Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
STAR WARS #7 $3.99 (Marvel) – Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi tell a lost tale of Obi-wan Kenobi! Old Ben is well into his life as a crazy old hermit on the dunes of Tatooine as the tale opens. When the villainous tendencies of the planet’s roughest denizens become too much for a Jedi Knight to ignore, will Obi-Wan reveal himself to uphold law and order in the galaxy? What will be the consequences of doing what is right? Should be a good one. (Kris Johnson)
BATGIRL ANNUAL #3 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Continuing with the re-incorporation of Babara Gordon into the Bat-world, this annual pits her against Dick Grayson, international man of mystery. The kicker is she doesn’t know who the hell she’s fighting and is dying to find out. Dick, who’s suppose to be dead, is determined to make sure she doesn’t find out. What sparks will fly in this special issue? And that’s not all! Babs also shows up at Gotham Academy too! This book sounds like a big helping of awesome with an order of awesome on the side. (Andrew)
MILES MORALES ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN ULTIMATE COLL TP BOOK 01 $34.99 (Marvel) – We all love Miles Morales. It’s pretty much a universal fact at this point. Now you can pass along what you have learned to someone who may not be as enlightened as you with this convenient beast of a Miles Morales compendium. Containing the entire run of Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man as well as the absolutely phenomenal Spider-Men mini-series (616 Pete meets Miles!), this book is all you’ll ever need to indoctrinate someone into the cult of Morales. Now go. Proliferate. (Kris Johnson)
SEX CRIMINALS #11 $3.50 (Image) – Hey, remember that book, Sex Criminals? It was a cool comic about a girl and a guy who can freeze time by having sex. You remember this book. I know, I know, they haven’t come out with an issue in years (months, really). That’s about to change as Sex Criminals is back! It’s a brand new story and the perfect “jumping on” point for those who’ve missed out so far. To make it extra special, Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky have randomly picked 1000 covers to customize for our amusement and pleasure. Every issue comes in a sealed bag, so you won’t know if you got one of these covers until after you buy it. You feelin’ lucky? (Andrew)
SOUTHERN BASTARDS #10 $3.50 (Image) – Jason Aaron. Jason Latour. I’ve spoken at length about how great this book is so just do us all a favour and just start reading the damn thing and I’ll stop, alright? Alright. (Kris Johnson)
FUBAR DECLASSIFIED TP $11.95 (Alterna) – This just in: The United States Government has secrets! I know, shocking, isn’t it? What if I was to tell you that one of these secrets was that they’ve been using the undead to fight in wars since the Bay of Pigs? That’s right, zombie soldiers have been “fighting for freedom” over land, sea and air for decades, even in Afghanistan. Now these “top secret” tales of battle can be told in this handy, dandy trade. Pick it up and find out what’s really going on in some of the biggest U.S. conflicts. (Andrew)
THORS #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – Another great Secret Wars tie-in rolls on! After last issue’s shocking death and big-time reveal, Ultimate Thor’s search for the one-woman serial killer heats up. Part police procedural, part superhero smackdown, Thors presents a unique experience within the realm of the Marvel universe and it’s absolutely worth your time and money. Don’t miss out on this limited time engagement, ‘cause when Secret Wars is over, so too are all of these awesome experimental comics. Get it while it lasts. (Kris Johnson)
SHIELD #8 $3.99 (Marvel) – Agent May and Mockingbird – two bad-asses who’ve each been in their fair share of sticky situations. In this issue, they team up and take on a mob of suped-up monstrosities whose souls have been taken from them. They’ve gotta find a way to reunite them with said souls or this isn’t going to be a war that S.H.I.E.L.D. can win. I would be worried, but it’s Agent May and Mockingbird. They’ve got this, right? Let’s hope so. (Andrew)
LOBSTER JOHNSON A CHAIN FORGED IN LIFE ONE SHOT $3.50 (Dark Horse) – It’s hot as hell outside, so why how about a little Christmas in July to cool that shizz down? I know, I know, most of us just want to enjoy that beautiful sunshine and not give a moment’s thought to the wintery madness that lay ahead for us just a few months from now, but maaaaaan, this is Lobster Johnson we’re talking about! And in this one he saves Santa and Christmas! Summer’ll still be here when you turn that last page, don’t worry. (Kris Johnson)
LAZARUS #18 $3.50 (Image) – I know it’s only issue two of the latest story arc, Poison, but it’s about time that Forever leads her troops into battle and gets down there on the front. Sure, it’s the place the forces of Hock want her to be. Hell, it’s where half her family wants her to be. But is she playing right into her enemy’s hands or is this best move she can make? Time will tell and so will this issue. Forever was made for war. Let’s see if it was made for her. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
