Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy has a new theme song with Carry the Fire, the first single and title track off the upcoming album from rappers Rift and Savilion, presented by Hand’Solo Records.

In this day and age, it appears that post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction are at a height of popularity with The Walking Dead ruling cable television and films like The Hunger Games becoming box office blockbusters. This may be because in the current dog-eat-dog pace of society, we can find reflections of where the world may be heading. These stories are usually set in a cruel setting with jaded and cynical characters. Interesting place to visit but you wouldn’t want to live there.

In Carry the Fire, Rift examines what it would be like to be a survivor in a situation like this. His rhymes talk of living in extreme conditions and knowing what to do to survive. There are tons of references dropped in regards to sci-fi fiction including lines about the aforementioned Hunger Games as well as The Road. There are also references to Survivor Man and Grizzly Man. It’s obvious that Rift is ready for what comes his way in the struggle to stay alive. What’s interesting though is that although the setting of his song is dark, his message is a positive one. When describing his methods of survival, he repeatedly states that knowledge of one’s environment and keeping a cool head are the way to go. He also discusses “embracing the beast” within us and tapping into our animalistic side as not a negative loss of civility but instead a means to connect with our senses and be one with our surrounding environment. This is a refreshing take on the subject as most focus on a “survival of the fittest” mentality. Rift gives us a smart and soothing song about perseverance with an almost hypnotic delivery backed by a simple beat laid down by Savilion.

While this is my first time hearing anything from Rift, I have previously listened to Savilion’s work as part of the Swamp Thing crew. I enjoyed his work on the Creature Feature Album and was interested in hearing what his production on this song would sound like. Much like the laid back rhyming that Rift provides, Savilion takes a minimalist approach that’s fitting to the content of the song. A bit of beat boxing and percussion and that’s it. That’s all you really need when talking about living off the land and fending for yourself. It makes the message of the song all the more powerful.

The full Carry the Fire album comes out this June and will feature songs that touch on both Rift’s personal and professional passions with appearances by Wordburglar, Chokeules and more, but this track is now available for free over at Bandcamp. Download it, take a listen, and be prepared for whatever comes your way.
