Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. Kris Johnson is off this week, so I’m flying solo. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
ARCHIE VS PREDATOR #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Not since Punisher meets Archie have I been this excited. The Riverdale gang heads to Costa Rica for some fun in the sun. Little do they know they’re soon to be hunted for sport by the deadliest hunter in the universe. Well we know Veronica’s a goner ’cause there’s no way she’ll try that mud trick. Too messy for her liking. Can’t wait to see yet another interesting mash-up.
DEADSHOT: BULLETPROOF TP $14.99 (DC Comics) – Just as the recent release of Daredevil on Netflix has shown, you can’t go wrong if you got Christos Gage on writing duties. In this trade collecting the 5 issue limited series, we find out Deadshot’s a dad! And guess what? So does he! What’s worse is that his daughter’s living in a shitty neighbourhood. Leave it to the crack-shot merc to clean things up a bit the only way he knows how. Providing safety and security through violence and fear, Deady’s gonna win Father of the year in no time.
STUMPTOWN HC VOL 03 $29.99 (Oni) – Bad-ass P.I. Dex Parios’ third adventure is now available in hardcover form. In this tale, she takes on soccer hooligans…..not really, but the story does involve violence at a soccer game as a friend of hers is jumped outside the stadium. It’s up to Dex to find out whodunnit. Greg Rucka continues to bring us cool women that kick butt, this time drawn by Justin Greenwood. If you missed this when it was out in issues, now’s the time to catch up!
FADE OUT #5 $3.50 (Image) – The second story arc begins! Well, story arc is the wrong word as this is one big story, isn’t it? A new chapter begins in a tale of murder most fowl in Hollyweird. Our heroes find out that someone knows the identity of Valerie Sommers’ killer. But to root out that someone, they may have to risk exposing themselves…..not like that…..you know what I mean…..you’re just crass…….stop reading this and pick up the book already.
HOW TO SELF-PUBLISH COMICS MASTER EDITION $19.99 (Devils Due) – If there’s one thing Devils Due knows how to do, it’s to put out guides on how to self publish comics. They’ve sold the shit out this here book over the years and they’re aiming to do it again. This time, it’s not just Josh Blaylock’s prose instructional guide as they’ve included further writings by Tim Seeley as well! Pick up the book. It just might inspire you to write a How-To booklet of your own. You may even end up writing a comic too!
ARES & APHRODITE GN $19.99 (Oni) – Jamie S. Rich brings us yet another love story with a twist. This time it’s a bet between a lawyer and wedding planner. If their clients, a movie producer and a Hollywood starlet, actually end up tying the knot, they will go on a date. Not really a bet as much as an agreement. I’m sure there’s more to it. With charming artwork by Megan Levens, there more than likely is.
MS MARVEL #14 $2.99 (Marvel) – Just a few more issues to this series…..I find myself writing those words a lot these days. You’d think there was a company-wide reboot coming. In this issue, Kamala Khan deals with yet another highly dramatic situation: she’s got a crush. Let’s see how she handles herself as she deals with those teenage hormones. I’m pretty sure it will involve fighting some bad guy in Jersey and stretching and stuff. That’s what usually works for her.
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
