So True Detective ended last Sunday. It was quite the finale and most of the major story elements were wrapped up in the episode. So of course people are already talking about True Detective Season 2.
According to series creator Nic Pizzolatto, Season 2 will be about “…hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system”. This could mean any number of things but does seem to point toward at least one female detective in next season’s storyline. Thus once again proving that TV is the place to be for strong female characters, not film.
This has been a long standing debate that won’t go away anytime soon. The sad reality is the studios are more likely to take chances on female lead characters for TV rather than in film. The only conclusion to be gained from this is studios think they will lose money as women don’t open big in the box office. I think the last few Sandra Bullock films or Bridesmaids would beg to differ, but I digress.
Looking toward the next season there will be more than enough rumours and speculation to fill the internet. Who are they going to cast? Are there going to be 2 female detectives? What is up with the occult transportation system angle? See, lots to speculate about.
Me, I have thoughts about all of it but some I’m not bothering with due to the insane unpredictability of the choices in story. However, I do have a list of casting choices. Here are some of the female actors that I think would make excellent choices for the new series. In no particular order: Katee Sackoff, Famke Janssen, Taraji P Henson, Cate Blanchett, Antje Traue, Eva Green, Ruth Wilson, Carla Gugino, Rosario Dawson and Anna Torv.
Looking at those names I’m hard pressed to find much issue with any of these ladies being involved with the show. If any of these fine actresses were to get the chance to sink their teeth into roles like the ones that we saw Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey play, it will be gold again.
Regardless, the wait will kill most of us. Until the show premieres and we get to see what Pizzolatto has planned we are going to writhe in agony over it. When it does drop next year it will be an insane hype machine. Possibly as an Emmy winning show with acting wins for its stars. That will be a lot of pressure on the new comers to the title roles.
All of which is unfair bu thats TV for you. All pressure no credit until you win something. I just hope the cast and show get the chance to WOW us like they did this year.
Stay tuned for more True Detective Season 2 next year around this time.
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
