Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
BITCH PLANET #2 $3.50 (Image) – Everybody is talkin’ ‘bout Bitch Planet! It’s the biggest, baddest, bitchiest, most exploitation-ey book on the shelves and you’d be doing yourself a disservice by overlooking it. Kelly Sue Deconnick is crafting what she considers to be her magnum opus and it shows on each and every page. Need more? Valentine DeLandro is supplying the art and maaaan, that dude is criminally underrated. Pick it up or you might just get shanked with a really sharp piece of soap… and maybe you’d deserve it, y’know? (Kris Johnson)
SECRET AVENGERS #12 $3.99 (Marvel) – This book has done the unthinkable. Not only has it made me care about M.O.D.O.K., the goofiest machine designed only for killing, it’s also made me root for him too! He wants to be a true, blue Secret Avenger – A genuine good guy – and save the day. And he’s doing it for love. Who woulda thunk something designed only for killing (with the hugest head imaginable) would even know what love is. Then there’s Black Widow and Lady Bullseye who’re feeling anything but love. They gotta work together to get free from wherever the hell they are now. I’m sure everything will be fine. Wait, this is in print, right? I was using my sarcasm voice just now. (Andrew)
QUANTUM & WOODY MUST DIE #1 $3.99 (Valiant) – Quantum and Woody suddenly find themselves in the cross-hairs of every major bad guy this side of Saturn and James Asmus and Steve Lieber are here to show us every glorious second of the ensuing mayhem. Will these bumbling boobs survive the assault? Probably….and it’ll be helluva lot of fun watching them do it. Plus there’ll be a goat. That’ll be good. (Kris Johnson)
THE DYING AND THE DEAD #1 $4.50 (Image) – In a book that’s being touted as “Indiana Jones for Old People,” we’re bound to see a few relics of various kinds. What do a murder at a wedding, a man who’s given the chance to save his dying wife and an ancient tribe appearing anew in this current time have in common? They’re all in this book! This leads to a group of old fogies getting the band back together to solve the mystery. It’s a series written by Jonathan Hickman so you know that the weird shit is gonna pop up quickly. (Andrew)
UNCANNY AVENGERS #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Remender and Acuna return with a brand-new Uncanny Avengers series! Yeah, ANOTHER ONE! After the disappointment that was Axis, here’s hoping this “clean” slate breathes new life back into the franchise. With an eclectic team featuring Vision, Sabretooth and freakin’ Doctor Voodoo, all the ingredients are in place for something quite weird and possibly stupendous. Let’s hope we don’t get a shit soufflé. (Kris Johnson)
CASANOVA ACEDIA #1 $3.99 (Image) – Imagine your a guy who can’t remember anything from your past and you’re dropped in the middle of La La Land. What do you do? Apparently you try and solve a mystery. That’s what all the kids are doing these days (or at least that’s what all the Image Number Ones are doing this week). Gotta love a mystery, especially when it involves a secretive criminal benefactor and strange occult forces from the future. Matt Fraction and Fabio Moon handle the main event while the Pulitzer Prize winning Michael Chabon brings us a back up story drawn by Gabriel Ba. Not a bad way to start off a series. Not too shabby at all. (Andrew)
KING THE PHANTOM #1 $3.99 (Dynamite) – Remember that time that Hollywood thought it’d be an awesome idea to get the tall dude from Biff’s gang to play a guy who runs around the jungle in a giant purple sock, delivering really stilted dialogue while knocking out bad guys with some of the least convincing punches ever committed to film? No? Good. ‘Cause this comic is nothing like that. Prepare for some kick-ass pulp action starring one of the original masked heroes this Wednesday! (Kris Johnson)
STREET ANGEL HC $19.95 (Adhouse Books) – Jesse is a homeless, orphan teen who don’t take no shit from anybody! It doesn’t matter if you’re a cop, ninja gangbanger, mad scientist, time-traveling pirate, ancient god, or an evil version of Jesse from the future. You’re all going down to a girl who knows her kung fu and her skateboarding. Big, fun, crazy action with a few laughs thrown in, this is a book that will keep you on your toes. (Andrew)
THOR #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – Thor Vs Thor! The Odinson has returned and he’s none too happy to find another wielding his big, fancy meat tenderizer. He may be short one arm and the mystical might of Mjolnir, but he’s still freakin’ Thor. Can the all-new, all-female, all-inexperienced Thor hope to best a warrior bred by centuries of combat? Whatever the outcome, I’m sure it will be most excellent as Aaron and Dauterman have done awesome work on this latest series. (Kris Johnson)
FIND #1 ONE SHOT $3.99 (ComixTribe) – Take one coming of age story, a young and impressionable hero, an otherworldly object and a night that will have life altering repercussions and put them in a bowl. Mix thoroughly until you have an interesting comic plot (or at least until it thickens) and serve. Makes a great meal for folks looking for some fun adventure. And it’s low on carbs. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
