Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #7 $3.99 (Archie) – FINALLY! Afterlife with Archie is back at last, and in all seriousness, it’s been too damn long. The Riverdale gang are on the run and have left their beloved hometown. As they attempt to celebrate Thanksgiving with whatever meager feast this post-apocalyptic world can offer, tragedy strikes once more and another of their number is knocked off the board. BETTY RIP begins right here so, uh, I think they may have shown their hand with that one. (Kris Johnson)
SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS DELUXE ED HC $29.99 (DC Comics) – This is THE Superman story. If you read my Greatest Superman Stories column back in 2013 (right around the time that that Meh of Steel film came out) you already know that I hold this story in high regard. This is probably one of the best comic tales told by Jeph Loeb (hey, doesn’t he make television for Marvel now?) and Tim Sale (You remember him, right? Yeah, the Heroes guy), a duo that took “retro” comics and made them cool. This telling of Superman’s origin stands the test of time like no other (sorry John Byrne, your Man of Steel mini is nothing compared to this) and is way more inspiring than a dude rocking jeans and a blanky-cape (sorry Grant Morrison but that was still a bad idea). If you’ve got a Super-fan to shop for this holiday season, get ’em this beautiful new Deluxe hardcover. (Andrew)
THOR #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – The new Thor finds herself cornered by Frost Giants sans the mighty mallet known as Mjolnir! Will the goddess of thunder prove her mettle or will her reign as the newest flaxen-haired Asgardian be a short one? Also, unworthy Thor promises to make an appearance and hopefully he’ll be showing off his fancy new stump. (Kris Johnson)
BITCH PLANET #1 $3.50 (Image) – It’s not just a catchy title. After years of waiting, someone is finally taking the “women in prison” genre that we all love and is adding in the element of sci-fi. Two great tastes that taste great together! Being touted as “Margaret Atwood meets Inglorious Bastards”, this title equals more than just it’s exploitation parts. It’s got Kelly Sue Deconnick at the helm and Valentine De Landro riding shot gun on art duties. If you’re ready for action and drama given to you straight, no chaser, this book is for you. (Andrew)
ETERNAL #1 $3.99 (Boom) – This new sci-fi series from BOOM! Studios presents a future in which rampant human cloning has caused death to become a thing of the past. Life and New Life, Clones and Pures; It’s a brave new world with new rules and new dangers. What does that earth look like? What does that life look like? Here’s hoping we don’t end up being a race of those crap clones from Multiplicity or like a bunch of genetic DeVitos or something. That’d kinda blow. (Kris Johnson)
PUNISHER #13 $3.99 (Marvel) – Been reading Punisher lately? Those new Howling Commandos are dicks, am I right? (Unless you’re reading Black Widow, then I guess they’re okay.) They’ve been harshing Frank Castles’ buzz. They’ve been taking things way too far lately. Los Angeles is going to shit and their busy getting in the Punisher’s face? Talk about mixed up priorities. What’s our boy with the skull on his chest gonna do when they take things too far? They don’t want to know…..but we sure as hell do. (Andrew)
SOUTHERN BASTARDS #6 $3.50 (Image) – The Secret Origin of Coach Boss will be revealed. Yes, Jason Aaron plans to peel back the festering, diseased layers of the life of the biggest bastard in a county full of bastards and you can get a front row ticket by heading to your local comic shop this Wednesday and throwing down $3.50. Yes, indeeeeed, the grimiest, most-smash mouth comic on the shelves is back and that, my friends, is nothing but a good thing. (Kris Johnson)
DITKO’S SHORTS HC $24.99 (IDW) – Many comic fans know Steve Ditko best for his hand in creating one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel Universe. That’s right, he created Doctor Strange…..oh and that Spider-Man guy as well. But in this collection, we see the many short comic stories that he’s done over the years, most only 1 to 3 pages long. Ranging in genre from horror, sci-fi and even humour, there’s a bunch of fulfilling comic yarns from one of the masters of the Silver age. Check it out and be glad you did. (Andrew)
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #11 $3.99 (Marvel) – Spider-Verse Part 3! This series has been a master class in how to do big time event comics the right way. Now I know Dan Slott has his detractors, but for my money, this book exemplifies why I fell in love with comics in the first place. It’s big time action, big time characters, and without a doubt big time fun all perfectly illustrated by one of the greatest artists working in the industry today: Olivier Coipel. Even if you’re late, the party’s still rocking so join in this week! (Kris Johnson)
HARLEY QUINN HOLIDAY SPECIAL #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Whether it’s her classic, pre-New 52 look or this Party Girl on Acid style she’s rockin’ these days, it’s hard not to enjoy the antics of one Harley Quinn. And now she’s gettin’ all festive! Amanda Connor and Jimmy Palmiotti bring you a couple of new, cripplingly funny tales of Harley and her destructive ways. There’s even a war of department store Santas! Nothing’s more festive than mass carnage and destruction….at least when Harley’s involved. If you’re looking for that book to get you the holiday mood, look no further. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
