Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN RENEW YOUR VOWS #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – Black costume Spidey! Married Pete and Mary Jane! Parker Spawn! Dan Slott! Adam Kubert! Top level talent on a marquee character telling a story where all bets are off and absolutely anything can happen. This is one of the absolute purest pleasures of the Secret Wars experiment. Miss it and you’ll regret it. (Kris Johnson)
KAPTARA #4 $3.50 (Image) – Ah Kaptara, a magical land of heroic and homo-erotic tales, where cats are tanks and physical trolls are a lot like the internet ones we have back home. Such an amazing place where anything can happen. In this issue, our “hero” Keith Kanga actually finds a way home. Well that was fast. Let’s see if it’s really that easy (I’m guessing it’s not). (Andrew)
RED SONJA CONAN #1 of 4 $3.99 (Dynamite) – As we all know, Hyperborea is just lousy with evil sorcerers. They’re like the third most common threat to the populace right after giant snakes and reanimated skeletons. Luckily for us evil sorcerers causing mischief is the perfect excuse to bring together Conan and Red Sonja one more time. This go-round, the Cimmerian and the She-Devil with a Sword each lead mercenary bands against a threat that only their combined might can hope to topple. Will they succeed? Of course, but the journey should be a bad-ass one. (Kris Johnson)
JOHN FLOOD #1 $3.99 (Boom) – I love me some private eye stories. Solving crimes is what I like and a good PI story is nothing but that. This one has a twist, of course……they always have a twist these days. John Flood was involved in a government experiment that makes it so he doesn’t need to sleep but is in a constant state of dreaming. His dream world and the real world are always colliding. This opens him up to a new state of perception. One that allows him to see how an ex-cop is linked to a number of unsolved murders. Sounds like a winner to me! (Andrew)
WE STAND ON GUARD #2 $2.99 (Image) – Brian K Vaughan and Steve Skroce bring us the second chapter of their post-apocalyptic Canada vs. USA epic! Despite the mighty pen of BKV guiding the ship, the 1st issue really took me by surprise with it’s graphic violence, unique world-building, and interesting perspective on an age old-rivalry. Here’s hoping the potential promised in the first issue fully flowers in the arctic wasteland of issue 2. (Kris Johnson)
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST EPIC COLLECTION TP HEROES FOR HIRE $39.99 (Marvel) – Yes, it’s the epic collection all Heroes for Hire fans have been waiting for. Answer me this: Why the hell isn’t there a Luke Cage/Iron Fist book slated for the All New, All Different Marvel. These guys are awesome! If you haven’t read these classic 70s stories, you’re really missing out on the greatest dynamic duo of comics. Even better then that bat guy and his bird boy friend. Find out why these two guys are getting their own Netflix Series (after Jessica Jones and more Daredevil). (Andrew)
THIS DAMNED BAND #1 of 6 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – Paul Cornell and Tony Parker bring us the twisted tale of Motherfather, a lumbering beast from the golden age of Classic Rock who spent years thinking they were only pretending to worship the Dark Lord Satan until the day they discovered there was nothing pretend about it. Comedy, mayhem, and rock n’ roll madness ensue! (Kris Johnson)
LION OF RORA GN $24.99 (Oni) – A greatly researched story about real life freedom fighter Joshua Janavel written by the dynamic writing duo of Christos and Ruth Gage. What more do you need me to tell you? Go buy this book. Now back to Stan Lee, er, I mean Kris Johnson hyping the latest Secret Wars title. (Andrew)
INFINITY GAUNTLET #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – A family of Novas versus a time-travelling Mad Titan! Can the power of the Nova Force stand against the world-shattering might of Thanos? I sure as hell don’t know, but throw in a few Infinity Gems and the answer becomes even murkier. Will the universe survive the throwdown? Will Battleworld? Will the multiverse? (Kris Johnson)
DARK CORRIDOR #1 $3.99 (Image) – Here’s one that’s sure to get a piece of the action. The coastal city of Red Circle is mobbed up beyond compare. That is until female, motorcycle-riding assassins come to town and start picking ’em off. A gangster story with a French New Wave vibe. Find out who sleeps with the fishes…..it’s a coastal city so I’m certain one of the bodies will be found in the water. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
