Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
C.O.W.L. #1 $3.50 (Image) – Say hello to the Chicago Organized Workers League aka the world’s first super-hero labour union! What was once a mighty force for good has gone the way of many unions and become lazy and ineffectual. The citizenry are sick of their shit and no longer see a use for the once vaunted spandex-clad adventurers. In a last ditch effort to prove their value, The League decide to target one of their final remaining great villains. With an intriguing premise and absolutely stunning artwork I think this is one cowl you fine readers might just want to peek under. HAHAHAHA! Holy shit! Did you see what I did there? Man… I know. I’m ashamed of myself, too. (Kris Johnson)
MARVEL BOY TP $15.99 (Marvel) – Ah, the classic tale of alien crashes on planet, gets experimented on by crazy dude, then fights back and tells the World to Fuck Off (He literally spells out the words by way of explosions). One of the most overlooked works of Grant Morrison, this is a Marvel title starring one pissed off, young Kree soldier by the name of Nor-Varr fighting against the system. This was a Marvel Knights book back during a time when the Marvel Knights brand actually meant something. J.G. Jones provides the art back in a time when he actually finished what he started. If you like you’re aliens taking tantrums and kicking ass simultaneously, you will want to read this sometimes forgotten Marvel Classic. (Andrew)
BATMAN #31 $3.99 (DC Comics) – SAVAGE CITY continues right here and if the previous issue was any indication, this looks to be the best and most intriguing chapter of the entire Zero Year saga. The Riddler has succeeded in putting Gotham under his thumb, binding roadways with mutated plant life, manipulating the entire power grid, and terrifying citizenry with a daily round of deadly riddles. Now, in the city’s darkest hour, The Bat has finally returned (as is his way), and with the help of Jim Gordon, good ol’ Bruce (good young Bruce? ahh, forget it) hopes to turn things around… But first he’s gonna wrassle him a goddamn lion. Yep, that actually happens. (Kris Johnson)
ADVENTURES OF APOCALYPSE AL TP VOL 01 $9.99 (Image) – I’m a sucker for a detective story, especially when said detective is a woman who’s the only thing that stands between us and the end of the world. In this tale written by JMS and drawn by Sid Kotian, private investigator (and fiery redhead with a gun) Allison Carter has to deal with all creatures great and small, be it zombies, wizards, mad profits and even dead relative who can’t commit to being dead. You had me at “fiery redhead with a gun”. Everything else is just window dressing. Collecting the complete four issue story, this trade comes at the reasonable price of $10. $10? That’s practically giving it away. Gotta love that Image for bringing the top creators at bargain basement pricing. Saving the world in style never looked so good….or so affordable. (Andrew)
GUARDIANS OF GALAXY #15 $3.99 (Marvel) – Last issue, the Guardians were divided and conquered. Gamora is now in the clutches of the Badoon. Rocket is being dissected by the Kree. Groot, Drax, and Star-Lord are MIA. Lucky for the them, Captain FUCKING Marvel and Venom have their backs! That’s right, Carol Danvers joins the team and is sure to bring some of her patented, epic booty kicking along with her. But hey, as if that wasn’t enough, Nick Bradshaw continues to bring his mighty pencil to bear on Bendis’s fun scripts and you better not miss out! (Kris Johnson)
PEANUTS #18 $3.99 (Boom) – That Sally Brown is in a rough spot. She’s back to school for another year and she’s just found out that now that she’s starting a new grade, she has to go to a new classroom with a new set of teachers and everything. That can’t be right, can it? Sally’s not the type to take this lying down. She’s going to rage against the machine and get things back to the way they were last year. I feel your pain, Sally. Embrace that fear of change at an early age and it will never lead you astray. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be hiding from the world in the safe confines of my room. This and other fun stories from Joe Cool and the Gang coming your way in another reliable issue of Peanuts. (Don’t ever change Peanuts, do you hear me? Don’t EVER change.) (Andrew)
SOUTHERN BASTARDS #2 $3.50 (Image) – Jason Aaron and Jason Latour have done it again. The first issue of Southern Bastards was absolutely everything I hoped it would be and I can’t wait to dive back into the seedy, dirty, and downright awful lives of the denizens of Craw County, Alabama. Last time, we heard everybody speak in fear and/or reverence of a man by the name of “Coach”. This issue, we meet the lowlife himself. Peachy. If you’re not reading this comic, you have my permission to look in the mirror and slap yourself repeatedly in the face while saying, “Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!” a bunch of times. (Kris Johnson)
WINTER SOLDIER BITTER MARCH #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – Well, it wouldn’t be New Comics without Kris making at least one bold declaration about what you should do if “you’re not reading this comic”. Anyways….. In the penultimate issue of this bad-ass espionage tale, S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Ran Chen is still up shit creek with no back up as he’s trying to keep the one woman who has the key to the Cold War from falling into the wrong hands……those wrong hands being Hydra and The Winter Soldier. Hydra’s always a pain in the ass but when you add in the Red Room’s baddest agent back when he was still programed for ultimate Yankee-killing action (kind of), things just go from bad to worse. It’s a three way battle that will have some lasting repercussions. Good Luck Ran, you’re gonna need it. (Andrew)
THANOS ANNUAL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – The Infinity Guantlet team of Jim Starlin and Ron Lim reunite to tell a tale that pits the Mad Titan against Mephisto, The Avengers, and a future incarnation of himself! Ga-ga-ga-goyng! Big things. Big things. Marvel’s stated this book will serve as a primer for what’s to come in the upcoming THANOS: THE INFINITY REVELATION graphic novel, which is pretty sweet unto itself. But for the Thanos fans out there, it should have the added value of helping wash the foul taste of Thanos Rising out of your mouths. You’ll thank me later.
STAR WARS REBEL HEIST #2 $3.50 (Dark Horse) – Speaking of Super-spy bad-assery (I just mentioned some in the blurb above on The Winter Soldier), how about a princess going undercover in a galaxy far, far away? Leia’s out in the field doing what she can to help the rebels by obtaining a vital code from an Imperial source and is using all the assets at her disposal: her brains, some cool toys, a few disguises and even her womanly wiles. It’s hard enough to get the job done in this lawless land outside the Empire’s rule but when you add in a comrade in arms that will only see you as a liability, the mission is even harder. Didn’t this guy see the movies? You don’t gotta worry about Leia. Worry about yourself, son. She’s got this. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
