Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
SAGA #28 $2.99 (Image) – Hey look! Saga made it back on my list of picks after an absence of several months. It’s still great. You really should be reading it… But, uhhh, you already know that, right? (Kris Johnson)
ASTRO CITY #23 $3.99 (DC Comics) – It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock n’ roll-oll-oll, especially if you’re a talking gorilla. But anything’s possible in Astro City, right? Here comes another romp through comic nostalgia with a huge helping of strong characters and good ol’ fashioned heart….the one in our bodiesm, that is. Not the band fronted by the Wilson sisters. They rock and all but they don’t make an appearance here……at least not that I know of. (Andrew)
SECRET WARS #2 $4.99 (Marvel) – Okay, so in the last issue, the Marvel Universe as we know it was destroyed. Now, from the ruins rises BATTLEWORLD! What does that mean? My guess is fights, fights, and more fights! And judging by the cover, the fights in this issue will involve various Thors! Drunken, hammer-laden fights. My kinda fights… Fights. (Kris Johnson)
MYTHIC #1 $1.99 (Image) – I always knew magic was real. Those crazy science guys tried to convince me otherwise but thanks to this comic, everyone will know the truth. What happens when magic breaks? Better get Mythic. Leave it to an Apache Shaman, a Greek Immortal and a Cellphone Salesman to save the world. They got this. Sounds like writer Phil Hester and artist John McCrea got this. Why don’t you go get this for $1.99 (special first issue price)? Check out the magic for yourself. (Andrew)
THOR #8 $3.99 (Marvel) – Speaking of Thor, here she is! Revealed! FINALLY! Who will it be? I have no idea but we’ll all find out the truth after she engages in a brawl to end it all with the infamous Destroyer. Marvel promises tons of guest stars and a “shocking” return. I’ll be there like I am each and every month, but maybe you fine folks should join me this time, yeah? (Kris Johnson)
LANTERN CITY #1 $3.99 (Boom) – A steampunk tale about class war and risking it all to help your family and improve your station? Sounds like the stuff that Paul Jenkins and Matthew Daley can weave into an interesting story. With art from Carlos Magno, it’s not all that bad to look at either. If you’re stopping by for fun and adventure, we’ll leave the lantern burning for you. (Andrew)
HARROW COUNTY #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook combine their mighty powers of comic bookery to create a new Southern Gothic horror book about a young woman named Emmy and her frightening family history. Ghosts, goblins, and all kinds of other things that go bump in the night are all up in and around her business and she’s gonna find out why, dammit! (Kris Johnson)
NIGHT NURSE #1 $7.99 (Marvel) – HELLO NURSE! It appears that everything Night is Nurse again with this new reprint of short lived Marvel series. Thanks to a little show you may have heard about, Marvel’s Daredevil, fans have shown some interest in checking out the adventures of the original Nurse, Linda Carter (no relation). Not only does it collect the original 4 issue mini from the 70s but also her appearance in Bendis’ Daredevil run. Looks like I now have plans for this 8 bucks in my wallet. Nice how that all worked out. (Andrew)
MANTLE #1 $3.99 (Image) – Some dude named Robbie gets struck by lightning to become the latest host for an unimaginable power known as THE MANTLE. Only problem is an omnipotent nutbag that goes by the name of The Plague has spent the past half-century ganking the living hell out of Mantles and has no intention of stopping now. This book sounds like they took the best parts of the Shazam reboot, mixed them together with some Highlander and then plonked them down into my readily awaiting brain. I’m in. Show me what you got, Ed Brisson. (Kris Johnson)
GI JOE SNAKE EYES: AGENT OF COBRA #5 $3.99 (IDW) – This is it! The final chapter in the story of the Good Snake who went Bad Snake but not all the way bad but not all the way good either. You following? Try and keep up. Will he choose Cobra or will he choose Joe? No one knows for certain. One thing we all do know is that the ninja commando is gonna have his hands full doing battle with his boy Storm Shadow. There’s no doubt about that. The fate of the Snake hangs in the balance in this finale issue. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
