and is a treat for any fantasy fan. For a deeper deconstruction, check out my review. (Andrew)
ANIMAL MAN #25 $2.99 (DC Comics) – This is it! Animal Man vs. Brother Blood with the fate of The Red hanging in the balance. If you’ve been following AM since the New 52 began, you know how massive an issue this is. If you’re a newbie? Welp… Might as well jump in with both feet! The art will see a shake-up this issue as Rafael Albuquerque joins the team and I’m excited to see just how he handles the weirdness this book is known for. (Kris Johnson)
LAST CHRISTMAS HC $24.99 (Image) – Christmas is only a few weeks away, so what better way to get into the festive spirit than reading a story where Santa turns his back on the holiday along with all of humanity. Brought to you by Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan (Hey, don’t they write Deadpool?) and drawn by Rick Remender (Hey doesn’t he write Captain America?) this reprint collecting all five issues of action comedy carnage where believing in Santa just might get you killed also comes with a bunch of special features including a foreword by Patton Oswalt (Hey, isn’t he one of them Comedians of Comedy?), commentary from the creative team and all of the original covers. The world is full of naughty boys and girls. Be one more by reveling in this irreverently funny comic. (Andrew)
AVENGERS #23 $3.99 (Marvel) – Infinity rolls on in this installment of the Avengers that sees the Universe’s Mightiest Heroes finally do battle with Thanos’ Black Order. We’ve seen The Mad Titan’s gaggle of evil douchenozzle’s swinging their cosmic wangs around long enough! Will we finally observe the epic ass beating we’ve been waiting to watch for months? At the very least I can pretty much guarantee Thor will be hitting someone with “Myeuh-muh” violently and repeatedly. He’s been doing that a bunch lately. (Kris Johnson)
A VOICE IN THE DARK #1 $3.99 (Image) – College can be tough……especially if you’re a person who has homicidal tendencies. For Zoey, it’s a chance to start over and leave the killing from her past behind…….recent past…..she killed someone 72 days ago. Will her new job as a late night campus radio show host be enough to distract her or will it just pass the need to kill onto her anonymous callers? Don’t know about you but the last time I listened to talk radio, I’m pretty sure I wanted to kill somebody by the time I was done. Dark urges and very bad things take center stage in this new comic from Larime Taylor. (Andrew)
BERSERK TP VOL 37 $14.99 (Dark Horse) – Possibly the most bad ass Manga of all time returns to store shelves with this latest volume. Berserk fans don’t need to be told about this book. They’ve been salivating for weeks. But you… Yeah, you! If you’ve yet to be indoctrinated into the Band of the Hawk there’s no time like the present. Hit your local shop, buy the first 36 volumes, drop this puppy on top, lock yourself in your room for a week and prepare to engage in one of the craziest comic reading experiences of your life. You know how militant fans of Breaking Bad and The Wire are about those shows? Same goes for fans of Berserk. Pick it up and find out why. (Kris Johnson)
TAKIO 2 GN HC $16.99 (Icon) – When the first Takio graphic novel came out a couple years back, I was blown away by how this ALL AGES book truly lives up to the moniker. In this follow up from Brian Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming collecting the first 4 issues of the quarterly series, the story continues for Taki and Olivia, a pair of sisters who’ve been granted super powers. Oh, did I mention they’re the only ones on the planet with powers? So what do you think would happen if these two decided to be heroes? Some crazy antics and thrilling adventures, that’s what! And all before bed time! If you want to read a comic with your kids that they’ll grasp instantly and you’ll be just as engaged, Takio is the book for you. KUNG FU TELEKINESIS! (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
