Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am  joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.

Here we go.

STK660507MILES MORALES ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #9 $3.99 (Marvel) – Despite what some people might have you believe, we are living in a Wallcrawler Golden Age, and the Ultimate Spidey comic is a massive part of that. Who would have ever believed that a brand new character could so thoroughly replace a deceased Peter Parker that even when given the option to have ol’ Petey back in the blue and red, the masses resoundingly chose Miles? Thus is the power of Mr. Morales and a testament to the wonderful character work Bendis does with him and his supporting cast each and every month. This issue, a new chapter begins as Miles joins SHIELD! Weird. (Kris Johnson)

VEIL HC $19.99 (Dark Horse) – Would you look at that. If it isn’t Veil, the comic title I picked for best miniseries of 2014! It’s back and it’s a hard cover and it won’t be denied! Now’s your chance to check out this freaky little horror book in case you missed it the first go round. When a woman wakes up in an abandoned subway tunnel, naked with no memory and surrounded by rats, she has to figure out things quick. Is she an object of desire or a force to be reckoned with? And hey, it’s written by Greg Rucka, the guy I picked for comic writer of 2014. Go fig! (Andrew)

STAR WARS #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – My pick for best writer of 2014 teams up with one of the all-time great artists to present Marvel’s newest vision of a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away! Picking up right where A New Hope left off, Jason Aaron and John Cassaday thrust Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, Chewie and the rest into another adventure of cosmic proportions. And hey, for the folks who give a shit about this kind of thing, it’s ALL CANON. So, yeah, enjoy that. (Kris Johnson)

STK660560SHIELD #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – Mark Waid continues his merging of universes as he brings the folks from Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the heroes of the 616 world of comics together. This time, he’s got Humberto Ramos on the art duties and what a duty it is as this issue has a MARVELOUS guest star. Gemma has to go back to high school. A high school in Jersey City. Hey, maybe she’ll run into Ms. Marvel……oh wait, now I see what’s going on here. (Andrew)

MORTAL KOMBAT X #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) – New Mortal Kombat game means a new Mortal Kombat comics. Now this franchise hasn’t really had much luck being adapted into these here graphic flip books… or movies… or cartoons… or pretty much anything that doesn’t star Black Dynamite. But that’s no reason to think THIS attempt will be no good! In fact, I’d say all of that stuff should give us hope ‘cause the franchise has gotta be due in the quality spin-off department, right? … Right? (Kris Johnson)

JUPITERS LEGACY #5 $4.99 (Image) – There is a 5th issue! It’s real! I was beginning to think we all collectively dreamed this title up, but no, it’s back! Mark Millar and Frank Quietly bring us another chapter in the messed up livestyles of the super and famous. Hey, you know what this story needs? A hero hunter. Oh look, you got one. Enter Barnabas Wolfe, a man with the instincts of Sherlock Holmes and the fashion sense of Count Dracula. This guy’s gonna start some shit, you better believe it. (Andrew)

STK659438CONAN RED SONJA #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Gail Simone. Jim Zub. The Cimmerian Barbarian. The She-Devil with a Sword. Four great tastes that taste great together!…errr, read together… or whatever. In a story that spans multiple time periods, Sonja and Conan lock horns with another of those dastardly sorcerers that the Hyborian Age is just straight up lousy with. Seriously, it’s like there’s three employment streams in the Conan universe and all of bronze age guidance counsellors checked off “magic guy” for all of the douches that strolled through on career day. (Kris Johnson)

GRAYSON #6 $2.99 (DC Comics) – It’s time for another hero vs. hero battle! Alright! Who’s the former boy wonder/former Nightwing going up against this time? Why it’s Batman…..oh no, that’s not right. He’s fighting Midnighter. Sorry, I always get those two mixed up. Should be a pretty good fight, though. (Andrew)

AVENGERS #40 $4.99 (Marvel) – Thanos is back and he may be the universe’s only hope. Wait? What? Oh yeah, and in 4 MONTHS time runs out (*cough*SECRETWARS*cough*). Yes, we are indeed heading into another event when the last event has barely ended (or straight up hasn’t ended at all if you’re Spider-Man) but I’m really digging what Hickman has been doing in the Avengers books lately and am an unapologetic mark for the Mad Titan so I’m all in on this. (Kris Johnson)

STK657354BOOM BOX 2014 MIX TAPE #1 $9.99 (Boom) – Ah, the mix tape. How I remember it well. Taking a bunch of songs that don’t seem to have anything to do with eachother and throwing ’em all on one handy, dandy cassette tape. But this time, it’s not an actual cassette. It’s a comic. And instead of a bunch of songs you’ve selected to show this girl how you really feel about her, it’s a bunch of comics from some cool creators. Boom diehards will be happy to know that there’s a new Lumberjanes story in the mix. Everyone who likes comics will be happy to pick this up ’cause it’s a whole lotta tales to digest. Pick it up for variety, as variety is the spice of life. (Andrew)

So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
