Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
BATMAN AND ROBIN #40 $2.99 (DC Comics) – Super-powered Damian joins the Justice League and the interactions between baby-bat-jerk and Shazam alone will be worth the price of admission. Everything else? Icing, baby. (Kris Johnson)
SECRET AVENGERS #14 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s no secret that I like Secret Avengers. If you caught our interview with artist Michael Walsh this past Friday, you know that things are ramping up to a raging climax as this is the second to last issue of the series. A lot of stuff’s going down and it all links back to TLON. What’s TLON? If you don’t know by now, there’s no way I can explain it in this short blurb. It’s best that you find out for yourself in this here issue. (Andrew)
BIG HARD SEX CRIMINALS HC $39.99 (Image) – Here you go. Now you have no excuse not to be reading Sex Criminals. I mean, lookit this thing! They collected the first 10 issues for you and packaged it up all neat and nice for you right here! Pick it up this Wednesday and find yourself extremely satisfied in all the ways a person can be. (Kris Johnson)
HIT 1957 #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Gangsters, baby! Gangsters! If there’s one thing I love reading, it’s a bit of noir on a sunny afternoon. Following up on the 2013 comic, Hit 1955, crime is down in the city of Angels and all is well…..but that’s just how it seems. There’s still a war going on between the police hit squad and the crooks that used to run this town. Take another trip to the seamy underbelly of the Los Angeles underworld. That might seem like a little too much under, but it’s not. (Andrew)
BATMAN 66 MEETS THE GREEN HORNET HC $22.99 (DC Comics) – Kevin Smith, Ralph Garman, and Ty Templeton team up to bring you THE team-up to end all team-ups! Adam West-Batman! Bruce Lee-Kato! Burt Ward-Robin… and… That other guy-Green Hornet! The series was a big hit when it landed on stands in single issues and now DC comics is giving you a second chance to get in on the awesome by grabbing this collection. Go on. Break that fun meter. (Kris Johnson)
WE CAN NEVER GO HOME #1 $3.99 (Black Mask) – Livin’ and lovin’ on the run. That’s what Duncan and Madison, two teenagers who’ve just discovered they have extraordinary powers are doing. After a deadly accident involving said powers, they’ve had to flee their home town and are now running back through America and away from their problems. That always works for folks like these, right? (Andrew)
PASTAWAYS #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – It’s 2015 and a bunch of whackos from the future have crash-landed in our time, ripping a butt-load of holes in the space-time continuum while they’re at it! Now, reality is being overrun by robots, dinos, maybe a pirate or two, and other assorted wackiness with only those aforementioned time-dinguses equipped to stop the madness. Will they set things right or is all of existence officially fucked? Find out this week! (Kris Johnson)
JUST SO HAPPENS GN $17.95 (Abrams Comicarts) – Life is what happens when you’re making other plans. That’s the crux of this graphic novel by Fumio Obata about Yumiko, a young Japanese woman living in England. She’s got a great life, a great job, a great guy and things are looking up. And wouldn’t you know it, life comes along and knocks her on her ass with the death of her father. So she returns to Tokyo to pay her respects and is immersed in the culture and living that she’s left behind. This causes her to question where her future truly lies. Human drama told through sequential art. Don’t tell me this isn’t literature…..’cause it damn well sure sounds like it. Check it out. (Andrew)
AMAZING X-MEN #18 $3.99 (Marvel) – A new Juggernaut is finally chosen! Will Cain Marko regain his juggolicious abilities or will the crimson power of Cytorrak fall to another? Whoever emerges all big, red, and helmeted will immediately be going to toe to toe with Colossus, so they better bring their big boy (or girl) boots, along with those funny little red hand bands Juggy likes sporting so much, ‘cause they’re gonna need ‘em! (Kris Johnson)
GOON ONCE UPON A HARD TIME #2 $3.50 (Dark Horse) – There’s just a few more issues until The Goon goes away FOREVER! Well, maybe not forever, but at least for a little while. Goon’s ready to die and is waiting for the men that are coming to kill him. So what to do while he waits? Why not read a book? Just so happens that the story of this book has a haunting similarity to the Goon’s own descent into the feral state he’s in now. Eric Powell gives us an introspective Goon tale that pays tribute to the one and only H.G. Wells. Good times all around…..or should I say Goon times! (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
