Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
HEAD LOPPER #1 $5.99 (Image) – This book is called Head Lopper. It stars a nomadic barbarian with the disembodied head of a witch for a sidekick. He chops off the heads of stuff that pisses him off. It’s awesome and you’re gonna read it. (Kris Johnson)
HARLEY QUINN ROAD TRIP SPECIAL #1 $5.99 (DC Comics) – The classic American road trip. What makes this one so different from all the other ones we’ve read about over the years? Well, this time we’re looking at one involving Harley, Catwoman and Poison Ivy. Shit’s about to get fucking crazy on the roadways! Amanda Connor and Jimmy Palmiotti continue their Harley-opus with this one-shot that’s bound to entertain…..and leave a destroyed vehicle or two along the way. (Andrew)
STAR WARS: SHATTERED EMPIRE #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – What happened after the fall of the Second Death Star? Sit down, everyone who read Extended Universe novelizations produced prior to 2012. You’re wrong. Why? Because Disney did away with that shit and you should be over it by now. The future begins here and Marvel is gonna set ya’ll straight, ya hear? Yeah, I know it stings, but your tour guides in the New Republic will be the fucking phenomenal Punisher duo of Greg Rucka and Marco Checchetto, so that should ease your mental anguish at least a little bit. The Force Awakens is a little under 100 days away so prepare yourself for a little midi-chlorian-free foreplay and enjoy. (Kris Johnson)
VIRGIL TP $9.99 (Image) – This original graphic novel follows a tale of bloody revenge as an outed cop who was left beaten, betrayed and banished makes his way across Jamaica to exact justice. Sounds like an interesting read and the price is right at just (say it with me now) $9.99!!! (Andrew)
BATMAN #44 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Snyder has done a great job introducing a number of cool new concepts, character wrinkles, and bad-ass super villains to the Bat-Mythos since taking the reigns as the custodian of all things flying-rat related a few years ago. One of the most intriguing contributions has been the addition of Mr. Bloom to ol’ Batsy’s famed Rogues Gallery. This week, the always amazing JOCK joins Snyder to fill us in the flora-fueled fiend’s origin. 5 bucks says he’s secretly Louie The Lilac. Matthew McConaughey will be thrilled. (Kris Johnson)
DEADLY CLASS #16 $3.50 (Image) – Even though the kiddies are going back to school this week, it’s the end of Marcus’ semester and the final exam is KILLER! No really, if he flunks it, he’s gonna die. And if he aces it, he might become a soulless sack-o-shit. Stuck between a rock in a hard place. You know, where we usually find Marcus. Can’t wait to see how he gets out of this one…..if he does get out of this one. (Andrew)
TET #1 $3.99 (IDW) – Pauls Allor and Tucker bring us a romance/murder plot set a midst the height of the Vietnam War. When a soldier on his way out of Country finds himself on the wrong end of a fellow Marine’s murder, his whole world comes crumbling down. Can he escape the hell that is The Nam or is he destined to become its latest victim? (Kris Johnson)
QUAKE SHIELD 50TH ANNIVERSARY #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – S.H.I.E.L.D. turns 50 this year and Marvel is celebrating all this month with a set of one-shots on some of the organization’s top agents. Who better to start with than my favourite super-high ranking, former S.H.I.E.L.D. directing, ex-Avenger who’s also been to space as Bucky’s tag team partner? That’s right, good old Daisy Johnson get’s the first one-shot and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Before you watch Chloe Bennett pick up her Secret Warriors all season long, check this book out and get a little more insight on the woman that can shake things up! (Andrew)
TYSON HESSE DIESEL #1 $3.99 (Boom) – In this cool new fantasy adventure series from Tyson Hesse, Diandra Diesel finds herself the inheritor of her family’s legendary airship. The only problem is the ship already has a captain and that captain doesn’t think much of Dee. BOOM! has chosen to invoke such legendary animated fair as Howl’s Moving Castle in the book’s promotion, so here’s hoping what Hesse has produced can live up to such lofty comparisons. (Kris Johnson)
MS MARVEL #18 $2.99 (Marvel) – Another ending is coming and Kamala Khan is not really ready for it. She’s been busy teaming up with her idol as of late and saving her brother and whatnot. This “Last Days” thing just kind of sneaked up on her. When you work this hard keeping Jersey City safe from bad guys, it’s easy to overlook the little things, ya know? (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
