Welcome to another edition of New Comics, where we give our suggestions on what books to pick up when perusing the comic shelves week to week. As always, I am joined by Kris Johnson of Bizarre Comics Entertainment. Read on to find the best of what the comic shop has in store for you this week.
Here we go.
BILL & TED GO TO HELL #1 (of 4) $3.99 (Boom) – Bill and Ted must once again make a Bogus Journey into the Underworld, but this time their souls are intact and they’re on a rescue mission! Just who needs saving from the belly of the Beast? Why their old pal Death, of course! Wai-buh-waaah? Yeah, the Sadler-flavoured Reaper has run afoul of the Devil himself and only Bill, Ted, and histories greatest figures have a hope of pulling their boy from the jaws of damnation! Most HEINOUS! (Kris Johnson)
POWER MAN AND IRON FIST #1 $3.99 (Marvel) – This is the day I’ve been waiting YEARS for. The band is back together again, and when I say band, I mean the classic Heroes for Hire Duo that were made for each other. I know some of you are probably expecting me to break out into a chorus of “Reunited” but I’ve decided to contain myself…….but it does /Feel So Good/….okay, that’s it. That’s all you’re gonna get from me. Anyways, the original bromance is back on the streets to bust some heads and kick some ass! Be there with ’em. (Andrew)
BATMAN NOIR THE BLACK MIRROR HC $34.99 (DC Comics) – One of the best Batman stories of the past 10 years gets the noir treatment in this swanky, new hardcover! Collecting the tale originally published in DETECTIVE COMICS, this new edition presents Jock’s phenomenal artwork in their original black and white inks. Geoff Johns’ script finds Dick Grayson donning the cowl and coming face to face with the grim reality of what it truly means to become Batman inside and out when a series of gruesome murders rock Gotham. Spoiler alert, the killer does not turn out to be Crazy Quilt, much to my disappointment. (Kris Johnson)
12 REASONS WHY I LOVE HER 10TH ANNV ED HC $19.99 (Oni) – I remember when this graphic novel first came out. Can’t believe that’s it been 10 years. With a simple story told through 12 vignettes focusing on the up and down relationship of a young couple, Jamie S Rich and Joëlle Jones brought us a very touching, very realistic tale. And now it’s available in a larger sized hardcover format with excerpts from the original script included. Great for a longtime fan who would like something special. Also great for somebody who’s never read it and wants something different from the big guns, big pecs, big tits world of mainstream comics. (Andrew)
MIGHTY THOR #4 $3.99 (Marvel) – A beautifully illustrated book with a tremendously complex central character, The Mighty Thor continues Jason Aaron’s phenomenal and lengthy run with the character in style. War is brewing on Asgard. Odin has seemingly lost it once and for all with his ordering of the jailing of Frigga and the hunt for Thor, all while Malekith cuts a bloody swath through the Ten Realms with the aid of a Who’s Who of Norse baddies. Meanwhile, Loki Loki-s it up and Thor tries to keep herself from dying in more than just the ways you’d assume *cough*cancer*cough*. It’s the feel good comic of the year! (Kris Johnson)
THE FADE OUT TP VOL 03 $12.99 (Image) – The final trade of The Fade Out, which puts the remaining puzzle pieces of this classic Hollywood mystery in place, is now available this Wednesday. So all you folks that waited for the collected edition can now catch up to the rest of us diehard Brubaker/Phillips fans and revel in the epic conclusion. Welcome to the party, pal! Enjoy. (Andrew)
HUCK #4 $3.50 (Image) – This book may just be the best thing Mark Millar has ever written. The legendary Rafael Albuqurque is on art. You really should be reading this book about a kind-hearted, simple, small-town man who just happens to have superpowers. So go on! Git it! (Kris Johnson)
ASTRO CITY #32 $3.99 (Vertigo) – One of the most revered Astro City story arcs would have to be The Tarnished Angel. Some have heralded it as the Greatest Astro City Story of ALL TIME! I personally think it’s the Confession story arc, but that’s neither here nor there. Steeljack, the protagonist of The Tarnished Angel story, returns to the pages of Astro City this week in part 1 of a 3 issue tale where he’ll be hired by a femme fatale and end up getting into deep trouble. Let’s see where the action take us, shall we? (Andrew)
CAPTAIN AMERICA WHITE HC $29.99 (Marvel) – You no longer have to wonder when Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale will finally get around to finishing this series, because, hey, lookie here! It’s all done! And collected! In one book! Time to crack open the old pocket book and enjoy some pure, unfiltered Cap and Bucky WWII adventures from one of the most peerless duos in comicdom. It’s about time. (Kris Johnson)
SNOWFALL #1 $3.99 (Image) – In the year 2045, the planet is fucked……I know we already know it will be fucked but that’s the set up for the new book, Snowfall. In this future, climate change has gotten so bad that it doesn’t snow anymore. The States have changed and are now run by a big corporation (who didn’t see that coming?). There’s one man who’s stickin’ it to the system: The White Wizard. This dude wields weather as a weapon….ya know, like Storm or Weather Wizard. But is the White Wizard a villain or a savior? Is he the hero the Cooperative States of America need, or is he the one they deserve? Time will tell as the snow drifts in. (Andrew)
