Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
DESCENDER #1 $2.99 (Image) – Descender is the tale of a young robot on the run from galactic bounty hunters, the law, and other forces that wish him only death in a universe where androids have been outlawed. Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen join together their mighty talents for the first time on this title and if the previews are any indication, it looks to be the start of a truly sweeping adventure unlike any other on the comic shelves. Of all the new titles this week, Descender looks like the surest bet to tug on your heart strings. (Kris Johnson)
GUARDIANS TEAM-UP #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – So what do you do when a team becomes super popular due to a break out, super successful, blockbuster movie? You give another comic title, I guess. TWO, TWO comic titles, HA, HA, HA! (All respects to the Count). So here comes Guardians Team-Up featuring stories so humongous, it takes not just the Guardians, but the Guardians plus one….or two…..or three….or more! In this first issue they team up with the Avengers. Heaven help us when TWO – Two super-teams must unite! Let’s hope they don’t try to get cute with their name and call themselves the Avenging Guardians or the Guarding Avengers of the Galaxy or some other crap like that. That would be just too much. (Andrew)
NEVERBOY #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – A former imaginary friend discovers he can stay in our physical reality as long as he remains stoned. When the drugs fade, his grip on our world fades and the pull from his own begins to grow. A psychedelic journey into the nature of existence awaits. I’ll be taking the trip come Wednesday. Let’s venture down the rabbit hole together. (Kris Johnson)
BIG MAN PLANS #1 $3.50 (Image) – There are three selling factors for me when it comes to this book. First would have to be the creative team. You’ve got Eric Powell, he of The Goon, working on a brand new title for Image. How ’bout that. It’s good to see Powell doing new stuff. Second, you’ve got a story of murder and mystery that is promised to be balls to the wall as it’s a tale of characters who don’t care what they do to exact revenge. Third would be the cover. Would you wanna mess with this little man? I didn’t think so. (Andrew)
SPIDER-WOMAN #5 $3.99 (Marvel) – Jessica Drew gets some new threads and a brand new direction in the fallout from Spider-Verse. Will this be an exciting new chapter in the life of one of Marvel’s most popular heroines, like Deconnick’s take on Captain Marvel, or simply a footnote best ignored like that time Wonder Woman decided to ditch being awesome for a super-lame jumpsuit? Time will tell. (Kris Johnson)
SUPER VILLAINS UNITE TP COMPLETE SUPER VILLAIN TEAM UP $34.99 (Marvel) – Ah, Super Villain Team Up is back in print. This had some of my favourite stories featuring Dr. Doom and Namor teaming up. It was great. Doom’s wife kicks him out, so he goes to live with Namor, who was kicked out by his wife earlier. Doom’s a neat freak and Namor’s a slob. They bicker and fight because they’re so different. They also play a lot of cards and, oh yeah, they TRY TO KILL THE FANTACTIC FOUR AND THE AVENGERS! Written and drawn by a bunch of great creators in the classic Marvel fashion (Neil Simon not included). (Andrew)
BLACK SCIENCE #12 $3.50 (Image) – This goes out to all of you Black Science virgins out there: By now you’ve heard about Black Science, you’ve read about Black Science, and you’ve probably thought about buying an issue of Black Science. Maybe you figured you were too far behind to jump in. Maybe you thought it’d be too tough to catch up. Luckily for you, Image has released a couple of collected editions of the previous arcs, while Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera have crafted a perfect jumping-on point with this brand new issue. Pick up all of the above. Devour every bit. Take a day or two to think about the ideas and awesomeness presented. And when it’s all said and done, be glad you finally took a chance on Black Science. You’re welcome. (Kris Johnson)
PALMIOTTI & BRADY’s BIG CON JOB #1 $3.99 (Boom) – While robbery at a Comic Convention is nothing new (“The price is how much?”), here’s a new spin on a heist story that we can all get behind. Jimmy Palmiotti teams up with Matt Brady and Domo Stanton to bring you a comic featuring a bunch of washed-up has-beens who’ve been doing the con circuit for far too long. Their lines are getting shorter and the green isn’t as fruitful as it once was. So they team up to pull off the caper of the century by stealing from the biggest convention around. Hailed as “Galaxy Quest meets Ocean’s Eleven”, this comic tale of crime and fandom is bound to be a fun romp that pokes fun at the shows that we all spend far too much money at. (Andrew)
PRINCESS LEIA #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Mark Waid has been doing absolutely phenomenal work since returning to Marvel. With the unbelievably high quality of the House of Ideas’ Star Wars books thus far, I’m willing to put a whole 20 spot on this book starring everyone’s favourite Imperial Senator (Sorry, Horox Ryyder) continuing the trend. That’s right! 20 beans! 20 actual beans… probably of the black variety. I’m THAT confidant! I love black beans! (Kris Johnson)
ALL NEW HAWKEYE #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Who says you have to wait for the old Hawkeye series to end before the new one can begin? All New Hawkeye hits the stands this week with a tale involving Clint’s past. And like most of Clint’s past, it’s come back to rear its ugly face in the present. But don’t worry, if memory serves he’s become an expert at cleaning up the mess his past mistakes have caused…….that is with the help of Kate Bishop, his trusted ward (Don’t call her that. She hates being called that). What wild, new adventures will writer Jeff Lemire (making his Marvel debut) and artist Ramon Perez take this dynamic duo on? The only way to find out is to pick up this first issue……or wait to read a review……or ask a friend who picks it up…….okay, so there’s more than one way. Jeez, get off my back. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
