Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
SHERIFF OF BABYLON #1 $3.99 (Vertigo) – It’s 2003 and Chris Henry has been tasked with training the new Iraqi police force in the heart of Baghdad. When one of his charges ends up dead, Chris needs to navigate the Iraqi underworld and hope that Nassir, his one ally and Baghdad’s last cop standing, can help him bring law to a country in turmoil. The book sure has a unique hook but what’ll be bringing me to the table is legit CIA pedigree of the book’s co-writer Tom King. I imagine the reality and grit will be cranked up to 11. Oh, glory be. (Kris Johnson)
DAREDEVIL #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – If you know me, you KNOW Daredevil was making the list this week. Matt Murdock returns to New York with his identity secret once again! How’s that work? All will be explained in this new series that finds DD as a prosecuting attorney back where he’s suppose to be. Oh, and he’s got a new sidekick….no, it’s not Gambit. We’ve gone over this….that’s not Gambit on the cover. Check out my video interview with writer Charles Soule for more on what’s happening in Daredevil’s world. (Andrew)
RED WOLF #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Marvel revamps Red Wolf for a new age with this new series. The western hero, fresh from his introduction in Secret Wars 1872, begins a legendary journey that will somehow stretch from the Old West to the Modern Marvel U. How it’ll make sense is anybody’s guess, but HOT DAMN, it’s got a great cover! (Kris Johnson)
MYSTERY GIRL #1 $3.99 (Dark Horse) – You’ve heard of the girl who knows everything? Trine Hampstead actually does. She knows where you misplaced your phone. She knows who murdered the guy down the street. She knows where Jimmy Hoffa’s body is. She knows it all….that is except for how she knows what she knows or what the hell happened to her for the last ten years. But other than that, she knows everything, man, and what she knows might end up getting her in trouble. (Andrew)
TOTALLY AWESOME HULK #1 $4.99 (Marvel) – One of my absolutely favourite underrated Marvel characters, Amadeus Cho (aka Mastermind Excello! aka The Seventh Smartest Dude in the Marvel U!) takes centre stage in this brand new book from the House of Ideas… and this time he’s The Hulk! Hu-waaaaaaah?! (Kris Johnson)
GARFIELD’S CHEESY HOLIDAY #1 $4.99 (Boom) – It’s the holiday season! Yeahhhhhh! We’re ready to celebrate and so is Garfield. He’s just gotta stop this Lasagna Monster that’s stealing all the world’s lasagna on Christmas Day. Once he takes care of that guy, he’ll have an awesome lasagna filled holiday. Priorities. (Andrew)
JIM HENSON’S STORYTELLER: DRAGONS #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Every culture from every corner of this big blue marble share stories of the same mythical beasts: Dragons! And this month, via the awesome platform of Jim Henson’s Storyteller character, a fresh series begins exploring the many variations that exist in global folklore. First out of the box is a story called ‘Son of the Serpent’ examining Native tales of the Horned Snake and the Thunderbird. I’m all in, babaaaaay! (Kris Johnson)
BIG MAN PLANS TP $14.99 (Image) – You wanna read something fucked up? You wanna read a tale of brutal revenge that makes you cringe at the violence and root for the guy doling it out even harder all at the same time? You wanna see Eric Powell’s non-Goon work? If you want all of these things, then you NEED to read Big Man Plans, now collected in this here handy, dandy trade. (Andrew)
DOCTOR STRANGE #3 $3.99 (Marvel) – Can’t get enough of that Strange… DOCTOR Strange, that is! Get your head outta the gutter! This book has been a complete blast since day one and it looks like the the surprisingly effective combination of goofy fun and high stakes is set to continue with the latest ish. This month, the Doc awakes nearly naked and in a “strange” place … hur hur… with no clue as to how he got there or why there are a bunch of crazy monsters chasing him. With no tools, weapons, or spellbooks, Stevie is gonna have to pull out all the stops to make it back to the Sanctum Sanctorum alive! (Kris Johnson)
HARLEY’S LITTLE BLACK BOOK #1 $4.99 (DC Comics) – Here’s another book for the most popular DC Character out there. Know how I know Harley’s the most popular right now? ‘Cause this is a new, bi-monthly team-up book. They don’t give that kind of title to just anybody. They give it to a cat that’s got the eyes of a multitude of adoring fans so they can showcase the rest of their damn universe. Add in that it’s written by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti and the good times keep rolling. This first issue sees Harley team up with Wonder Woman. Is this just a clever cover or do they actually switch outfits? Inquiring minds (and pervy fans) want to know. Better go buy the book and find out. (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
