Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
LEGACY OF LUTHER STRODE #1 $3.99 (Image) – The final chapter of this cult hit is here. Yeah, you know those Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore dudes that have been tearing it up over at Marvel and Image for months on books not involving Luther Strode? Well, now they’ve returned to the character that put them on the map and are bringing with them the most massive installment yet. If this is your first time in Strode waters, prepare yourself for one of the most violent comics you’ve ever laid eyes on. You’ve been warned. (Kris Johnson)
REBELS #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Hey, wait a second! I thought Marvel has all the Star Wars titles now! Oh, this isn’t a Star Wars book? It’s about the rebels of the Revolutionary War? Okay, well that makes a little more sense, I guess. It’s written by Brian Wood. Wait, didn’t he used to write the Dark Horse Star Wars book? I’m confused again. But some of the characters are dressed like they’re on that show TURN. I’m back on board again. This comic set in 1775 tells the dramatic tale of a young couple who’s marriage is put to the test as the front line is right on their doorstep. No space opera needed. (Andrew)
MILES MORALES ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #12 $3.99 (Marvel) – Secret Wars is upon us and with it, the end of all things! Does this, the concluding chapter of Ultimate Spider-Man, also spell the end of Miles Morales? If the cover for the forthcoming All-New Avengers comic is any indication, I’m going to say the answer is ‘no’. But do you really want to miss out on the final issue of Miles’s solo title? Of course not. He’s way too awesome to ignore. (Kris Johnson)
ASTRO CITY FAMILY ALBUM TP $16.99 (Vertigo) – Over 20 years and Astro City is still going strong. What better way to celebrate this fact than to pick up the new edition of the Family Album trade, featuring stories with Jack in the Box (he’s a hero, not a fast food chain) and the First Family (way more exciting than the Fantastic Four!). The building blocks of the AC universe can be found within the pages of this here collected edition. And for those of you who still like that Alex Ross guy, there’s a new cover from him as well. (Andrew)
MASKS 2 #1 $3.99 (Dynamite) – The Red Death, a being possessed of the ability to kill by the thousands in a matter of seconds, intends to unleash its wrath on the denizens of the Dynamite universe! Who can hope to stop her? Well, how about every bad-ass pulp hero Dynamite has their mitts on! Yup, that means Green Hornet, Kato, The Shadow, Black Terror, and many more are suiting up, teaming up, and fucking up any and all evil that stands in the way of the safe and sound time stream. Oh yeah, there’s like multiple timelines at work here. So, yup, added wrinkle, that. (Kris Johnson)
JUPITER’S CIRCLE #1 $3.50 (Image) – If you’re like me, you’ve been reading Jupiter’s Legacy from Mark Millar and Frank Quitely and been hoping to see less of those bratty, stupid 20-somethings with too much power and more of their parent’s story on just how they became the world’s greatest heroes. AND NOW YOU CAN! Looking forward to reading issue 1 and then waiting 6 months to read issue 2……just kidding (not really). (Andrew)
REANIMATOR #1 $3.99 (Dynamite) – Dr. Herbert West is back and he’s selling zombie brain fluid as a mind-expanding narcotic to continue funding his kooky-ass reanimation research. What a card! Unfortunately for ol’ Herb, not everyone agrees with me and pretty soon he has some Elder God cultists and Haitian Voodoo practitioners on his tail. Whatever results from the collision is sure to be bloody. And weird. Probably mostly weird. (Kris Johnson)
BIG MAN PLANS #2 $3.50 (Image) – Don’t mess with a little guy when he’s got his hands on a drywall hatchett…..or any other tool for that matter. Big Man continues his quest for revenge. Why? More clues are revealed in the pages of this issue. Go buy it. That is all. (Andrew)
CONVERGENCE BATMAN & ROBIN #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Welcome back to the Pre-Flashpoint DCU! Seeing as how the Bat-Family books didn’t really changed much as the result of the event (aside from getting a fuckey new timeline that makes no sense), I’m interested to see how a trip back to Pre-52 land differs from the current state of things. Ron Marz (remember him?) will team up with Denys Cowan to relate this tale of bat-bros at odds with each other inside of one of Brainiac’s fancy domed cities. Should be a fun diversion, if nothing else. (Kris Johnson)
SHIELD #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – I swear, I never thought I would ever see this day. A day when I was actually excited to read a comic starring one of the Fantastic Four. Sue Storm shows a new side of herself as a super secret spy working for S.H.I.E.L.D. Her position is so secret, those other three bozos she lives with don’t even know. But they’re about to find out. Sue’s doing her last mission for the world’s biggest espinage organization. I’m betting things don’t go smoothly. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
