Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. This time, we’re doing things a bit differently as I’m flying solo for this one. As a special Christmas gift, I’ve given Kris Johnson, my usual partner in crime on this column, the week off. But he’ll need to be in an hour early next week and not a minute later. But as we prepare for the happiest time of year, there’s still a few comics you should check out at your local comic shop this Christmas Eve.
Here we go.
SAVIORS #1 $2.99 (Image) – Hey kids, do you like aliens? I’m talking about aliens in gerneral, not the film from the 80s. In this new tale from James Robinson and J Bone, there’s gonna be a butt load of them (obligatory anal probe joke – check!). One man stumbles upon an alien conspiracy to take over the world and it’s up to him and a small group that actually believe him to stop this impending doom. It doesn’t help these aliens are near indestructible and get all kill-crazy when they feel threatened. If shadowy alien cabals and the men that want to stop them is your thing, you might want to check this out. And even if it isn’t, what if this is a clever way for a person to get the word out that there may actually be a secret alien invasion going on right under our noises? Maybe this will have the answers we will soon need?……or maybe not. Either way, do you really want to take that chance?
CONAN TP VOL 14 THE DEATH $19.99 (Dark Horse) – Who’s the man that’s good with a sword and can fight off seafaring hordes? Conan! You damn right. Who’s the cat that won’t back down when there’s an imposter skulking around. Conan! Right on! He’s a complicated Cimmerian and no one understands him but his people. In this latest trade of the Barbarian’s adventures, Conan’s got his hands full as he’s gotta track down a douche that’s pretending to be him and killing people left and right. But what happens when this somehow links up with tragic incidents in his own past? My guess is awesome sword-wielding bad-assery!
ORIGIN II #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – So around 12 years ago, Marvel did the unthinkable when they revealed the origin of Wolverine – the true origin that starts from when he was kid – and they decided to go with the on-the-nose title of Origin. The mini series made waves at the time but ultimately ended up not playing too much into further cannon of Wolverine with the exception that a small group of people call him James instead of Logan now. That’s it. Flash forward to now where we’re getting another chapter in the secret life of James Howlett. So Jamie’s been living with wolves and that’s just the way he likes it. But just when he thought he was out, civilization pulls him back in! What that is exactly is something Sinister. Hopefully this won’t waste any of our time.
DECEIVERS #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Boom loves Steven Grant and Steven Grant loves Boom. After the success of 2 Guns (and eventually 3 Guns), Boom must think that Grant is their license to print money. That’s probably what their hoping with his new mini series, Deceivers, a crime-based underdog story about two conmen who are living it up off the spoils of European businessmen. But when an international theif has targeted their meal ticket, it’s up to them and a CIA agent working the case to stop him. It’s a classic case of “nobody picks on my little brother but me” and it just might be one of the more entertaining stories we’ll see in comic-land this upcoming year.
AVENGERS #24.NOW $4.99 (Marvel) – If you’ve been in a coma for the last 13 months and then recently picked up an issue of Avengers to find that these are not the Mightiest Heroes you remember, Marvel’s got you covered with Avengers 24.Now. Wanna know how the Avengers ended up going to infinity and beyond? Read up my friend and join the party. Hickman’s Avengers are explained…..as best they can be.
So there you go. Check these books out and let me what you think. We’ll be back again next week with our regular brand of comic hijinx and buffoonery!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
