Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. Things are a little different once again this week as Comics will be hitting the shelves on a Tuesday (New Year’s Eve) and so this list is a day early. That’s the only thing out of the ordinary this week as Bizarre Comics’ Kris Johnson has returned to delight us with his picks for this week.
Here we go.
JUICE SQUEEZERS #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – This is my dark horse pick of the week, conveniently being brought to us by Dark Horse Comics. Synergy! In this new mini-series from David Lapham, a small town has been overrun by an army of oversized subterranean insects. The townspeople’s only hope? The only kids in town skinny enough to fit into cramped bug tunnels, a ragtag group known as The Juice Squeezers. In the solicits for this book the powers that be have chosen to invoke the memories of ET, The Goonies and Stand By Me, and if you’re gonna go ahead and do that you have gotta be ready to bring it harder than it has ever been brought before. Let’s reconvene on Wednesday to see if we should form a torch-wielding mob. (Kris Johnson)
FLASH #26 $2.99 (DC Comics) – New Creative Team! That usually means New, Creative Ideas! At least that what I hope it usually means. Christos Gage takes over the writing chores on the fastest comic alive! So what’s in store for Barry Allen? It appears he’s taking to the skies! No really, that’s what he’s doing. I know his powers don’t really work in the air. I’m guessing that’s gonna be the obstacle that the Flash must overcome to win the day in this stand alone story. Come on guys, you got that too, right? I will once again trust the Gage as he’s rarely lead me astray (there was that one time in Albuquerque….). (Andrew)
GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #10 $3.99 (Marvel) – Kevin Maguire is drawing an issue of Guardians of the Galaxy… From a Bendis script… That focuses on the dysfunctional tandem of Angela and Gamora as they do some intergalactic hunting. Really you should’ve just run out and bought the book after the first part there. (Kris Johnson)
LIL ERNIE #1 $3.99 (Dynamite) – The Li’l Event is upon us! Dynamite is taking some of their biggest and baddest characters and giving them the “Tiny Titans” treatment for one month. First up, it Evil Ernie. I guess in this comic he’s not so much evil as he is rambunctious and mischievous. Zombie fun abounds in this PG version of pure evil from the mind of Roger Langridge. Throw in a cover from Art Baltazar and you’re set for some excitement of the Li’l variety. Fun for the whole evil family! (Andrew)
BATMAN JUDGE DREDD TP $19.99 (DC Comics) – In the 90s Batman crossed over with pretty much everybody from the Predator to Grendel to Spawn to Wilford Brimley (That last one may not have happened) and everyone in between. Of all of those team ups and meetings some of the absolute coolest were the various books in which the Dark Knight Detective played a little who-can-scowl-hardest with the greatest lawman in the history of Megacity One (SPOILER: it was a tie). Now, with Dredd’s notoriety on the upswing we’re being gifted with a brand new TPB from DC Comics collecting every one of the Bats/Dredd meetings as well as a very special Lobo/Dredd in which the Main Man invites Dredd to tea and bakes some lovely Czarnian scones. DISCLAIMER: I have not actually read the Lobo/Dredd team up and am merely guessing as to what occurs based on a dream I had once. (Kris Johnson)
CELEBRATED SUMMER GN $16.99 (Fantagraphics) – Hey, remember when you were finishing up high school and you had the world before you? You felt like you could conquer it and show everybody you were worth a damn, right? Then that feeling made you scared shitless and you didn’t know what to do. Well, if you were like Mike and Wolf, the two main characters of this original graphic novel, you would’ve dropped acid and went on a road trip. Follow these two young men as they try and fail to escape their coming adulthood in this tragic road trip comic. Growing up is hard to do and these guys sure do suck at it. Make their failure your enjoyment by picking up Celebrated Summer. (Andrew)
TWILIGHT ZONE #1 $3.99 (Dynamite) – JMS continues churning out comics work at an absurd pace and this time he’s unleashing a new version of one of the greatest television shows in the history of all that is and all that will be in four-colour form. Will the Twilight Zone format translate to comics? Can JMS possibly hope to do the original series justice? Will the Francesco Francavilla covers be the only reason to buy this book? These are the questions that keep me up at night (for about a minute… Then I fall soundly asleep and dream about Lobo and Dredd enjoying some Orange Pekoe). (Kris Johnson)
THE STAR WARS #0 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – While I haven’t been blown away with the writing in The Star Wars (what do you expect? It’s based off Lucas’ first draft), I can honestly say it is one ofthe best looking books out there. The colours, the design, the backgrounds. All are really interesting and engaging. If only the plot was a bit more solid and not so convoluted…….you know, if it was more like A New Hope? Regardless, if you’re a fan of the Star Wars universe and you’re interested in the design of this book, you might want to check this out. And hey, it also includes the comic sequences that were used in the Dark Horse Pitch to get ol’ Neck Beard to sign off on this. I wonder if they tricked him by showing him a bunch of Jar Jars doing the can-can. (Andrew)
NEW AVENGERS #13 $3.99 (Marvel) – The best Avengers title on the market rolls on in the aftermath of Inhumanity! If you read this book you need no convincing to pick it up, but if you love the Avengers or just the Marvel Universe in general and don’t read this title I really don’t know what to do with you. This month, a new Illuminati will be gathered. Such a simple statement, but I don’t even know what that means in a book like this and I’ve reached the peak level of stoked simply by virtue of the possibilities. (Kris Johnson)
REVELATIONS #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Boom takes us to reprint city once again with this series from Paul Jenkins and Humberto Ramos. When a Cardinal at the Vatican is murdered, it’s up to one London Detective, Charlie Northern to find out “who dunnit?” But the Vatican is known for it’s conspiracy, corruption and secrets. Will there be too many obstacles for Northern to get past to find the truth? With some of the best art Ramos has ever produced, this book is a feast for the eyes while also being a feast for fans of both politcal/religious intrigue and conspiracy theory. Da Vinci Code This, Motherfucker! (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you think. We’ll be back again next week at the usual day and time with our regular brand of comic hijinx and buffoonery!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
