Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. I’m flying solo this week so there’s less picks but still the same amount of heart. It’s all about the heart, am I right?
Here we go.
MS MARVEL #10 $2.99 (Marvel) – The story of a girl and her dog continues! Kamala is closing in on that pesky Inventor and will team with some “unlikely heroes” to stop him. Every time a new issue of this title comes out, it’s like a minature holiday all unto itself. This is also the first book to ever….EVER make me give a shit about Lockjaw, so good on ya G. Willow Wilson.
SOLITARY #1 $3.99 (Devil’s Due) – Here he stands….a solitary man. This new book from Devil’s Due looks interesting as it takes the superhero-in-prison tale and tweaks it. Wrongly accused, Tim is awaiting execution on death row. The kicker is, this former hero might’ve just found out he’s immortal. Kind of makes the hole execution thing a bit more difficult. The Green Mile ain’t got nothing on this new comic!
GI JOE #4 $3.99 (IDW) – The Fall of G.I.Joe storyline is still going and Scarlett is working overtime to bring her team out on top. She may’ve gone a little too far though, as her actions are forcing other military groups into action. That “Fall” that the title alludes to might not be that far off. But like the Macho Man used to always say, “When you fall down, get back up, take the standing eight count and fight again and you’re a Macho Maniac! Oh Yeah! Dig It!“……I mean YO JOE!
SAGA TP VOL 04 $14.99 (Image) – Okay, I’m still a little behind on my Saga but since the latest trade comes out this week, it has to be mentioned. Normally, Kris would sing his praises about the book and then scold the folks out there who’ve never read it with some snide remark about how they must do something terrible to no be smart enough to pick up this title. But since he’s not here, it falls to me. This is tough as he gets pretty dark here and I feel that I’ve always been a beacon of light. Okay, here goes…..if you’re not reading Saga, you probably secretly have a tramp stamp of Donald Trump….see, this is way harder than it looks. I applaud you, Kris Johnson, for being able to come with truly heinous things to accuse people of for not reading Saga.
BLACK WIDOW #13 $3.99 (Marvel) – The Widow is alone. It’s just her against the world as her country has turned its back on her and she’s been left out in the cold. Damn you CNN! Who can she turn to? With nobody else to back her up, will she give into the dark side of her soul, the one always bubbling under the surface? No matter what she does, she’ll kick ass doing it as this is the best Black Widow series to date. Big congrats to the creative team, especially Phil Noto who’s never stayed on a book this long before. Awesome work.
WINTERWORLD TP VOL 01 LA NINA $9.99 (IDW) – The return of Chuck Dixon’s classic tale about the world becoming a popsicle and the survivors trying to find warmth came back earlier this year and has been as good as ever. Artist Butch Guice is doing some of his best work and series stars Scully and Wynn feel like old friends returned after a long time on the tundra. If you like your post-apocalyptic tales on the chilly side, you will enjoy this sprawling, nomadic tale of a man, a girl and a badger. I get chills just thinking about it. (This poorly timed “winter” pun is brought to you by the memory of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s performance in Batman and Robin. Remember that? Chill Out.)
RUMBLE #1 $3.50 (Image) – Rumble young man, Rumble! So who’s starting this fight? Why a scarecrow god from another dimension, of course! He’s pissed and he’s taking it out on the next person he sees, be it an enemy or just some schmuck. If you want to see a book that involves undead kittins, dive bars, skinheads and mummies, then you’ve come to the right place. This book mixes humour, adventure and the fucked up. What more could you ask for?
So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
