Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
ALL NEW ALL DIFFERENT AVENGERS #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Mark Waid and Adam Kubert team up to bring us a brand new team of Avengers in the post Secret Wars Marvel U! Sure, there’s no Odinson or Steve Rogers, but in their place stand the New Thor, Sam Wilson’s Cap, Ms. Marvel and goddamn Miles Morales! That’s right, peeps, ULTIMATE SPIDEY is in the 616 and he’s an Avenger! This book would almost be a home run as long as you put some half-decent creators on it, but seeing as how it’s being penned by a Mark Waid having the best run of his entire career and penciled by a resurgent Adam Kubert, its a can’t miss proposition. (Kris Johnson)
SUPERMAN AMERICAN ALIEN #1 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Screenwriter and Superman uber-fan Max Landis gives us his take on the wonder years in the life one Clark Kent. With some top notch artists in tow, Landis will be giving us insight into what it’s like to grow up super in Smallville. In this first issue drawn by Nick Dragotta, Landis takes a look back at Martha and Jonathan trying to deal with a tiny problem with their young son: he’s begun to float, sometimes upwards of 1oo feet. The shit kids do to get attention, am I right? (Andrew)
ILLUMINATI #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – I’m a sucker for villain-centric comics and an even bigger sucker for The Hood so this new offering from Marvel is more or less catnip for my sorry butt. Who can resist yet another story where the heir apparent of Marvel’s underworld tries once again to unite his bad-hearted bros and sisters in an attempt to provide them with a better life? Oh… You can? Well, what if I told this one has Black Ant in it? You don’t know Black Ant? He’s awesome. Buy the damn book. (Kris Johnson)
THE GOON LIBRARY HC VOL 01 $39.99 (Dark Horse) – It’s come to my attention that there are still some of you out there who have not heeded my advice in checking out The Goon. I don’t know what’s wrong with you but I have yet another remedy to correct this problem. Check out the all new Library edition of Goon Volumes 0 to 3, written and illustrated by Eric Powell and coming to you in all it’s hardcover glory. Pick this up and find out why Lonely Street’s greatest protector is the baddest bad-ass you’ll every meet. (Andrew)
BATMAN #46 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Batman teams up with an unlikely ally to take on the newly minted rogue, Mr Bloom. Just who will stand with the flying rodent against this freshly sprouted threat? Why, Bruce Wayne, of course! Wait? What the shit? Oh yeah, Jim Gordon is Batman these days. A very skinny Batman. Right. Riiiiiight. (Kris Johnson)
LAST SONS OF AMERICA #1 $3.99 (Boom) – In a world where a biological terrorist attack has made it impossible for the U.S. populous to have children, adoption in booming in foreign countries like Nicaragua. Brothers Jackie and Julian run an adoption agency that still uses legal means but are up against folks who’re literally kidnapping kids. The next thing you know, the boys are on the radar of the more undesirable types and shit’s probably gonna hit the fan. Not so nice work if you can get it. (Andrew)
LIMBO #1 $2.99 (Image) – A neon-soaked noir world populated with memory-free gumshoes, femme fatales, voodoo queens and goat-eating TVs hits your comic shelf this Wednesday care of the fine folks at Image Comics. There’ll be mystery, murder, mayhem, and midriffs as far as the eye can see. I can practically taste the synth soundtrack now. (Kris Johnson)
ASSASSINS CREED #2 $3.99 (Titan) – If you heard our interview with co-writer Conor McCreery on the most recent episode of Geek Hard, you already know what interesting moments in the present and past await you in the latest issue of Assassin’s Creed. If you didn’t hear the interview, go check it out here. Do it now! (Andrew)
THE GODDAMNED #1 $3.99 (Image) – The SCALPED duo of Jason Aaron and JM Guera reteam for this brand new series that spins a Biblical-inspired tale of the “world that was”. Taking place 1655 years after that hussey Eve got our homeboy Adam booted from Eden, the world is on the ragged edge. Prehistoric beasties and murderous bands of evil submitches cut a swath across the land. It’s almost time for a rain-soaked reckoning but not before things get a helluva lot worse for the folks trying to make it day to day. (Kris Johnson)
CAPTAIN AMERICA WHITE #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – You’re probably wondering why I’m pimping this book’s 4th issue. 3 reasons. 1 – This is the Jeph Loeb tale we’ve been waiting for. The scripts for this series were written back in the Loeb’s heyday writing for The House of Ideas. 2 – Just look at that bitchin’ cover. Tim Sale’s work on this book is on par with the great work he did in Marvel’s other colour titles. 3 – That bastard Kris Johnson stole my pick for Limbo #1, so I had to pick something fast and I knew this was a quality read. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
