Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
BATMAN EUROPA #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – A comic that was announced a billion-ty years ago finally makes its way to the comic book shelf. Yep, the Batman book influenced by Jim Lee’s time in Italy and first solicited back in 2011 is actually happening and it still sounds pretty cool. Batman’s been infected with a virus for which there is no cure and his only hope for survival is the Clown Prince of Crime himself! As the arch-enemies make their way through Europe looking for answers, they’ll have to refrain from murdering each-other if the Bat is to live another day. These two guys are super-great buds so I’m sure everything’ll be fine! (Kris Johnson)
ASTONISHING ANT-MAN #2 $3.99 (Marvel) – This new Ant-Man series has a lot of appeal. If you were a fan of the previous series, the same creative team from that one’s on this one too. If you were a fan of Matt Fraction and Mike Allred’s FF series from a few years ago, this issue brings back Scott’s ex-girlfriend Darla Deering (aka Miss Thing, aka rock star girl in a Thing costume). If you’re a fan of the movie that came out this summer, this title is just as funny…..if not more. If you like all of these things and you’re not reading the book, what the hell’s wrong with you? (Andrew)
RED THORN #1 $3.99 (Vertigo) – David Baillie and Meghan Hetrick-Murante take the deep dive into Scottish mythology with this new series from Vertigo. In modern day Glasgow, a girl named Isla with the power to give her drawings life stumbles into an ancient conflict between gods and legends. When beings that had long faded into myth start tearing down the barriers between fantasy and reality, Isla will need to step up her game and accept her destiny in order to save us all. Or whatever. (Kris Johnson)
ANDRE THE GIANT GN CLOSER TO HEAVEN $12.99 (IDW) – Everyone who reads this column knows just how much I really enjoyed Box Brown’s Andre the Giant Graphic Novel from last year. Imagine my surprise when I found out that Brandon Easton and Denis Medri have just brought out a new Graphic Novel on the Eighth Wonder of World. I was floored. Maybe this will start a trend and we’ll get a new comic on Andre every year! Maybe not. I’m still buying this one. (Andrew)
MIGHTY THOR #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Jason Aaron drops a few Randy Savage elbows on comic stores this week and the return of SPOILER ALERT Jane Foster Thor is just one of ‘em. The tales that Aaron and Russell Dauterman had been spinning prior to Secret Wars in the previous iteration of this book were just phenomenal and I can only imagine they’ll continue to increase in awesomeness now that this colossal combination has returned. Will Jane continue to prove her worthiness, smash a bunch of trolls with the might of Mjolnir and perhaps conquer the cancer that ravages her body? Begin the journey towards those answers this week! (Kris Johnson)
101 ARTISTS TO LISTEN TO BEFORE YOU DIE HC $22.99 (Nobrow Press) – Join Ricardo Cavolo for a musical journey of discovery. From Bach to Radiohead to Dolly Parton, see what it’s like to unearth these artists again for the first time. (Andrew)
INFINITE LOOP TP $19.99 (IDW) – In a far-flung future where time-travel is a way of life, a woman named Teddy is tasked with monitoring the timestream for paradoxes. It’s during the course of these duties that she meets the girl of her dreams: A young woman named Ano. The only problem is, Ano is a paradox and must be “corrected”. Will Teddy choose love over the integrity of the space-time continuum? Or will she find a way to save her heart and her reality? Pick up this super-sweet collection containing the entire Infinite Loop mini-series and find out! (Kris Johnson)
MS MARVEL #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – When it comes to relaunching books from Marvel, the ones I’m looking forward to the most are the ones that are keeping their creative teams from the last series. I know that’s a bit weird and not very adventurous but if it ain’t broke, why revamp it? G. Willow Wilson shows us how Kamala’s life has gotten bigger, better and way more complicated. She’s a freakin’ Avenger now! But she’s still in school and there’s a lot to balance out. More power, more responsibility and all that jazz. (Andrew)
STAR WARS: VADER DOWN #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – Now here’s a book that’s been on my radar for quite some time. Jason Aaron has been doing some incredibly bad ass stuff in the main Star Wars title and this time out he’s bringing his skills to a new mini set in the same continuity. In the far reaches of space, Darth Vader unexpectedly encounters the entire Rebel Fleet. Inevitably overwhelmed, his TIE fighter is downed on an alien world and his connection to his Imperial Forces are cut off, the Dark Lord of the Sith must stand his ground against all of the heroes of the Rebel Alliance! The good guys may think they have the advantage but when the dust has settled they will all know the true power of the Dark Side. (Kris Johnson)
HUCK #1 $3.50 (Image) – The media ruins everything! Just take this guy Huck for example. He’s just a regular dude with extraordinary gifts, living in a seaside town just minding his own business. He helps out his neighbours and they keep his secret. But then somebody tells the media and everything gets turned upside down. This new title from Mark Millar and Rafael Albuquerque is bound to be a rip-roaring adventure. It’s worth a look if you ask me…..and if you’re reading this, that’s like you’re asking me, isn’t it? (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
