Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
AVENGERS AND X-MEN AXIS #9 $4.99 (Marvel) – I know, I know… I’m tired of event comics, too, guys, but this comic features art by Jim Cheung. JIM CHEUNG! I love that guy, and I know you do too. So let’s see what cash-grabby, rendered-moot-by-retcons-in-3-years-or-less, “universe-shattering” deaths and characters realignments Marvel will have him rendering this Christmas! Don’t worry, I’ll save you a copy, friend. (Kris Johnson)
THEY’RE NOT LIKE US #1 $2.99 (Image) – It’s another ALL NEW Image series! I remember when Image was all about just that – a flashy comic company that was style over substance. These days, they’re the industry leader for interesting and thought-provoking comics. Will They’re Not Like Us be the next in a long line of kick-ass titles? The story appears to focus on youth and a change that’s coming. Can the children really be our future? If we teach them well, can they actually lead the way? Maybe this new comic has the answer. (Andrew)
ROBIN RISES ALPHA #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – This week sees the end of the Robin Rises storyline and the return of the legendary Andy Kubert to a character that he helped co-create. Over the past several months, Brucie has been on a tear, facing down everyone from Glorious Godfrey to the Justice League to Darkseid himself all in the name of recovering the body of his only son. Now that he’s come to his journey’s end, what is it that he’s accomplished? What has he won? And what was it that he brought back from Apokolips? (Kris Johnson)
GRAVEYARD SHIFT #1 $3.50 (Image) – Hey look, another Image #1! This one’s got a little bit of love, a little bit of death and a few of them pesky vampires. This book is being sold as “Fright Night meets Castle”. Not a bad combo. Can a homicide detective and his girlfriend stay one step ahead of a group of bloodsuckers that are gunning for them? Lets hope they can as they try to make like McGruff the Crime Dog and take the BITE out of CRIME. (Andrew)
GARBAGE PAIL KIDS COMIC BOOK PUKETACULAR #1 $3.99 (IDW) – If you were an 80s kid then you probably have fond memories of the ol’ Garbage Pail Kids. And if you’re not an 80s kid? Well, then this comic is looking to introduce you to some of the grossest, most ridiculous satire the decade of Reagan and ‘roided out action heroes had to offer. IDW looks to have put together something truly special and inspired by bringing Peter Bagge of HATE and NEAT STUFF fame on board, potentially raising the 30-year-old property up beyond its lowest common denominator roots. (Kris Johnson)
SHE-HULK #11 $2.99 (Marvel) – Okay, so I’ve been praising this book up since the first issue and I really want you all to have the chance to experience it before it’s gone. In this installment, Jennifer finally gets around to solving the mystery of “The Blue File”, a case that’s been lingering in the background for far too long. Oh, and there’s a throwdown to be had when Shulky faces off with Titania. That’s bound to be asses in seats, am I right? Come for the fight. Stay for the awesome storytelling…..then tell your friends about it and get them to come on out as well……and then have them tell their friends……and….you get the picture. (Andrew)
DAREDEVIL #11 $3.99 (Marvel) – Bring the Devil home for the holidays! The most consistently great comic produced by the House of Ideas keeps on keeping on with issue #11. Mark Waid and Chris Samnee are a team for the ages and if you need a reminder of what great superhero comics are all about, simply pick up this issue and prepare yourself for a well-crafted, fun-as-all-hell time. (Kris Johnson)
SECRET AVENGERS #11 $3.99 (Marvel) – Kris is right. Daredevil is one classy book. And guess what? So is Secret Avengers! This is without a doubt the most imaginative team book on the stands right now. It’s like Ales Kot went on an opium-induced spirit walk and when he returned, he had the keys to write a story where bombs are sentient, Coulson is all about fighting Hawkeye and the S.H.I.E.L.D. Hellicarrier is the most dangerous place on Earth. And whoda thunk that M.O.D.O.K. could actually be a credible antagonist? Good on you Kot. And good on Michael Walsh for providing such pretty pictures. (Andrew)
IMAGE FIRSTS: SOUTHERN BASTARDS #1 $1.00 (Image) – I love Southern Bastards. It’s a wonderfully mean little piece of work and I think everyone should be reading it. Image, it seems, wholeheartedly agrees and have put out this convenient dollar edition of the 1st issue to entice late-comers into jumping on board. If you haven’t been reading this book, don’t miss the boat the second time around. Some shitty, baseball bat wielding, football jersey wearing, ill-bred, ill-tempered rednecks await your company… and they’d like to share some ribs. Broken ones… probably yours. (Kris Johnson)
X FILES X-MAS SPECIAL $7.99 (IDW) – Just in time for the holidays comes the most unlikely of Christmas Comics! And I say just in time, I mean “Could you have possibly waited any longer to bring this out? Come on!” It’s a special time as Skinner brings all his agents together for the first time for a Merry X-Mas Superfest. But this being an X Files story, things take a turn for the weird as an unexpected guest comes down the chimney. Ho Oh No! (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
