Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.

Here we go.

STK678303BLACK MARKET TP $19.99 (Boom) – A scientific genius makes ends meet preparing corpses at a funeral home, as one does, until the day his douche-bag bro shows up on his doorstep and tells him that the secret to eradicating all disease lies within the DNA of superheroes. Only problem is, the capes and tights set aren’t exactly keen on handing over their genetic building blocks. What ever are some unscrupulous scumbags to do? (Kris Johnson)

FURY SHIELD 50TH ANNIVERSARY #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – It’s a buddy cop scenario starring father and son. This book doesn’t just have one Nick Fury. It has two! Can Nick Furys Senior and Junior work together to stop a villain from the past? My guess is they can because this is a one-shot and I don’t see a “Fury of the Father” miniseries spinning out of it. Whether you like old Nick Fury or young and hip Nick Fury, there’s something here for you. (Andrew)

HELLBOUND HC $17.99 (Dark Horse) – Two FBI agents investigate a series of gruesome murders along a rural highway. What at first appears to be the work of a serial killers begins to increasingly point to something a bit more supernatural. Horror, the backwoods, police procedural, and some dude roaming the roadside in armour made of junk combine to create a uniquely macabre experience that should help get everyone prepped for the upcoming spookiest time of year. (Kris Johnson)

STK683076COMIC BOOK STORY OF BEER GN $18.99 (Ten Speed) – Beer. It’s arguably the world’s most popular drink, bringing folks together at sporting events, watering holes and other such functions for years. So isn’t it about time there was a comic book telling of it’s history in our culture? I think so. Read this as you tie one on. (Andrew)

JOKER ENDGAME HC $29.99 (DC Comics) – The Joker and Batman’s final battle? Could be. While I thought the first Snyder arc with the Clown Prince of Crime was extremely solid, it fell just short of greatness for me. Not so with Endgame. Featuring some truly fantastic and, dare I say, iconic moments that will stand the test of time in the hallowed halls of the Bat-Mythos, this book contains every chapter of the Joker’s madcap finale including all ancillary pieces of the madman’s puzzle. Pick it up and share it with a Bat-friend. (Kris Johnson)

PUBLIC RELATIONS #1 $3.99 (Devil’s Due / 1First) – So this one’s a bit hard to explain. There’s daddy issues involved in this one as well as Dan’s taking the girl he’s been crushing on at work to his father’s 50th birthday. The kicker here is that his dad’s the king of the magical land of Sardonia. Also, Dan and his father haven’t spoken…like ever. Don’t you hate it when you’ve been estranged from your father since birth? Awkward. (Andrew)

STK681762PITIFUL HUMAN LIZARD #1 $3.99 (Chapter House) – Jason Loo’s delightful Toronto-based superhero comic has landed at Chapter House Comics! A worldwide audience finally gets to experience the awesome of this local independent hit with these sweet new reprints from the home of the newly revived Captain Canuck. In issue 1 we’re introduced to Lucas Barrett, a 9-5 desk-jockey who is so bored with his day to day life that he throws on a goofy lizard suit to battle crime as soon as the sun goes down. Sometimes he does a lot of good. Most times he just gets beat up. It’s fun. Read it. (Kris Johnson)

ASTRO CITY CONFESSION HC NEW ED $24.99 (Vertigo) – Probably one of the greatest comics of the 90s and the greatest Astro City tale EVER! It’s the classic tale of a boy who moves to the big city to learn from the greats so he can be a superhero. It’s not long until he’s the sidekick to the dark and mysterious Confessor. There’s a downside, he has to go by the name Alter-boy. Not the end of the world but it could be the end of Astro City if this crime-fighting duo doesn’t get to the bottom of a mystery that may even involve aliens. Aliens? Pick this book up and get educated on what a true superhero epic is. (Andrew)

NEW DEAL HC $16.99 (Dark Horse) – 1930s New York City. The Waldorf Astoria Hotel. When a bellhop and a maid get mixed up in some dirty business that they’d have preferred to avoid, they’ll have to stick together to navigate the murky waters of race, class politics and high-stakes grifting to have a hope of getting out in one piece. (Kris Johnson)

STK681929PEANUTS WHERE BEAGLES DARE GN $9.99 (Boom) – Boom has been doing great with the Peanuts license over the past few years, producing some great new material that lives up to the original Schulz masterpiece. This new graphic novel appears to continue the awesomeness. It’s WWI France and Snoopy must go behind enemy lines to do battle with his nemesis of the skies, the Red Barron. Will the flying ace be able to overcome insurmountable odds and win the day? Will he ever get home to have root beers with the enlisted men and swap stories of bravery and heroism? Will he be home in time for supper when Charlie Brown puts out his dog dish? The stakes are high but Snoopy’s got you covered. (Andrew)

So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!

If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
