Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
STAR WARS: LANDO #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – Well, what do we have here? A great book starring everyone’s favourite galaxy-hopping scoundrel, that’s what! Lando continues to confound and just plain old vex the shit out of the Empire in this tremendously fun Star Wars comic care of Charles Soule and Alex Maleev. And sure, we’re three issues in and there’s not much story left for those new readers among us but, trust me, you’ll have a blast. (Kris Johnson)
ANT-MAN: LAST DAYS #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Hey guys, did you know that the Marvel Universe is ending? You didn’t? You sure? I mean it’s all Marvel’s been talking about since before Secret Wars began. Anyways, because of this a lot of the characters from the 616 continuity are having their “Last Days”. Punisher had his. Black Widow had hers…..etc. Now it’s Ant-Man’s turn. So how do an old folks’ home, an obese mobster, a mysterious woman and an old enemy fit into it? Guess you’ll have to pick it up and find out. What? You think I’m gonna tell you everything? (Andrew)
SCALPED HC BOOK 02 DELUXE EDITION $29.99 (Vertigo) – Collecting Issues 12-24 of the series, the Scalped Volume 2 hardcover continues the hardboiled tale of Dash Bad Horse’s return to Prairie Road Rez. As he acclimates to life as a tribal cop under the thumb of Chief Red Crow, Dash struggles with his loyalties and true mission while attempting to solve a vicious double-murder. If you have never read Scalped, grab Volume 1 and devour it in time to dive into Volume 2 this Wednesday. If you have read Scalped, then this fine-ass hardcover will look great on your bookshelf. (Kris Johnson)
JOE FRANKENSTEIN HC $24.99 (IDW) – Some Joes have all the luck. Joe Cool, Joe Popular, G.I. Joe, Joe Frankenstein. Okay, maybe not that last one. After a visit from a very famous Monster, Joe Pratt finds out that he’s the living heir to the Frankenstein name. That’s a name you don’t want to be sportin’ if you’re trying to avoid things that go bump in the night. Some of these things are looking for Joe and I don’t think it’s the welcome wagon. Action, Adventure and Horror from Graham Nolan & Chuck Dixon. Sounds like a winner to me. (Andrew)
SPREAD #9 $3.50 (Image) – It’s been almost three goddamn months since the last issue of Spread — THREE!! — and I ain’t happy about the wait. That said, I am extremely happy that I will now have a new issue in my hands this Wednesday, so it’s a total bittersweet, bi-polar, double-edged sword thing going on. Justin Jordan and Kyle Strahm continue their post-apocalytic horror epic in the goriest of ways and you get to purchase a front row ticket for just $3.50! Lucky. (Kris Johnson)
DO-GOODERS HC $9.99 (Oni) – Our boy J. Torres is back again with artist Justin Wagner to bring you new hero book for the little do-gooders in your life. Pick up this board comic for your kid and help them find out what it takes to be a hero! Hero kids are the best kind of kids, I say. (Andrew)
MARVEL ZOMBIES #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – Man, so many awesome comics spinning out of Secret Wars that it’s nearly criminal. It’s like Marvel copied the template created by DC for Convergence but actually made the central mini-series good, too. While the Distinguished Competition grabs some aloe for that burn, let me just tell you quickly how the adventures of Elsa Bloodstone beyond the Shield are not to be missed. Action, mayhem, exploding body parts, and sarcasm the likes of which you have seen many times but still enjoy a great deal are all contained within these pages! It’s a no brainer! (hyuk hyuk) (Kris Johnson)
INHUMANS BY PAUL JENKINS AND JAE LEE TP $34.99 (Marvel) – The Inhuman revolution is coming. Are you sure you’re on the right side? It’s no secret that starting this Fall, Marvel is going to cram as much Inhumans-related stuff down our throats. Before that happens, why not read this new printing of the BEST Inhumans story ever told, from the creative minds of Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee. Back when Marvel Knights launched back in 1998, these two cats actually made the Inhumans cool. So Marvel would be wise to look at what they did and just copy it outright. That’s usually what always works in comics, right? (Andrew)
DRIVE #1 $3.99 (IDW) – Hey remember that super-cool movie that came out a few years ago starring Adrienne Kress’s muse, Ryan Gosling? Y’know, the one that a ton of people love and a whole bunch of others absolutely fucking hated because they thought they were getting Fast 20 and so totally didn’t? Yeah, so that was based on a book… and now the book has become a comic. Should be pretty damn super-cool, too. No Ryan Gosling though. Tears. (Kris Johnson)
IMAGE GIANT SIZED ARTISTS PROOF ED: WALKING DEAD #1 $19.99 (Image) – Like I said in my review for WDS5 earlier, this feels like Walking Dead week. And what better way to cap it off then by picking up the Artist Proof Edition of the issue that starter it all? Oversized and untouched, take a look at the fine artwork of Tony Moore on this now classic book. Check out everybody’s favourite Sherrif’s Deputy at the beginning of the tale. Like I said before, the season premiere is still weeks off, so here’s one more thing to tide you over. Enjoy. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
