Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
BATMAN TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 $3.99 (DC/IDW) – It’s a double dose of the Bat this week, and while some people would say that’s two doses too many *cough*Andrew*cough*, I would not be one of them! I mean, seriously, who can resist the first ever team up between the Dark Knight Detective and the Heroes in a Halfshell? People that’re allergic to fun, I guess. Well, they can keep their weird affliction and we’ll enjoy our sweet-ass Batman-infused Ninja Turtle comics, dammit! (Kris Johnson)
THE VIOLENT #1 $2.99 (Image) – You can have you’re foolish bat/turtle crossovers. Me, I’m more interested in gritty crime books. And look, we got one just starting up this week. Mason’s an ex-con and former drug addict who’s just trying to get his life back on track so he can provide for his wife and daughter. But when the threat of losing said daughter arises, Mason falls back on old habits which leads back to a series of crimes with some deathly serious repercussions. Be sure to catch our show this week where we’ll be talking the creative team behind this one: Ed Brisson and Adam Gorham! (Andrew)
SECRET WARS #8 $3.99 (Marvel) – A newly giant-ass Ben Grimm versus a historically giant-ass Galactus duke it out on the front steps of Doomstadt! Doom’s Barons turn on their master and the Thors are no longer taking any shit from the metal-masked “god”! The final days of Battleworld are here… and when it’s all said and done, there may not be anything left. (Kris Johnson)
SNOW GN $12.00 (Benjamin Rivers) – I remember when I first read Snow, an indie comic about life as a twenty-something in Toronto set against the back drop of a neighbourhood in the mid-flux of gentrification. It was charming and endearing with the right level of pathos and the art was extremely engaging. That was a few years back. Now the book has been adapted into a feature film and there’s a brand new edition of the book complete with extras and a brand new cover. If you’re looking for a cool “slice-of-life” comic, this one’s for you. (Andrew)
JACK THE RIPPER HC $17.99 (Dark Horse) – It’s a few months removed from the Whitechapel killings when a suspiciously similar set of murders begin taking place on the streets of Paris. While others are horrified at the prospect of history repeating itself, Inspector Frederick Abberline sees the new deaths as a chance at redemption. Has Jack The Ripper truly returned? And, if so, can Abberline prevent the monster from slipping through his fingers a second time? (Kris Johnson)
SNOW BLIND #1 $3.99 (Boom) – Don’t you hate when you find out your family’s in the witness protection program and they never told you? That’s what Teddy, a high schooler in a sleepy Alaskan suburb, finds out when he innocently posts a photo of his dad on Facebook. Now the town isn’t so sleepy anymore, what with a man with a score to settle on the loose and the FBI invading the town. But the big kicker’s that Teddy’s dad might not be the easy going guy he claims to be. He might just be a pretty bad dude. Proof once again that Facebook ruins lives. (Andrew)
SCARLET WITCH #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – Witchcraft is broken and the only one that can fix it is Wanda Maximoff! …Or whatever the hell it is she calls herself these days after finding out Magneto isn’t her father and that she was genetically engineered by the High Evolutionary… or something. Anywho, today is a new day for Scarlet Witch, and it’s up to her to figure out who messed up magic and what she can do to put the pieces back together. And, hey, David Aja covers! Beautiful! (Kris Johnson)
BROOKLYN ANIMAL CONTROL $7.99 (IDW) – This ain’t your daddy’s Animal Control. This team of hardened vets (get it?) are on the streets keeping you safe from werewolves…..werewolves that also run the mob during the day in their human alter egos. Things are twice as scary when the big bad wolf is also the big bad in the criminal underworld. The Brooklyn Animal Control have got their work cut out for ’em. (Andrew)
BATMAN #47 $3.99 (DC Comics) – Bat-Gordon versus. Mr. Bloom! Bruce Wayne versus his past! Every issue of this series from the team of Capullo and Snyder has been rock solid and this latest arc is no different. Rumours swirl that this storyline could be the end of the blockbuster duo so don’t miss out while there’s still fresh awesome to be had. (Kris Johnson)
ALABASTER SHADOWS GN $12.99 (Oni) – Hey kids! Remember all those cool movies us fogies grew up with, like The Goonies and The Monster Squad? Wouldn’t it be cool if there was an all-ages graphic novel that had that kind of feel? Well guess what? Alabaster Shadows is what you’re looking for. Carter and his family have just moved into town and he can’t help but notice that things are amiss. Most of the adults don’t really like children and there’s a few things weird about his house. Turns out there’s monsters afoot and it’s up to Carter and his new friends to stop them. Sound’s like a rockin’ good read, don’t it? (Andrew)
So there you go. Check these books out and let us know what you think. We’ll be back again next week with more choice cuts of comic goodness!
If you’re gonna geek out, GEEK HARD!
