April 19th marks the 3rd Saturday in April which means tomorrow is Record Store Day, an event celebrated at independent records and music stores throughout North America and other parts of the world. Started back in 2007 as a way to raise awareness of the independent record store, shops around the world host events, sell exclusive record offerings specific for the day and usually offer major sales. Basically, it’s the indie record store’s version of Free Comic Book Day but minus the free and better exclusives. This year there’s quite a few great records available for purchase. Not every store will have ’em but it’s still worth going out and supporting your local music shop. I myself found a few records on this year’s list that I think can be appreciated by the nerd in all of us. So break out your turntables and take a look.

Side By Side Series by ???

Format: 7″ Vinyl

Label: Rhino

Release type: RSD Exclusive Release

This one’s an interesting one. Released by Rhino as part of the Side By Side series, this album features 2 artists performing their version of the same song. But here’s the kicker: You don’t know which artist or which song until you play it. You could end up with something you really like or the biggest stinker your ears have ever heard. Feelin’ lucky, punk? A fun experiment for the true music nerd.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (Original Videogame Soundtrack) by Anamanaguchi

Format: 12″ Vinyl

Label: ABKCO

Release type: RSD Exclusive Release

One of the things I miss from 2010 was the feeling of Scott Pilgrim Mania that filled the air…..that is until the film was released in theatres against The Expedables and was crushed under it’s old, bloated, money-making carcass. One of the great products of this time was the Scott Pilgrim Video Game available on the Playstation Network. A fun, side-scrolling adventure that captured the magic of the comic to a tee in a 16bit style that made it all the more amazing. The music provided by NYC-based chiptune punk band Anamanaguchi was a delight while playing the game and now you can hear it all again without any pesky thumb cramps.

The Muppet Movie by Various Artists

Format: 12″ Vinyl

Label: Walt Disney Records

Release type: RSD Exclusive Release

Okay, so I’ve gone on record recently that while I love The Muppets, I haven’t been a huge fan of the songs from their various films. However, this release is a big deal as it hasn’t been available for purchase for over 35 years. There are a ton of Muppet fans who would love to have this keepsake in their record collection. For those that like to unwind kicking back with some Rainbow Connection blastin’ from their stereo speakers, I salute you.

Vitamin String Quartet Performs Weezer’s Pinkerton by Vitamin String Quartet

Format: 12″ Vinyl

Label: Vitamin String Quartet

Release type: RSD Exclusive Release

When I think of nerd rock bands of the 90s, Weezer is always at the top of the list. While I prefer the Blue Album, I know for a fact that many Weezer fans cite the Pinkerton album as the band’s crowning achievement. What better way to enjoy this album again like it was the first time by listening to this rendition by the Vitamin String Quartet. The VSQ has been doing their thing since 1998, taking some of the finest in pop rock music and re-imagining it in their classical delivery. This one also comes with a download card for those that want to keep their vinyl in pristine condition.
