Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN RENEW YOUR VOWS #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – People have been clamouring for it ever since our pal Pete made that stupid-ass deal with Mephisto and now it’s finally happening… That’s right, Dan Slott and Adam Kubert are at long last bringing Peter Parker and Mary Jane back together… iiiiiin the amalgamated reality of Battleworld but that’s besides the point! Mary Jane! Peter Parker! Making babies! That’s gotta make some people happy. Right? Right? Right. (Kris Johnson)
DEAD DROP #2 $3.99 (Valiant) – It’s the second chapter of the thrill ride that is Dead Drop, a blockbuster action comic that stars a smattering of your favourite Valiant characters, each with their own story. This issue, Archer’s called up to try and stop the mysterious group that’s stolen a bio weapon that they plan to unleash on New York. But how can a guy with a bow and arrows stop a bio weapon? And why isn’t he wearing pants? Ales Kot and Adam Gorham have made me do something I thought I’d never do: Actually care about a Valiant comic. Bravo, gentlemen, BRAVO! (Andrew)
MASTER OF KUNG FU #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – I’m so damn happy that Master of Kung Fu #1 lived up to and exceeded my expectations. It’s about damn time that Shang Chi got some quality storytelling to go along with the phenomenal character that he is. Yeah yeah, it’s out of continuity, Battleworld goodness, but it’s kung fu schools and drunken fighting and the entire Marvel Universe viewed through the lens of the Shaw Brothers. If that doesn’t sound awesome to you, well, you should probably get your awesome detector repaired ’cause that shit’s broken, son. (Kris Johnson)
AIRBOY #1 $2.99 (Image) – James Robinson has garnered a reputation for taking characters from the Golden Age and revamping them for a modern comic audience. But he’s gotten pretty bored with that. So what does he do when given the chance to relaunch the classic Airboy? Why go all meta on your ass, of course! Robinson and artist Greg Hinkle are not just the creative team behind this book but also the two lead characters assigned to bring the 1940s hero back, while getting majorly shitfaced in the process. But what if the fictional character steps into the real characters’ world in a fictional universe? Crazy-Ass Shit is what. CRA-ZY-ASS-SHIT! (Andrew)
AGE OF REPTILES ANCIENT EGYPTIANS #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Ricardo Delgado’s wordless Age of Reptiles series returns with this new installment. Chronicling the experiences of Spinosaurus aegyptiacus across the brutal landscape of Cretaceous Africa, this has all the dino action necessary to prime even the most hardcore lover of thunder lizards for the madness that awaits this summer with Jurassic World. (Kris Johnson)
GROOT #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – He is Groot and he’s taken the world by storm. All he had to do was say his name a bunch of times in a big summer movie that everybody loved. (He also appeared a bunch of times on Geek Hard as well….that might’ve helped.) Now he’s got his own comic. I wonder what complex dialogue might be coming our way in this one. Maybe he’ll team up with Man Thing at some point. That’ll really change the word count in the comic, I’m sure. (Andrew)
THE HERO BOOK ONE HC $24.99 (Dark Horse) – Animator David Rubin retells the life story of the legendary Heracles in this new series of graphic novel hardcovers. From his mythic birth to the Twelve Labours, all the way through to the end of his demigod days, The Hero promises to cover it all. Experience the legend in a whole new way and grab this first volume! (Kris Johnson)
BROKEN WORLD #1 $3.99 (Boom) – End of the world coming and some folks are getting off this mudball of a planet while they still can. Except for Elena Marlowe, that is. Her entire family was approved for off world travel….but not her. Her application was denied due to her mysterious past. But she’s not giving up. She’s going to fake her way on somehow. Hopefully that somehow comes fast as there’s a meteor on it’s way to Earth and it ain’t slowing down any time soon. Better hurry, girl. (Andrew)
SECRET WARS #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – I’m loving this series. LOVING IT. It’s so damn weird. And Game of Thrones-y. And weird. In the tail end of last issue, the baddies from the Ultimate Universe and the 616 were released from their inter-dimensional life raft and into this brave new BattleWorld. What will become of this new reality when evil Ultimate Reed Richards and goddamn Thanos step to Our Lord God Doom? Explosions and punching, I’ll bet. (Kris Johnson)
MORNING GLORIES #46 $3.50 (Image) – Here’s a book I haven’t talked about for a long time. Why? It’s not that didn’t warrant being here. It’s still one of the best damn books you’ll ever read. But like that Matrix film from a ways back, it’s something that can’t be explained….wait, you can totally explain the Matrix film – it’s a overblown piece of crap trying to pass itself off as deep – It’s the Matrix itself that can’t be explained. You have to experience it for yourself. That’s kind of what it’s like with this book….wait, I don’t mean it’s a shitty movie. What am I trying to say here? It’s really cool. That’s it. Hey look, a school girl with a big gun! What was I talking about? (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
