Welcome to special edition of New Comics as I’m flying solo this week. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER #1 DIRECTORS CUT $4.99 (Marvel) – Hey Kids! You know that movie that’s hitting theatres this Friday that you’re all excited about? Did you know that it started out as a comic story? (It started out several comic stories but that’s besides the point.) As a special tie-in treat and a way to get you buy the trade, Marvel’s re-releasing the first issue of the now classic Winter Soldier story as a special “Director’s Cut“. What’s that mean? It’s got extras like the script for the issue and Ed Brubaker’s original proposal for the series. Basically, it’s a love letter to Ed Brubaker as Marvel wears their heart on their sleeve and pines for the writer who broke up with them. Either way, it’s worth a look for those that love Brubaker’s writing and/or want to get their feet wet on some Cap goodness that kind of inspired the new movie.
AQUAMAN AND THE OTHERS #1 $2.99 (DC Comics) – Oh, it’s those Others Guys again. When the new Aquaman series started with the New 52, it was one of my favourites. One of the reasons why that book was so good was due to The Others, a superteam nobody had heard of that Aquaman used to lead. Well now it looks as Arthur’s gotten the band back together once again. Somebody’s targeting this ragtag team of heroes and yes, it’s because of all their cool stuff. This unknown enemy wants those sweet Atlantian Artifacts that make The Others so damn cool. No way are The Others going to lose what makes them cool because then they’d be something other than The Others. Did that make any sense? Dan Jurgens, Lan Medina and Edgar Tadeo present this, that, and the other thing in this new series starring DC’s favourite fishman.
HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS GN $16.95 (Random House) – Max Brooks brings us a story from history that more people should know about: The Harlem Hellfighters. This all black regiment fought longer and harder than most in World War I. And surprise, surprise, even though they were one of the most successful regiments of the time, they were the least celebrated. Check out this story of valour and bravery on the battlefield illustrated by Canaan White and catch up on a piece of history that should be talked about.
DEAD LETTERS #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Man, I hate it when I wake up in a seedy motel room in hospital scrubs with amnesia and big goons breaking in the door planning to kill me. That never happen to you? I guess I’m the only one who can relate to this story first hand then. While you check out this new crime noir story of one man with no memories tries to stay one step ahead of a gang war, I’ll be in the corner re-evaluating my life.
DETECTIVE COMICS #30 $3.99 (DC Comics) – The Team of Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato begin their run on the adventures of the Caped Crusader with issue 30 and mystery is afoot. They say nothing gets you hooked like drugs and there’s a new one on the streets of Gotham. I know I don’t read a lot of Batman but I’m guessing Bats is gonna want to get to the bottom of who’s supplying this drug. Manapul and Buccellato broughts some interesting twists and turns during their run of Flash so I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with a much darker character. Regardless of story, we know that the pictures will be pretty.
SHOTGUN WEDDING #1 of 4 $3.99 (Image) – Here’s something we can all agree we don’t ever want to do again, am I right? Wait, I’m alone on this one again? What is it with you people? Anyways, turns out it’s not that kind of wedding. What happens when your fiance turns out to be a trained killer who once left another trained killer at the altar whose now vowed to take revenge? This is something I don’t think couples therapy can clear up. This is the first issue of a miniseries shipping weekly during the month of April. How will things end up for our killer and his new girl? Will they live happily ever after? Or will this story give Bridezilla a whole new meaning? Find out all this month.
So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
