Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am  joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.

Here we go.

Archie #1

ARCHIE #1 $3.99 (Archie) – A classic character gets a superstar infused reboot as the team of Mark Waid and Fiona Staples bring our favourite ginger teen and the rest of the Riverdale gang into the 21st century. No zombies. No witches. No forbidden romances with Mr Weatherbee. Just Archie being Archie with an eye towards the modern world. Should be a good one. (Kris Johnson)

IRON FIST EPIC COLLECTION TP FURY OF IRON FIST $39.99 (Marvel) – You want some Kung-Fu-Kicking-Action, seventies style? You’ve come to the right place with the Iron Fist Epic Collection. And when they say epic, they truly mean EPIC! This tale is a roaring rampage of revenge! Danny Rand leaves the possibility of immortality behind to return New York and avenge the death of his father. Massive martial arts battles with mystic ninjas, team-ups with the Daughters of the Dragon and a showdown with the Steel Serpent are also in store for whoever decides to read the hallowed pages of this sacred tome. Plus, did I mention the kung-fu-kicking-action? (Andrew)

BATMAN #42 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Surprise! I enjoyed last issue’s Robo-Bat-Tick relaunch. It was fun and introduced enough intriguing plot elements and character twists to keep me interested. As we all know the new status quo will be temporary, I’ve decided to give the story a chance. Sure, the suit still looks dumb but I think that may be the point. (Kris Johnson)

STK674257BIG MAN PLANS #4 $3.50 (Image) – The fourth and final chapter in this bloody, roaring rampage of revenge! (Getting to use this phrase twice in one column has always been a dream of mine!) We’ll get to see some pretty gruesome stuff, that’s for sure. But more importantly, we’ll finally get to the bottom of why the hell this guy is going around killing all these folks in the first place. It has to be more than just short jokes, right? Either way, it’s been a wild ride and I am itchin’ to see what conclusion is in store for us. (Andrew)

STAR WARS LANDO #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Well what do we have here? The galaxy’s foremost scoundrel (sorry Han) and former big boss of Cloud City gets his own comic series. Marvel has done amazing work with each and every title they’ve released since being re-granted the catalogue of a galaxy far far away and I have no doubt the trend will continue with the adventures of the smoothest pirate in the universe. (Kris Johnson)

STRANGE FRUIT #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Set against the backdrop of the Great Mississippi flood of 1927, this new comic from Mark Waid and J.G. Jones touches on the racial and social divisions of the time. Just as the levees are set to break, a fiery messenger appears in the sky, heralding the arrival of a being that will rip open the tensions of this southern plantation town. Is this the coming of a savior? Beautifully painted artwork for what will most likely be a powerful story is set to hit the comic racks this Wednesday. (Andrew)

STK676963MASTER OF KUNG FU #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – The most awesome of all Secret Wars spin-offs rolls on in this week’s third issue! Shang Chi has accepted his position as head of a Kung Fu school peopled entirely with hopeless and skill-deprived misfits. Why the hell would he do that? To help them survive… and to gain himself entry into a Kung Fu tournament that could win him leadership of the realm, of course! Kung-Fantastic! (Kris Johnson)

THE GUN #1 $3.99 (Creature)Happiness is a warm gun. Hap-pi-ness-es-s is a warm gun, mama. Yes it is. At least to the folks in this story, it is. This is the tale of one hand gun that passes from owner to owner and the effects it has on them while it’s in their possession. This first story is about a struggling writer who buys the pistol at a pawnshop and finds a new lease on life. I guess this book could end up being like a “Littlest Hobo” series but with a gun instead of a dog. It will more likely be some fucked-up, Twilight Zone-like morality play each issue. Either way, it piques my interest. (Andrew)

MAD MAX FURY ROAD MAX #1 (of 2) $4.99 (Vertigo) – The movie was just so damn kick-ass and cool as hell that one of these prequel series just has to good, right? Right? Guys? … (Kris Johnson)

STK677333IMAGE GIANT SIZED CREATOR PROOF BLACK SCIENCE #1 $19.99 (Image) – Anyone who picked up Black Science when it first came out (or later in trade) knows what a beautiful book it is. Matteo Scalera really outdid himself when it comes to the masterful illustrations that lie within. Now you can drool over this amazing artwork with the Image Giant Sized Creator Proof Edition…..but don’t really drool over it. It’ll get ruined that way. I was speaking figuratively, of course. Anyways…….Presented in black inks and gauche washes on 11×17-sized pages, you’ll be able to take in all the glory that is this book. And it’s 19.99! That ain’t bad considering how much it would cost you to pick up any of these pages at this size on their own. It’s a steal!…..but don’t steal it. Go buy one, okay? (Andrew)

So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
